Too many brilliant John Carpenter films to pick a favorite. But this one has to be up there.
The best line in the film is as Trent is being thrown in his cell at the start of the film after fighting the guards. 'Sorry about the balls! It was a lucky shot.'
"because there's a guard outside with swollen testicles that swore you wanted out"

My favorite scene is between 2 and they're both because of Sam's performance. The sheer terror in his face when he's staring into the abyss and the manic laughter at the end from a broken man. Underrated masterpiece.
there are 2 channels on youtube that for some reason have the exact and I mean exact same taste in movies as I have. This channel is one of them. Keep it up guys!

I swear every John carpenter film is so ahead of it's time that a lot of his movies, ridiculously bomb. Its unfuckinthinkable.
This is my favourite John Carpenter film. Even if it's not objectively his best, it's definitely his most unique. Maybe it's my love of Lovecraft talking, but I just adore it. I've never seen a film so effectively blend the otherworldly imagination of Lovecraft with the pulp entertainment of King.

I like this one but I like Prince of darkness and the Thing better.
Considering I'm slowly becoming a Cool Old Dude (50, Gen X), and followed Carpenter for decades, I guess I'm an unofficial high priest in the Carpenter Cult. LOL!
I discovered 'In the mouth of madness' only last year and I really enjoyed it. I think Carpenter's apocalypes trilogy were all made very well. I'd find it hard to decide whether I liked 'Prince of Darkness' more or less than this film as they are both very different. In my opinion, both of these films are worthy of repeated viewings.
I've now seen all of ya'lls reviews. There's not a bad one in the bunch.

This, and Prince of Darkness are my Carpenter favourites. I couldn't get the same love for The Thing, but hey, it's all good....and my favourite colour is blue!
Another awesome review guys. As a massive John Carpenter fan myself it's really great to see a couple of mates hanging out discussing the same films me and my mates have done for years.
By far my favourite reviewers, always watchable, well in depth, endlessly entertaining and worthy of repeated viewings.

Along with The Thing and Big Trouble, my favourite Carpenter movies.
I'm so happy to finally see this review! I love H.P Lovecraft and I love this movie. This is one of the most imaginative horror screenplays ever put on film. I'd love to see a novelization of this. I always thought that if Trent threw the manuscript into the rip, it would have solved everything. But instead he carries if back to our world and, well, like Kane says that makes him a God now.

Julie Carmen is beautiful and nobody could have played Linda Styles better.
For some reason i always saw trent and kane the same person like a pen name and secret identity and trent had a mental breakdown or some shyt. it does come across as a king/carpenter teamup
Hey guys. Before this video, I watched your "Top 5 J. C. Movies" video and then this one came on and I said , "Hell yeah!", because THIS ONE, "in the Mouth of Madness", is not only my favorite John Carpenter movie, but it's one of my favorite movies of ALL TIME, definitely in my Top 10. One you didn't mention in Your Top 5, but is definitely in mine, is probably overlooked by most people, because it was part of a TV series of one-hour movies produced by Mick Garris called Masters of Horror, and the one J.C. contributed the first year the series was on, entitled "Cigarette Burns". There are other films in the series that are quite good, and I should mention them, buy I don't want to draw this out, because "Cigarette Burns" blew them all away., as well as introducing me to one of my favorite new actors, Norman Reedus. The guy who plays Hurley on "Lost" is also great (sorry mate, my memory fails me) as is the flawless acting buy greats Udo Kier and Ray Wise (that is him, isn't it? It doesn't say). Plus this bald, shirtless, tattooed guy who's up there as one of the most frightening characters in my memory. I know you've both seen it, you probably just forgot it or didn't count it because it wasn't a "full" movie. But that was the point of this series. To see what these amazing horror directors could conjur up in a mere 60 minutes, with Carpenter knocking it out of the park. I can't help myself. I also have to mention Don Coscarelli ("Phantasm"). Jon Landis ("innocent Blood"), Stuart Gordon (just about Everything Lovecraft), and Tobe Hooper ("TCM", his 2nd year opus, "The Damned Thing" was great!) also had some strong offerings. It was all the schlock in between that brought the unfortunate 2-year run to a screeching halt, with "Cigarette Burns" the bright, but incredibly disturbing, shining star.

I’ve always though Styles was written in the way a secondary female lead for unnecessary romantic tension in a horror novel is, wooden, underdeveloped. I think it was intentional.
Exactly. This is strongly suggested in the scene in which she spontaneously starts trying to make out with John, even though they have had zero romantic chemistry and the moment is one of mortal tension. When he asks what she's doing, she says, "It's what the readers want." I think this is commentary on cliched writing contrivances, in this case, the forced love interest. This is why Cane wrote her out.

and if anything he predicted it in "They Live" first...
I love that you can pretty much say, the movie we're watching is an adaptation of the Sutter Cane novel, and everything that we see happen to Trent, is all just part of the overall story that Cane is telling in the novel.
I'm glad to see that this movie is getting more recognition. It definitely deserves it!
The movie itself works on multiple levels which is why I like it. You can see the whole film as the film based on the book an that we are the audience tricked into watching it like how sam neil was watching it at the end. You could also see the whole film as a sane man going insane from fiction like how some people claim horror movies or horror books drive them crazy.Its true crazy stuff happens to the females character but its also true we are seeing the story from Trents point of view as he is the character in the nut house whos not totally reliable as he is partially crazy or could be.The film works on multiple levels which is what I enjoy about it. You can take everything in the film literally or see the film as a guy unstable gone over the deep by a horror book.Or simply a movie within a movie.
Have you guys done The Thing yet? I'd love to see an Off the Shelf review of that.

33:04 I was in a GreyHound Bus there was a Passenger that Fell Asleep he Started Having Nightmares and Started Yelling he Had a Deep Voice it Sounded like he Was Being Stabbed to Death he Woke Up and said "I'm Sorry, I'm Sorry I was having a Nightmare" . The Bus Driver was a 5 foot 5 inch tall Black Women she was a Little Startled .
Oh, my only criticism is Carpenter's rock music seems a little inapropriate. I would have preferred a score more creepy like Carpenter's Princes of Darkness.
I saw this as a kid and always felt it was a stephen king and have searched for ages to find it- i forgot what it was called yet always remembered the atmosphere and the road scene always stayed with me.
the dark half?
Great review. I like your interpretation of how the attempt by Trent to not deliver the book isn't real. My view is that Trent really did need to bring it to the real world...and when he brought the manuscript at the end of the dark tunnel is where he failed. Dropping it on the road, or burning it, was too late.

Movies should be similar to video games where the scene changes slightly not quite the same as the original or traditional method of filming and playing.

The lighting was on point but yeah if it had greg nicotero and Sam neil were on a separate commentary with Carpenter it would be even better.

Really enjoy this I will say though that just because we see crazy stuff from the girls point of view as well as his dosent really mean that its really happening i feel this film is made in a deliberate way so that you can either see it as really happening or in the main dude an girls mind I have all ways seen this film as a showing of how people like to say films an books effects peoples minds i have all ways been under the idea the film wanted us to draw either conclusion he could very well be one of the less stable readers they mention on the news when there talking about less stable people are going crazy over the books an he simply read them an went crazy the girl seeing everything to I have seen as either she is also unstable or dont forget trent is the one telling the story from the start of the film an hes telling what the julie carmen saw when he was a sleep but there is no way he could know what she saw so to me that means hes either lying or sutter kane has written him to know it could go either way. Another clue is when he reads the movie poster at the theater it has the entire real crews name an the real directors name but he sees his name under actor as well as the other people from his story so to me that could be a hint its all in his mind also the ending with the movie in a movie you can take as we the audience have been tricked to seeing the movie

The "Haitch" pronunciation is sometimes called the "Catholic aitch" in Australia, it is an Irish thing that infests our Catholic education system, our second largest education provider. It definitely isn't an English thing. Then again, we laugh at the American "zee" instead of "zed"
