In Australia all beaches are public property. Its not legal or possible to privatize them. No matter what house/resort sits next to it, nor can you put up beach chairs and charge for them/the space.
Same in Norway.
As it should be. I would've thought Maritime Law would deal with this issue 🤔
But we still have the rich trying their hardest to "own" the beach, thankfully they haven't won yet!
Yeah but corporations win in those countries

This has been a problem in Jamaica too. I watched a program on tv back when I was still in school that showed there was only 1 public beach on the whole of Jamaica and showed a child’s first time seeing the beach. It was truly heartbreaking
Damn, for someone who lives on an island to rarely see the beach is insane to think about. Much love to Puerto Rico, Jamaica and any other island nation or otherwise facing these problems. My wife's Puerto Rican and my kids are half so I want to take them to Puerto Rico one day and I hope to enjoy our stay without problems with gates and shit. They've already been to Jamaica and had a blast.
It’s a trend right now people claiming ownership of public spaces. The idea of preventing people to access the ocean is outrageous.
On my island, a bar was charging beach goers for access to the beach. When the government asked the bar to not charge the access fee, the bar refused.
When the bar applied for renewal of its liquor license....well lets just say that the beachgoers are not paying any more access fees 😂😂😂

Every citizen owns the island. That's how public property works
Here in California too there are some beaches that rich people feel they are entitled to simply because they built their home there, however they built it on public land/beach.

I live 10 mins north of Daytona and you’re right. The beach belongs to hotels, no where to park bc all parking lots belong to hotels/condos and
They’ll tow you. If you have a residential Fl plate you should be allowed to park in those places. We’re the ones paying the sky high property tax/insurance rates.
Fellow Floridian here, too. Hardly any public access points (not enough parking, areas extremely far apart, etc). I'm in northwest FL. You can't throw a stick without hitting condos and private property signs.
Lately the county commissioners have started putting a stop to blocked access.
You can’t stop public access to public beaches.
Just because you buy a beachside property, does not mean that little slit of beach is YOURS.
The same thing is happening to La Cueva del Indio in Arecibo, some private company set up a gate at the entrance and was charging people 40 dollars for entry. A resistance movement against the privatization of the beach tore down the fence and their leader got arrested. Never stop fighting for our public beaches!
Ahhh yes I know about that cave. My mom’s house is 5 mins away from there and the dirtbags charge everyone unknowingly. Until one day one of the locals homeless dude put me on that all beaches in Puerto Rico are public nd can’t be owned!!! I remember the hobo yelling at the guys at the gate saying wele bitcho lmao!!!🤣

In NZ I have a vivid memory of a man in his beach front property yelling at me for going on 'his' beach. I was 12 and I'd got there by walking along the beach, didnt set a single toe on a single blade of grass of his property.
He was so angry and scary I actually ended up crying and went home instead of finishing my walk and swim.
And I told my friend about it, who told her dad, who then brought me to the mans house after school to show me he was gonna yell at HIM for me (since my dad wasnt around) and tell him its public property and if its not for kids then who tf is it for? and if he doesnt wanna let kids on the beach then he can drive a hour to the next town to do his groceries because the local dairy owner will be hearing about this if it happens again

@davidrubinstein5359it wasn’t the locals it was people coming in who don’t respect the land
@davidrubinstein5359 my whole family was born there. We own a farm there. Idc if you own property nobody saying the people from pr are perfect dummy stop jumping to conclusions I said the people coming In from other countries like the Dominicans Cubans Venezuelan people who all are trying to get into the US they’ve been disrespecting the land and tearing it up on their way out. PR has been a beautiful island the gem of the Caribbean for years but in the last couple decades as many actual Puerto Ricans were pushed out and went to mainland USA and Hawaii there was a mass migration of other people running through the island which brought a major drug and crime issue that wasn’t there before. That extends to them not respecting the land. But yeah you must know all that since you own a little plot of land. Good job
@davidrubinstein5359 I’m not saying locals don’t hold accountability, that’s the case anywhere in the world. The government corruption has been rampant more than ever in recent years in PR with many politicians who steal from the people. The culture that used to be strong is wavering. But to say that it’s the fault of the people when the people have been stripped of power over their own homeland is a bit unfair. We can agree natural disasters are the biggest thing that causes most problems on the island but with half-hearted aid from the country that is supposed to support and care for them as well as the inability to fully function on their own it’s been difficult to manage for locals who can no longer support their families. Had it not been for US law PR would look a lot more like Haiti or Jamaica in terms of violence and revolution right now, but with many of the native people being forced to relocate and others running the island who are quick to sell out their own people for power many locals are more focused on trying to skate by and feed their families than fighting impossible battles with corrupt politicians and little support. The locals are responsible for their own problems however many of their problems are not their own and have causes from outside that the people have little power to combat. Many of the worse-for-ware locations is a result of this
@davidrubinstein5359 as a puerto rican, I hear that same sentiment being said by our own, so you're not alone and I'm sure you already know. That doesn't mean we should relinquish our lands.

In the United States, all beaches are federal property, some of which is delegated to the states to manage. You cannot block access to a beach. In California, we have the Costal Commission to enforce that.
In The Philippines, where I'm from, its chop chop. Such as what our government did on the popular resort island of Boracay. First, they shut the entire island down for 6 months for a major environmental cleanup and overhaul and the many establishments found to be creeping closer and closer to the beach were demolished... some buildings essentially were chopped in half.

Rich land owners and corrupt local government have made access to beaches nearly impossible for locals in Fort Walton Beach/Destin Florida, USA to get to the beaches. Every local fishing hole has been blocked or made private property. Now even the military property (US citizen owned ) requires a permit to picnic, swim, or fish on. So, if you’re not rich, you’re extremely limited in your ability to get to the beach. It’s disgusting and as un-American as it can get. But here we are.
It angers me that Rich folk from all over the world think they can just come and claim, and own island property just because they can. Fight back with whatever it takes.
Do not let them do this. Florida is being destroyed because of this shit
Florida laws cater to old money. Learned that from moving from the Pacific Coast to the East Coast. In California there must be beach access and there is no private ownership till after the high water mark. In Hawaii and Oregon there must be beach access and there is no private ownership between the surf and up till the line of vegetation. If you see a private beach sign in CA, HI and OR they’re illegal and you can post up, picnic, fish and surf.
How is it being destroyed ,you giys are the ones destroying us coming here to PR and purchasing a lot of hmoes and making them into airbnbs
We have Rick Scott to thank for that

This is exactly what's happening in America. Has been happening in my State since polio. Us Locals are sick of all of it.
I live in NJ and what they did was actually brilliant. There is a law that all beaches are public access and that the state must protect the tidal waterways and shorelines, which includes public access to any and all beaches. Only downside is you have to pay in most towns to get on the beach with a day pass or a season pass. But if it means that nobody can block off beach access for anyone regardless of social standing then I'm all for it.
Colonizers
Don’t worry, Rock Johnson, and Oprah will make sure to get it all burnt down, and take whatever they want.
The beach doesn't belong to no one. It is for the public
This exact same thing happens on the coast in Southwestern Connecticut. Most of the oceanfront homes there are owned by CEOs (and other top managers) of Fortune 500 countries.
Remember. When you take the gate down, take it home with you 😂

We have the same problem on the Bay Islands of Honduras! Even though 20 mites from the highest tide is for the public to enjoy. Foreigners Kames and Built their beach front homes end try to keep the local people from having access to the beaches.
We have the same law about lakes. 20m form a natutal lake shore belongs to the public. You may build a fence around your property, but still have to allow a path for others to reach it
There is still a path to the beach they just gotta go around the private homes. And once on the beach they can walk up and down it all they want. It's all public land by the water. These lazy fishermen don't want to go around though, they want to trample through people's yards because its a shorter walk to the water. Just go 20 miles down the coast and it's open to access.
It's crazy that you think someone is lazy because they don't want to walk "20 miles" out of the way to get to their fishing spot. It shows what kind of person you are. You don't own the beach. You cannot block access to it. There has to be a public easement. Entitlement is killing this country. People who grow up with a silver spoon in their mouth are some of the worst people on the planet. Your money doesn't make you immune to laws and you are no better than anyone else

These gates are on private property not a public access. They don't own the beach but they have the right to keep their yard from being trampled on because the local fisherman doesn't want to walk around.
It's just 20 miles down the coast to get past the community and then it's open access to the water. From there they can walk the coast to any place they want. The sandy beach is all public property.

Why this Rich people allowed to build their houses right by the water if its illegal
It's not illegal to build except below the highest-tide line (which would be stupid to build lower-than anyway). It's illegal to block access to the beach. In fact, in many places you , the private land owner, must provide that access.
Maui, HI has similar laws. All beaches are public. All beaches except military coastal establishments can be freely visited by the public. Further, all private "ocean-front" land development MUST be built well-beyond the highest-tide line, and MUST provide reasonable access to the public, including ADA compliance, to cut through their property to reach said-beaches. Kapalua Bay beaches are a good example of this. About 100 yards up from the shoreline is a lateral sidewalk, parallel to the surf line. Everything further up from that sidewalk is private property, but everything on the ocean side of the walk is open to the public. Those sidewalks periodically have abutments up the hills, leading from streets or lot parking, where people can enter and walk down to the beach.

We deal with the same thing in Hawai’i. People buy these coastal properties and decide they dont want these “poors” getting to “their” beach. The coast is for everyone to experience.
In Florida too. Its amazing how many public access spots have been closed and now only accessible to out of state tourist completely shutting out native Floridians.

@blobmonster9494 I understand that fully. However, why must the residents whom been there for decades be prohibited from using the beaches that they were using before rich people move there. If they purchased rights to that part of the island then that's different. But they can't put up a fence illegally to keep people out.
Well in all honesty Hawaii is a part of the us and if a us citizen pays for the land its theirs to do with what they will as long as they pay property tax. To remedy this Hawaii government should set aside protected land that cannot be built on or altered by private entities.

Everyone who blocks access to public property should be charged and fined. Also forced to remove their blocking gates.
