The Nazis did something similar. What Nayib Bukele has done, amounts to unlawful detention, criminal malice, violation of human rights and showboating. He could do something about the minimum wage disparity, the cost of living and food, extreme high inflation rates and many other pressing issues, instead he locked up at least 11,000 more people, than gang member exist, 261 of which have died while illegally detained, without charge for any crime. Not even 1 of the 81,110, have received any actual criminal charges or been before a judge, or are entitled to an expectation, of ever being released. All are detained under emergency powers, repeatedly being extended, again unlawful. None of these matters, are anything compared to the fact his presidency ended and remains President, in violation of Constitution of El Salvador's rights, legally allow. The man is a Dictator, who uses paid social media people to prop his image and many statements you will read, are complete nonsense, financed in "Public Relations", while his people endure extreme costs of living, people struggle to even afford food and poverty, remains a massive problem, not being addressed.

It’s a common misconception that many people have in confirmation bias and what is being taught is poverty brings crime, but when looking at stats it’s actually the other way around, crime brings poverty, destroyes businesses, tourism etc.
He is absolutely taking the right step right now and once this situation is more stable for longer, of course then he could “retire” from president position. Sure there is a chance of dictatorship, but that’s better than anarchy for its people. Criminals have even less respect for human rights in anarchy, then dictator will, dictator will at least pretend to have order.

I don't know what's behind the politics, but I can only confirm that El Salvador is super safe, at least 95% of the local people i've met (Uber, drivers, shop owners, hotel staff, vendors and even strangers on the bus) have one thing to say. They felt much safer now and able to make a living without fear of the gang related extortion or violence. I remember a few Uber drivers would tell me that if I came 3 years ago, I wouldn't be able to walk around the place i went. I am sure there are collateral damage in the gangs crackdowns, but that's up to the El Salvadorians to choose their own fate and destiny.

I am 100% Salvadoran. I was born in the city of Santa Ana (El Salvador) and emigrated to the USA when I was a child under bonafide 1980s laws of political asylum for dissidents (my parents were the dissidents). Please Note: This video is a propagandist hit-piece. The description states that this vid was done in collaboration with "El Faro." *Note: "El FARO" is a newspaper founded by Javier Siman (and Carlos Dada). Javier Siman is one of the most detested oligarchs and tax evaders of El Salvador. He also funded the ultra-right wing political party known as ARENA for over thirty years. BTW: ARENA is the same party that ruled the country for over 80% of the time since the 1980s (during the CIVIL WAR). It's the party whose founders were right wing DEATH SQUAD leaders (see: Roberto D' Aubuisson and "El Escuadron de la Muerte), the party of the bourgeois capitalist wealthy political donors, and the party of the military elite who had connections with the ruling class.*
Moreover, ARENA is notorious for having most of its politicians in office --- representatives, mayors, and presidents of the country ("diputados", alcaldes, etc.) involved in corruption scandals and theft of public funds. It's well documented that ARENA party members stole over $1 Billion in funds (in aggregate) from public coffers since the 1980s. That is factually and empirically irrefutable. *See: Alfredo Christiani, Antonio Saca, Francisco Flores, Norman Quijano, etc. It's also public knowledge that the aforementioned office holders (and dozens of other corrupt ARENA politicians) have been involved in outright theft of hundreds of millions of public funds in the last two decades. El Salvador's Minister of Justice has been actively prosecuting them and former FMLN corrupt officials. Hence, ARENA former rulers/oligarchs are retaliating against Bukele (and his administration) via Javier Siman and "El FARO" newspaper with hired foreign so-called "journalists."
Anyhow, Javier Siman -- the founder of "El FARO" was and has been the biggest donor of these ultra-corrupt politicians; beholden to the oligarchs of El Salvador. Siman has legal cases pending and being adjudicated for REFUSING TO PAY CORPORATE TAXES for his newspapers, real estate, and malls in El Salvador. I can school this "journalist" on all matters of El Salvador.
In effect -- this is akin to Donald Trump, Bernie Madoff, or Sam Bankman-Fried owning a newspaper to do hit pieces (via invited "journalists" from other countries in collaboration) on their political enemies in order to draw attention from their crimes. Every knowledgeable SALVADORAN IN EL SALVADOR KNOWS THIS, which is why my family there and over 90% laugh at these so-called foreign "journalists" (basically pseudo-journalists and bloggers). This is what we in SALVADORAN slang call, "hablar CASACA" -- or "hablar paja" -- that is to talk B/S or talk gibberish about stuff with ZERO first hand knowledge of the matter. Last, I'm sure my comment will be censored by either the YT algorithm for its length, or by the person who uploaded this hit-piece and used as a tool by "El FARO." Cheers.

That woman's empathy towards the gang members when they got arrested encuplates the core issue I've always had with how our society dealt with those gang members. They threaten her daughter, and yet she still felt sorry for them? Salvadorans became numb to violence since before the war. It was a cycle of 40 years, and we Salvadorans never had a chance to breathe. I remember what ES looked like in 92, and seeing the people still live like peasants. Then these gangs come in around 97/98 and it was an atom bomb. In ES we love to make excuses for just about anything, and we gave those gang members every excuse to exist. I know the woman is a kind person, but feeling any ounce of empathy to those monsters that threaten your family isnt a net positive. She shouldnt feel anything.

My family left El Salvador to escape the civil war when I was nine, but I've remained connected. Before the rise of Bukele, I believed the country needed to move beyond ARENA and FMLN, a sentiment many shared, leading to his victory by simply not being them. Interestingly, my relatives in San Salvador didn't vote for him in his first term due to concerns about his dictatorial tendencies as mayor. They were among the few who also withheld their vote the second time. I find your journalism sincere and well-intentioned, yet I grasp why it might provoke unfavorable reactions. The dilemma is whether short-term benefits outweigh long-term detriments. Bukele represents the culmination of lost faith in Western democratic models and a pivot towards China's approach, reflecting a global trend of seeking populist strongmen to resolve seemingly intractable issues. Your video addresses critical subjects, but when people face immediate threats and basic needs scarcity, they can't afford to consider the process, collateral damage, or long-term policy impacts. In the short run, despite recognizing innocent casualties of Bukele's approach, many feel the reduction in gang victimization justifies it. For most Salvadorans abroad, especially those with family in impoverished areas, he's seen as a savior. While I don't concur, I understand their perspective. He has enhanced a sense of security. Gang extortions were devastating small businesses, so there's hope for economic improvement. I never felt El Salvador was too dangerous to visit. I have visited numerous times before Bukele. My family there isn't wealthy, but like me, they're sufficiently well-off and educated to afford the luxury of concern. The video only addressed a few issues with his administration. Concerns include a lack of transparency in government expenditures, nepotism in awarding government contracts, rising debt without clear repayment strategies, mismanagement of pension funds causing concerns about their future viability, the judiciary being used as a tool against political adversaries, and the erosion of the separation of powers. Even if one supports his current actions, leaders inevitably lose backing, yet we are eroding the mechanisms for governmental change in the future.

We can criticize the content of this video all we want but for me what remains to be seen is how the country will fare in the next 5-10 years under Bukele's leadership. Will the safety the citizens feel continue? Will there finally be relief for the poorest of the poor? I think most of us can agree that after so many decades of hardship, danger and fear, it probably feels great to have a leader who isn't afraid of the criminals. But I think most of us would also agree that if our loved ones (innocent people) got caught up in the mix, we would be anguished. Not many of us would willingly offer to be the sacrificed few for the greater good of the whole. And we should always be skeptical and fear any concentration of power. Bukele may be doing something good now for his people, but what will he do with all that power when his country becomes prosperous? There's a saying that smart people can use their knowledge for good or for evil. I think the same can be said for people who possess a lot of power. I am happy for the people of El Salvador who feel like they can live in peace now, but just don't become complacent. And I hope Bukele's next project is on uplifting his people economically and close the gap on wealth disparity. I wish everyone peace and prosperity

I’m gonna keep it a buck because I’m actually here on the ground I’ve been living in San Miguel since 19, so beginning of Bukele presidency. I’m confused on some of the comments about this government fascist tendencies because I don’t understand how could that be possible, Just like the US we have 3 branches of government. Removing corrupt judges who let triple homicide suspects after only 3 months was necessary. It’s essential what saved us. For year corrupt politicians from ARENA and FMLN place their own appointed judges in the Justice department so that anything involving money laundering or reallocating tax funds to personal accounts like of ex president Maricio Funes who was FMLN. Yes Bukele did pander to the gangs like past governments, but if anyone remembers what kicked of the regime of exception and the state of emergency was the 80 homicides in one weekend back in 2021 because the gangs were mad the government wouldn’t fulfill what they wanted which was representation in the government because FMLN in the past years were training them and giving them weapons to be a Guerrilla guerrilla fighting force using the same FMLN playbook during the civil war. Whether you like it or not because I certainly don’t agree with Nuevo Ideas all the time in congress. But I’d rather give them the vote than any other opposition candidate who’s campaign runs on freeing gang members and closing CECOT. Many of you might not read this but I’m letting you know right now, if those gangbangers are freed, it’ll be a massacre. If they killed 80 ppl in one weekend because the government didn’t fold to them what will they do to you and me after 3 years locked in CECOT ? We are in to deep we can’t ever go back to living under a gangbanger regime

Only us as Salvadorians know the traumas and the pain that we have gone through from inequality, a civil war, and later the gang culture that was imported from the United States of America.
No external reporters or nations have the right to give out opinion without having a clue of the disaster those previous government, and external demons did to our mother land of Cuscatlan.
Europe and the United States can keep their democracy intac because we, as a Salvadorian nation, are finally thriving, protecting our family values and identity.
Our homeland now has order and discipline just like a healthy family household should be.
We dont want a democracy that is deteriorating, like the nations of the North and European nations with laws that favor delclicuency, drugs, and cities that are falling apart.
Where is the love for the people of the United States and Europe.

He hit a HR with tackling the gangs, but he hasn't tackled the other things-- road infrastructure, health care, no land restrictions, environmental issues. ES has the least amount of biodiversity in C.A., and the citizens don't take it seriously. The amount of trash at the beaches is embarrassing, and he hasn't done anything to adress that. ES's economy hasn't changed much since becoming safer, and we've lost some industrial companies.
It's the safest it's ever been. After decades of war and terrorism we can finally feel a bit of optimism. But this is a fragile thing, and after two years, there's other glaring problems. He removed the tumor and the cancer. But we haven't started our therapy to recover. And the cancer may be back if we're not careful. We may not be healthy enough.

These are the same policies and dogma that Lee Kuan Yee used in Singapour to get rid of rapists and gangs , look how that country has floorished , off course no policy is perfect but before that it was 10x worst , it is the lesser evil and the common good that must prevail no matter what the cost!!!

Of course the war on gangs isn't over.
Gangs in El Salvador is an extremely complex and difficult situation that's gonna take decades to finally eradicate these vicious terrorists . There's no such a thing as a perfect or easy solution to this problem.
It's laughable and disgusting the way these "non-biased" reporters and ONGs expect perfect measures to solve this.
Leave us tf alone. 90% of salvadorans are happy and satisfied with the way Bukele has changed El Salvador.
