  • This video is really for people who lived in the UK during a small window of time. The quote below is from Wikipedia: "Pirate radio" in the UK first became widespread in the early 1960s when pop music stations such as Radio Caroline and Radio London started to broadcast on medium wave to the UK from offshore ships or disused sea forts. At the time these stations were not illegal because they were broadcasting from international waters. The stations were set up by entrepreneurs and music enthusiasts to meet the growing demand for pop and rock music, which was not catered for by the legal BBC Radio services
Mike Raven was heavily involved with pirate radio and in this unique interview, recorded on 11 March 1970, he explains all. The interviewer is Andy Finney.

This is quite a gem. I hadn't seen an interview before with the late great Mike Raven. I remember Andy Finney on Radio Stoke, Radio London and Radio 1. A great broadcaster

Fred Fairman That's fascinating. Do tell us any more you can about him. It's SO long ago that we shot that interview.

This is amazing. I’ve accidentally fallen down the rabbit hole. I stayed on Mike and Mandy’s farm on Bodmin moor during the 80’s. I never knew what an amazing man Mike was!

Thanks for uploading this. Only really discovered and heard about Mike Raven in recent years, what a multi talented person he was!
All before my time, but as there are so few recordings of his work on the Internet, this interview is a great find.
Listening back to some of his shows has introduced me to some artists, I hope he would be glad to hear he is still bringing his love of music to others all these years later.
    Thanks again for sharing! :)

Fantastically detailed BTS accounts from a deep, intelligent and dedicated man. I guess from his appearance a Druid? Most Druids I've come across are good, thoughtful and reasonable people

Wow I think this might be the only filmed interview with Mike Raven. I used to listen to his RnB show which followed John Peels Top Gear religiously on sunday evenings on Radio 1 in the late 60s on a transistor radio at my boarding school (Bearwood College) through headphones in the dorm (in case anyone is interested). Blues in the first half and Soul in the second. I think the voice over at the beginning of the film was Kenny Everett - trying a bit too hard to be funny and not really succeeding in my opinion. Thanks for sharing this wonderful gem of a film with us.

Mike Raven was a genuine icon.
It was a mistake by Hammer to revoice him in Lust for a Vampire.
Why would you change that perfect voice ? Total madness.

The voice-over at the beginning was Andy Wright, not Kenny Everett. Andy was a colleague at Radio Stoke and later went on to Radio Oxford then one of the midlands ones. Died far too early. The clip is from a demo tape of his, not any broadcast programme. He lived, IIRC, in Felixstowe and could get fantastic reception of the pirates ... hence the extracts in the clip. I grabbed it, with his permission, to kick off the interview. [Also ... blushing at radiorowley's comment below: very kind.]

It's interesting to hear Mike Raven (this is my R&B show) talking about how the Carolines were towed away.
My memory of the last moments of Caroline North (199) is that it was planned before the day and I can clearly remember standing in our front room as the station played its last tune and the announcer said goodby.
I wonder if Mike's recollections refered to Caroline South.
Can anyone else remember listening to 199 closing down. I can still remember the empty silence on my radio.

I found this video very interesting as I lived through that era. Apart from Radio Caroline and Radio London, I remember hearing Radio City - Atlanta - King - 390 etc, Great times. And we still have Radio Caroline on line and the Caroline ship Ross Revenge has been restored to it"s former glory. Ready for broadcasting again??? I hope so !!!

The interview is fascinatng, although one really has to wonder if Mike Raven wasn't bigging up his own importance in the grand scheme of things just a little bit!
