I did comedy for 14 years tryin to break into the NYC comedy scene. I even saw Burr work once or twice years ago during my journey. I worked a job too. However, I got burned out and it stopped being fun. Never was a regular in any of the clubs, never got paid as a comic. I was doing “urban rooms”. I reinvented myself and became a impersonator/tribute artist and made more moves in 5 months then i did in 5 years chasing comedy. Everyone’s path is different.

I respect Bill’s advice. I chased comedy for 14 years in NYC. Never made a dime. I got burned out, wasn’t havin fun with it. I reinvented myself as a tribute artist/impersonator and made more moves in 5 months than i did in 5 years chasing comedy. Everyone’s path is NOT the same. There’s NO age limit on comedy. Dangerfield came back to comedy at 48 after a 12 year lay off working a job and raisin a family. U can have the desire all u want, but if u don’t have the right people behind u, u won’t progress as fast.

Even for musicians this is some true fucking advice...."don't quit your job" is something I wish I heard from Bill awhile ago...cuz that's what i'm doing now and i'm loving it...working and playing in a band...just playing shows once a month makes going to work much easier and going to work and spending the cash on gear, lights, fog machine and other cool shit makes going to play shows much easier

FrostyStone Ltd This is exactly what I hope to do. Bill inspired me to take up drums and my goals aren't to be the next john bonham or ringo (certainly would be awesome), I just want to play live twice or 3 times a month and have fun with it.

Me too! Bukowski said "don't try", but I take that as some sort of challenge. If you then decide to try, then maybe you actually have something to say, but if you don't then good, we don't need that weakass bullshit in here, anyhow.

    • @rickb.1751
      @rickb.1751 5 років тому +5

@@cflores1889 Maybe he means that in "trying" one gives themselves an out. It's a mental trick we play on ourselves surely but if we "do" instead of "trying" we are not getting wrapped up in the idea of doing stand-up we're focused in the process. When I "try" something I tend to rush more and be more half ass to get to my goal. When I "do" it's like taking a shower or running errands, it's a task in which I'm focused on the process more than the goal. The goal is to get better. I don't get better by trying, I get better by doing.
I love comedy and wondered what it would be like to do a set. I figure if I get up there and "do" it instead of "try", even if I end up not liking it I'll know I gave it everything I had.

Good luck man, I started 4 months ago and have done 36 gigs. It's hard, but don't let your first gig define you, whether it goes well or it's awful. Even really good open mic comedians are noticeably poor compared to anyone with a few years experience. It's the technique that takes years, everyone can be funny right away. Keep getting up on stage, and you'll get momentum.

Also, I’d suggest listening to the UA-cam video entitled, “Ari Shaffir shares advice to young comics at the Comedy Store”. It has been helpful to me and I’m not even a comic, I’m a musician. But it’s just 3 hours and 48 minutes of really great advice. Hope it helps.

Decided I wanted to start doing open mic nights just yesterday. I just started writing my first pages today. I'm 31, but unlike the Engineer that this is directed at, I'm in college right now. So I don't even have to worry about about giving up all the money that I don't have. I think more than anything I'm just looking forward to getting up there and bombing with dignity, but if I can get some laughs that would be cool too. Bill gives some pretty reasonable advice. Shit or get off the pot.

At least a 100 times in my life people asked me if I was a professional comedian or if I did standup. I can make a stranger laugh anytime I want especially if it's a cute girl. I've done an open mic once. I got laughs. I'm older though and I don't have a marketable face I don't think. If I went for it there's 0 chance I'd fail. I know what it takes. 100% I could turn pro in under 2 years. But. I think there's a world of difference between being great and being successful. I'm horrible at networking. I think the odds of becoming successful are ridiculously tiny. I live in Hollywood. I think it's all about being famous here, quality is almost irrelevant and looks are almost everything. So no standup for me but love Bill and the advice was great.

Boileau Gabriel it’s not. If you wanna be a comedian be funny. Nobody gives a shit how you look. They just wanna laugh. I’ve never heard anyone say “he’s my favourite comedian because he’s so good looking.” Most of the big comedians are old and not classically beautiful like Bill Burr, CK, Russell Peters, Dave Chapelle. Looks only matter if you wanna use comedy to get into movies.

Becoming famous or becoming a comedian is like selling your soul. When celebrities say that, it doesn't mean they've actually gone to hell and given Satan a sheet saying "My Soul" on it, but that's the equivalent to becoming famous. You can't retire from fame, even when you retire from whatever you do as a celebrity, people will still notice you. As Bill would say "it's fucking BRUTAL"

I'm chewing on the idea to transitioning to Standup Comedy from Music. I have ran into so many brick walls with collaborating with others that I can't begin to explain all of it. Heck, I could actually make a standup bit about how ridiculous it has been. I'm not nearly as motivated to be a solo musician for whatever reason. It's always been about having a Band, and having a Band just didn't work out for me after trying for 20 years. People are too busy with other things. I do have a lot on my mind, though. I'm very observational, sarcastic, can be witty and an asshole not afraid to drop truth bombs and point out paradoxes. I'm known for having a sharp tongue. So I'm really considering Standup Comedy. We will see...

It’s misguided for him to think becoming a writer or comedian is the change he needs.
Those things are great and he should do them, but the core issue is the lies of society we adhere to.
I’m not talking about conspiracy theories. I’m talking about the belief that a slave job and six figures, house, blah blah blah, are all necessities of life.
I gave them up a few years ago and my only regret is not doing it sooner.
Out of that I found my direction.

I was making way more money than I am at the moment, and now I have to find any way to keep up with payments for shit, that I could afford comfortably before. It sucks and I wish I would've took my own advice about a year ago. But fuck it man we gotta bounce back in this fucking world. Cheers bro! Pray I get back on my feet and never commit the same mistakes again.

I'm 46 (fuck!) and just started doing stand up last month after decades of going nowhere as a musician. (I kept my six figure job though LOL.) I'm hitting 5-10+ open mics a week and it's exhausting as hell! But I am getting consistent laughs, I'm getting better and developing my style/voice, I'm writing every day, and networking with a welcoming and supportive comedy community. I don't have a serious end goal, all I know is that I'm a comic and I'm fucking doing it! So if any of you are on the fence, just do it!

Am I the only one who thinks this guy writes like an engineer as well, real clunky? Based on his letter, it seems to me, he is delusional about being a writer. Who knows if he could make the grade as a comedian, but the fact he hasn't taken the first step and done open mike yet - as it would appear - is not a good sign. If someone wants to do something really, they try it; if they just want to reassure themselves that they have other options, they tell themselves that they could be a comedian or something or other, but without ever trying it.
