  • The Boi Valley is a group of valleys and mountain ranges located in the north-eastern part of the Catalan region of Alta Ribagorza. From the end of the 11th to the 12th century it experienced an artistic splendour that has led it to become a tourist centre of great importance today and a reference point for Romanesque art on an international level, having been declared a World Heritage Site. The symbolism used by the ecclesiastical hierarchy in the mural decorations and devotional objects instilled fear in those who observed their figures by the light of the oil lamp and the candle during religious services. The Apocalypse was one of the most frequently represented texts. Its purpose was moralizing and a warning to the followers of the dangers of falling into dissolute life as opposed to the exemplary life of the saints to whose patronage belonged the small rural churches. In this documentary, we will see some of these churches, and we will detail some of their pictorial cycles and eschatological purpose.
