I tried a £250 Cider Making Machine
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- In one of my most expensive videos ever .... for a variety of reasons as you'll see in the video... I put a homemade cider making machine to the test! This machine can turn fruits and other things into cider, plus make wine, mead and much more! It was intense, but I learnt a lot from it and hope you do too. It has inspired me to try and make it without the machine now, so look out for a follow up video!

This was super fun and tasted even better a few days later! It's really inspired me to make my own homemade cider without a machine now, so look out for that soon! If you liked this, you'll probably like the individual kitchen gadget testing playlist here with loads more kitchen gadget reviews ua-cam.com/video/olFYfhtScR4/v-deo.html
wait 50yrs and send a bottle of your cider to Stuart Ashens to try.
Should of gone to Wilkos for the yeast, it's 1.50 for a tub of it
So you spent £250 on a cider making machine, £35 on a heat mat and £20 on international shipping for Dutch yeast and...you've been inspired to make cider without the machine!? 🤔 😂 Stick with the old White Lightning Barry; a damn site cheaper, no need for an IT degree or stable WiFi and it doesn't take a week to make! 😂
So really Barry 5 days later and over £300 spent all to make about a pint maybe a pint and 1/2 of cider when it’s quite cheap to buy at the supermarket anyway...
Was it really worth the time and money? Seeing you have given it away..
Looks like chedder Valley cider
"You two aren't a good example, drinking alcohol in front of your 9 year old daughter" She always has me rolling! 🤣🤣🤣
"You're still drinking it! You're going to be drunk then!" "It's okay! homeschooling is going to be fun today!"
@@majorkurn I almost spit my food out when he said that! 🤣🤣
😂😂😂
Turn her around so it won't be in front of her. Boom! solved xD
She sure has serious opinions about drinking alcohol. Not the first time she said anything about it.
"Home schooling is gonna be fun today" Every parent in 2021
I've been homeschooling for 4 years now. So happy I've chosen to do so. When covid hit our lives didn't change much;-)
And it's over thank goodness 😊
Except for parents in Australia, I think all the Sates and Territories are back to school here as we have very low amount of cases and none in my state.
I have been teaching virtually this past school year and every year the kids/parents get an end-of-school-year gift for their teachers. It warms my heart when my students surprise me with a card, a drawing, a candle or a yummy treat at the end of the school year but this year, teaching virtually during a pandemic...the most popular end-of-school-year teacher gifts I have seen being given to teachers from parents/guardians was LCBO gift cards or bottles of wine! LOL
22:25 The "Oh no" in the background as the parents descend into alcoholism :P
Surely being a Bristolian, Barry has the legally required slightly grubby plastic jugs full of Scrumpy already.
lol!
I remember my mother loved cider when I was growing up. She had a very specific brand she was always on about. Always saying how much she craved Dickens cider.
Omg, I thought you were maybe serious especially since the brand exists but still thought it was an odd name. Took me a second to realize what it says all spelled out lol
As a homebrewer watching this, I've experienced a roller coaster of emotions. It's been charming watching your first journey into homebrew. Keep experimenting and learning!
Yeah, my main emotion was total disbelief that a seemingly intelligent man thought it necessary to pay big bucks for something you can do with a bucket.
@@heatherrowles2580 lol, yeah! Although having a gadget can add a certain amount of fun, I'm not sure I'd have it in me to shell out £250 to add a bit of monitoring. I twinged more at the idea of ordering yeast from so far away. I'm used to just popping down to my local homebrew supply shop.
for 250 quid i would have thought it would have had its own built in heating system like a bread maker
Yes! That was a bit disappointing to say the least
Hey barry, food technician here, the °Bx means "Degrees Brix" that represents, in this case how much sugar is in the volume of liquid you have. 21 Bx could mean 21g of sugar in 100 g of liquid
Homeschooling is going to be fun today 😂 earmark this video for when she’s 16 and see if she will say the same about not drinking 🍷
I would say I was never going to drink when I was little, and I meant it, I'm 28 now and have still never drunk, so you never know, she might be serious XD
I made cider during the 1st lockdown in 2L lemonade bottles with a 'bubble' air lock. (Had my hours cut in half - so plenty time on my hands) 1/2g of yeast for 2L, not the whole sachet!! One sachet of yeast would do 28 brews! Always great results with just the cheap apple juice cartons from the supermarket. Bottled with 1 teaspoon of sugar for carbonation.
Would love to see you brew mead! Sounds like the start of a ‘Barry Brews’ series to me...
Also cheers Bristol City - from a Norwich fan!!
Next with ashen “will it cider”
Barry your wife must be hungover when entering the home schooling class 😂 *Teacher be like* heloow kilds todey weeeeeee arer learninggg schoolllll
For that much dosh you'd think the cider machine would have it's own built in heater.
This was great, would love to see you try some more out.
Maybe a Will It Cider with Ashens?
Please do another one soon. Apple cider. The one with the balloon. Your kids are fantastic. This was a fun video. Thank you, Barry 😷😎
definately! i've wanted to make mead too lol. good luck patrons!
New video with Ashens “Will it Cider?” But take about a month. Just doing all recipes
Yes my dood, a barry brews series would be awesome!!
You just spent £250 on something you can do with a couple of lidded buckets?
OMG Barry, you go to ANY U-Brew store and that is THE STANDARD that is everywhere. It might have cost a pound.
Oh, and it gives you graphs without any scales or numbers. Wow. Just wow.
If you were wondering, bread yeast is the same yeast used in beer making, usually a Lager yeast.
When it comes to the yeast you can use any yeast even bread yeast but it does impart some unique characteristics. The reason for special yeast is that wine yeast, and yeast for brewing, survives at much higher alcohol levels and tastes better, as soon as it dies the fermentation will stop and bread yeast will die at just 6%. Any wine yeast especially those for sparkling wine will work for cider.
Barry: Grabs the greenest pineapple possible
Also Barry: I don’t think this is ripe.
Maybe you should’ve gotten canned pineapple
My parents did this with canned fruit 50 years ago in a gallon pickle jar on the kitchen counter with sugar and natural yeast from the environment. Took a few weeks though and like sourdough it had to be fed to keep the yeast alive. Just sugar and fruit.
at 14.10 I thought for a second you had an UFO in your kitchen! And chloë at end cracked me up! Bucket and a balloon? Please Barry, explain... I want to make that cider too, Mrs B sold it good!
That reminded me of my childhood 🤣. My dad used to make Rose hip wine and we had a couple of those large glass fermenters standing on a little cupboard in the kitchen.
WTF?? just buy some demijohns or even use old plastic bottles and you can make cider for under a tenner!
Was thinking that too. I can make one hell of a lot of cider for £250.
Barry you sound like every new homebrewer ever. Stressing about every little thing. Nice.
The sugar is food for the yeast. To make it less sweet, ferment it longer.
Chloe, I absolutely adore you!
I see that you don't actually use the gadgets you test in everyday cooking (strawberry thingy and pineapple cutter...)
i feel like thats the problem with most gadgets, theyre too much effort to take out, use and clean, while a knife is small, easy to clean and used for everything
Can't blame him, tbh. I'm not a fan of most of those gadgets (except for the jar key, that thing is a godsend).
Hate gadgets that just make everything more complex.
@@PirikkoP I hear ya, but he did get awfully excited when testing out that strawberry gadget... I find it even more amusing that he barely even uses the gadgets in his own Kitchen Prep Kit, like the garlic peeler or press...
This sounds very technical this machine!
Why i first made "turbo cider" i was supposed to use cheap apple juice because the whole point is it being fast and cheap, but i was determined for it to work so i bought the most expensive purest apple juice i could find, costing more than just buying nice cider, but i just wanted to make my first homebrew successful. It worked and blimey, it knocked my socks off coming out at 9%abv and was nice too.
Very fun video! I'd love to see you try more brewing! :D
Some fun facts:
- The amount of alcohol will keep going up if you let it keep fermenting to a point, but eventually there'll be so much alcohol and so little sugar that the yeast will die off and fermentation will stop anyways. Fermentation without distillation will never get you more than ~18% alcohol.
- While you *can* use bread yeast to make alcohol, it'll mess with the flavor, and it's better to use a wine or beer yeast instead. And the specific brand/origin of the yeast does affect the flavor!
- Brewing is pretty easy to make even without specialized equipment, though obviously the results won't be as precise. The Modern Rogue channel has an episode about making mead where they just make it in big water jugs with balloons over the tops that they leave in a garage for a few days! (Mead is very good btw, and becoming more popular again!)
Really looking forward to seeing you try more cider/wine/mead/beer making!
I hate to say it, you've basically bought a £250 smart bucket. Talk to your local homebrew shop (because you have a local homebrew shop, you just haven't found it yet) and they'll get you set up with all the kit you need for some really big, really nice batches and they'll have a blast introducing you to the art in depth :3 I've made like 5 or 6 batches of stuff and have stacks of glass bottles and I think I've spent about as much as you did on just that brewing jug.
All bakers seem to think there's only one type of yeast but brewers and vintners know that strain of yeast is super important to the flavour of the final product. You probably could have used a different yeast that could have been found in the UK but it would have had to have been a wine yeast.
I see purely app controlled systems as being a future paperweight when the app closes and the company busts.
You can use cooking yeast, BUT it is best to try & source proper home brewing yeasts.
Google for local home brew shops, you will be amazed at the different yeasts which are available and just how they really do make a difference in the flavours.
Brewing yeast is very different from bread yeast. Brewing yeast is bred to tolerate alchohol, so that higher concentrations of alcohol can be acheived - it would kill bread yeast quite quickly. Bread yeast is optimised for taste and CO2 production (which makes the bread rise). Some brewing yeasts are designed to be bottom fermenting (for wine) or top fermenting (for beer). So if you used bread yeast it would sort of work but wouldn't ferment all the sugar and might taste yeasty.
"yes always save password!"
barry that makes the technician in me crumble
Barry you should do reacting to old videos again for when you hit 1 mil subs
beer and wine is easy to get into and it is very enjoyable as hobby. i highly suggest you do videos of it. i would definitely watch it!
Quick tip on pineapples; if they’re still green, they’re not quite ripe. Turn them upside down onto their leaves for a few days until it is more golden than green.
8:46 🤣😂
Great as always it should be sponsored as you did a great job at showing of the machine!!
Best video I've seen in a while!
For my £250, I'll just buy 529 cans of Lidl cider and be done with it.
Would be amazing watching you making different drinks and trying them, can't wait to hopefully see more!
His daughter is the greatest 😂😂❤️
Didn’t realise you tested such expensive gadgets. Please consider testing a Ninja Foodie Max 9 in 1, heard a lot about it & would love to hear/see what you make of it.
I make, I call it wine, with apples picked in the wild and filtered water. Even though the apples are washed well, they still have a natural yeast that ferments. I cut up the apples, fill half a very large mason jar that's been sterilized, then fill it up with water. I leave 3-4 fingers off the top. And stick it in my cupboard for a month. Because I left so much room at the top I don't need to burp it often. Gets friends and I pretty drunk.
I would like if you also had a brewing series :D
I've got some bad news about Max Fill. He passed away last month. Now he's up in heaven with Auntie Spill.
I think you’ll have to buy me one for your birthday too. Now I’m invested. Going shopping. Ta. Cheers (literally) from Canader eh!
Hah, last summer I tried my hand at making home-made ginger beer. Used wild yeast (from the ginger root itself and the air). It came out surprisingly well, though I probably could have fermented longer than I did. Didn't get a hydrometer, so no way of knowing how boozy it was.
Maybe it is good idea to try to do it without the machine? I plan to try it on instapot because it has a sou vide function. As long as the tempurature is right, it should be the same.
Barry Lewis needs his own show on BBC2. R.I.P AUNTY SPILL😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂✌️
Hmmm. That looks really good! I wonder Barry, could you do anything with the fruit after?
Brilliant Barry and good and helpful and love to you and the whole family
Honestly if you are home brewing properly to get the same level of safety and info that this machine gives you it will be just as expensive. the main difference is going to be volume. If you home brew you'll likely be making multiple bottles worth of end product and not just a few glasses? maybe about 1L when this was done? Very cool product BTW! Not saying not to do it the lower tech way, I am just saying from experience you'll easily spend £300 or more on the gear you need if you really get into home brewing.
Mrs Barry steals this device
This machine is so cool
a tipsy Mrs B. awesome.
Please do a conventional version ^.^ For comparison and science!
Really want to see Barry buy a "Grainfather" and do a beer from scratch, maybe collaborate with some brewery? (Psssst I work for a brewery)
fast shame the recipe did not mention filtering the fruit out or letting the yeast clear but I guess it would work if you drink it fast before the fruit rots or something. I'd keep the heated mat tho. Never used one but I hear they are good for brewing.
Usually I use Champagne yeast for Cider, works well and is easily available.. Not too sure how Pineapple and Strawberries can be called cider - Cider by any definition is made from Apples or Pears. PS I just use a bucket. although I do have access to a Cider press.
This was a great video. Love things like this.
Great job Barry!!!
Those wine yeasts can handle higher alcohol content, than for instance yeast for bread
Check out Chilli Chump pear cider. Its super easy!
Mead is easy to make, and it's so versatile, you can add whatever you like to it, chili mead is my favorite
Please do some home brewing the old fashioned way lol. I can never forget the dandelion and burdock wine my dad used to make, I learnt to hold my alcohol from the age of 12. 😂😂
Loved the video. First time viewer. New subscriber! What is the name of that machine? I'd like to purchase one. I can't seem to find one online. I am a homemade vinegar making maniac. I have bottles fermenting everywhere. This would be so great to own! Didn't know they made such a thing. Thanks a bunch
An expensive but fun way to make cider and other alcoholic drinks!
21:10 I can't 😂😂😂😂😂
Yay Bristol!!!
Insane amount of yeast, you need 1/4 to 1/2 of one pack, it is meant to ferment about 5 gallon if I remember correctly
Would love to see you do mead Barry. It's lovely stuff when done properly
I brew wine so wouldn't mind seeing some recipes. My best brew so far was tea and raisin wine which cost just 30p per bottle to make.
30p?! That's amazing
@@mrbarrylewis Yep, tasted a bit like Sherry. If you buy the 1 week wine kits expect them to take at least a fortnight at 21 Celsius but keeping them around that temp. results in a better flavour. It's a bit of a rabbit hole and you save so much money, worst thing about it is all the sanitising you need to do. Dandelion and Daisy is going to be my next experiment.
I have the same heating pad, It is for my cat actually she loves it.
Mrs B’s face at 23:00!!😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Chloe: ur gonna get druuunnkkk! 😱
Barry: It’s alright Chloe, homeschooling’s gonna be fun today 😂😂😂😂😂😃😃😃😃😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Love love love your videos Barry, they’re so wholesome and cheery ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Ooh, so tempting apart from the price! Please do a home brew budget friendly version soon! Elderflower cider is my favourite 😁🍻
My dad use to make slow gin and wine I can remember when I was a kid he blew up the shed 😂😂
“Not an advert”, but at 2:43 a carefully placed toaster fire 🔥 mug lol 😂 (no complaints just found it funny !).
Barry take a look at THE PINTER homebrewing system.
I use a big glass bottle, and some beer yeast, and fruit i like, or is cheap, mix it and wrap it in a blanket and see what happens, cheap and fine !
Can you do the recipe the normal way, need to try this.
if your internet is that bad is it cause the connection from the house to the street or is it internal inside the house, cause then you can use google wifi for example to create a mesh entwork around your house for better wifi, gotta check if the internet is actually bad with a speedtest on a device that is directly via cable connected to the router, otherwise starlink isn't gonna help much :/
This is so overcomplicated 🤣 I make my own cider all the time, I use a glass jar.... It was £10, and my cider is fermenting in the time it took you to open that thing lolz I'd love you to do some homebrew Barry! New playlist to get a little barathon going! Love the channel
Peace
What a fun video! I'd constantly have a new batch cookin'! I know that 250 pounds is a lot of money but it's worth it to not have your birthday balloon burst spewing your homemade cider into every nook and cranny in your kitchen! I absolutely need one of those! And, I almost forgot, but you have raised quite the narc.👮♀️🚓
@barryLewis Mr bean NEVER sleeps
Great video as always
Any chance of a link where to get one in UK
what happens if the company goes bust and you cant register to get past the app? does the item go down along with the company
Barry, I ordered a kitchen gadget kit in mid January and I haven't received it yet?? Love y'all!!😋💕
message me via my website
Id love to c free style thermamix recipies from you love all your vids
"home schoolings gonna be fun today" 😂😂
Where did you buy this? Googling is failing to find me a UK site that has them!
I would love to see a whole fermented series
