The origin of Halloween: the celebration of the dark period

Halloween is a festival celebrated on the 31st of October that combines elements of Celtic Samhain, where the closing of the harvest season was commemorated, and the Eve of the Christian All Saints' Day, celebrated in honour of the dead who, having overcome purgatory, enjoy eternal life with God. In the country calendar, Samhain marked the first day of winter. It was a crucial time of the year, when a balance was made between the livestock and the food supplies. By the early 20th century, Halloween had become the most common way to celebrate the day, with games, seasonal meals and costumes, losing its mystical and religious nature from the 1920s and 1930s. In more recent decades, it has become very popular, and has spread to many countries around the world.
