I think it also boils down to what your goals are.
If you're just trying to sit down and have a good time, then I can understand someone not wanting to subject themselves to the toxicity or stress of climbing ranked.
But I find that if you really, truly want to get good at something, generally, no amount of toxicity or frustration is going to stop you from pursuing that. If it does, it might just mean that you don't really want it as badly as you think you do.

I played 10 ladder games with orc (only spamming grunts + tauren hero). Atmosphere was terrible. First guy kept spamming how stupid I was for playing this build, so in the next match I wrote "hey, this is my second game, so my build is probably bad" and the guy was really friendly and nice until I destroyed his expansion , then he started spamming and rage quited. After playing 10 games, I was very exhausted and tired. I had 80% winrate and no motivation to continue playing.

It's like i play stupid opening in chess just to get people out of prep as soon as possible but even in chess sometimes people start saying some bad sentences lol. They think they're winning but they've got no skill or time to do that properly and i just win the game. But yeah, they were winning according to stockfish) surely! but that -1.2 when material is equal - doesn't mean anything. You need to figure it out - but i already did, i knew that im kinda of screwed with perfect play. But i have fun playing these non meta chess games where yeah, i'll lose if opp is GM making all best moves, but it will be a completely new game to me which is fun. And i've got some ideas how to defend well and create an attack in these weird positions that others won't have if they didn't play against that specific "bad" start.
So yeah, valid opinion that TC first is bad. But it's fun, i suppose, so why not? and, and if opponents cant do anything about it - why not just have fun with TC first AND having a win at the same time? :D that's just awesome. I wouldn't care about chatters in this case at all) but yeah, he's right, the build is bad and Grubby or any other good player would probably win with ease

Been playing warcraft 3 for fourteen years and brood war for twenty years, have been flamed on battlenet for nearly everything. While I have grown thick skin, and I personally have fun spamming epithets back at them, I don't know how stupid blizzard has to be to not insert a more convenient quality of life method of squelching during the production of Reforged, for less hardcore players who don't want to deal with racial verbal abuse and being told to commit suicide. Squelch command takes way too long for most people to type in game, and just gives your opponent an advantage if you try to type their ridiculously symbol heavy smurf account names with multiple lower and upper case O's and zeroes. Sometimes the only solution is to just be more heinous and toxic than your opponent. Some people paid a lot of money and just want a relaxing game after a stressful day at work. It also makes it difficult for me to recommend starcraft and warcraft to my friends and family because I don't want them to experience these environments.

Thanks Grubby I really needed to hear this. I have been playing competitive games since I was 14 years old. Reached really high ranking on World of Warcraft at the age of 15 and have reached 0.049% of the ladder in league of legends at my peak. While consistently hovering around 2-3% playing semi casually. I've got a mental block since I reached 20 years old which makes me afraid to play competitive games. I am 29 now and I'm afraid of what people think of me in ranked matches. I don't want to disappoint people and it's taken a toll on my mind. When opponents insult me it has an impact and when my chats are turned off I still feel like I disappoint people and I perform worse. What you just said makes me think of it in a different way and hopefully one day I'll get rid of the mental block.

    Greetings Grubby and his fans!
The ladder reflects our real world.
What we find there, we also find in the boxing ring.
What kind of fair play do we currently find in our world?
Men act like women and take part in their class battles at the Olympics.
That is no longer world class, that is cheating at the highest level.
And we also find that in the ladder.
They cheat, they insult, they do everything (as well as Grubby) to win.
What we would all like to see in the Warcraft 3 ladder is fair play.
Honourable players who are concerned about improving themselves
and helping others to improve, and do not use all tricks and means
to try to win in a child's game.

playing the game as good as i could, ran out of resources, opponent about to destroy what's left of my base with no realistic comebackoption, i call gg and surrendered.
rest of the team lost afterwards and i get called out for ruining the match for the team cause i quit ..

to me it seems like what grubby said about this scenario to be a self-projection more than anything. (if we ignore that it was a joke) that person could've been upset because of the reason mentioned at 2:35
I'm really happy this thing got covered, I personally don't like how most people deflect this topic of motivation, frustration and what it means to deal with this. but it's also a subject that is very prone to backfiring so I partly understand why it is like this
I think what helps a lot is listening to the person more and understanding what is it like to them, as oppose to coming up with a hypothesis for it. that being said, that's just impossible on a livestream since you don't have that low latency and easy communication. imo understanding a person tends to help a lot more than just telling them what you think they need to be doing different

This is really funny but this has given me a big insight into myself and on why I hate competitive online games. I used to love playing with friends local multiplayer, never had the same pleasure with online.
