  • Robert Shaw's 'The Ma Grinder' just may be Texas Barrelhouse at its best. Shaw, and his fellow west Texas pianists, are known as the "Santa Fe Group" because they would hop the Santa Fe Train to get from gig to gig. And by gig, I mean barrelhouse, lumber camp, mill towns, etc.

Many thanks to Ethan for bringing us such an impeccable rendering of this iconic number, once the calling-card piece of the Santa Fe group and now sadly forgotten by most of humanity. This eclectic number surely defies classification by genre. I think you will find that Shaw made a famous recording of this piece, but he wasn't its composer.

Thanks for the comment. It is such a dynamic number! Though Shaw was not the originator, he certainly added his own ideas and can be credited as one of the developers of this tune.

I see you're even using Shaw's left hand chop method for the appropriate passages. Nice work!

This piece was composed by a number of players, each contributing their own sections, and one of the composers was a pianist known as Peg Leg Will, who had injured his left hand while jumping off a freight train and had had to develop this method of playing to compensate, and so the parts composed by this individual are supposed to be played in his style. Kudos to Ethan for doing so.
