Secrets of the conch shell and its toughness

  • The shells of marine organisms take a beating from impacts due to storms and tides, rocky shores, and sharp-toothed predators. But as recent research has demonstrated, one type of shell stands out above all the others in its toughness: the conch. Now, researchers at MIT have shown that the conch shell’s superior strength can be reproduced in engineered materials. (Learn more: news.mit.edu/2017/conch-shells...)

    The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an independent, coeducational, privately endowed university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our mission is to advance knowledge; to educate students in science, engineering, and technology; and to tackle the most pressing problems facing the world today. We are a community of hands-on problem-solvers in love with fundamental science and eager to make the world a better place.
    The MIT UA-cam channel features videos about all types of MIT research, including the robot cheetah, LIGO, gravitational waves, mathematics, and bombardier beetles, as well as videos on origami, time capsules, and other aspects of life and culture on the MIT campus. Our goal is to open the doors of MIT and bring the Institute to the world through video.

    That's really cool, but I don't know if it would make optimal materials for helmets. The secret to a helmet is to fold and crunch in a way to dissipate the enourmous quantities of kinetic energy from the bullet. Something like this would not deformate, and all the energy would be transfered to the persons skull. The bullet may not penetrate, but the energy would be more than enough to kill the wearer, wouldn't it? Otherwise is great to see technology beeing discovered and created in real time. I wish I could study at MIT, it seems that all the newest technology in robotics and other areas is beeing created there!

      It does appear to dissipate energy, just not with cracking.

      Then how? The energy needs to convert to something, just sound+heat isn`t enough

      Would make great body armor though, maybe lever 2 to 3 body armor.

      Filipe Prates wouldn't the shell kill the organism on impact already if the same logic applied in nature?

    Varying grain direction per layer is what makes plywood so good, a 19th century invention. Why are we just discovering this for 3D printing?

    Seems MIT never made a quilt or great french pastry.Think of cracks like air temp or trying to stay warm with the least bulk. Samething as the shell. Twists, turns and folds.

    The problem is not penetration, it's the force of impact. Something has to absorb all that kinetic energy and it's usually our body.

    I wonder if this structure could reduce the brittle properties of carbon fiber...

    • @johntheux9238
      @johntheux9238 7 років тому +2

      Not much carbon fiber already deflects the cracks that pass through it since it is a fiber but this technique would create pieces with the same properties of resistance to cracks that the fibers while remaining isotropic
