Karen Allen should have gotten an oscar for this. Amazing movie.
Just in case its never been mentioned. The gold record on voyager in real life actually has instructions on it to build a record player in universal language of mathematics starting with a digit of one going to binary. It also contains directions to find Earth.
In hindsight, maybe not our best decision lol
A record player is easy to make. Just make a cone out of a piece of paper, tape a needle to the bottom of it, put the record on a potters wheel or anything you can spin it on, and insert the needle into the groove while it's spinning. That being said, I'm hoping the scientists were smart enough to put a record player on board somewhere so it could be played easily without having to figure it all out.
Why? Interstellar travel is stupidly expensive, in terms of energy requirements. Practically impossible. Any civilization capable of it is not likely to be the stereotypical invaders, because they would have destroyed themselves long ago.
Starman! Jesus, this is a great movie. I get it...so many John Carpenter fans don't love it. It's not "The Thing", or "In the Mouth of Madness", or "They Live"...but it's such a good movie. I mean, it lives entirely on the acting of the main actor and actress, but they put themselves into it. You really feel for Allen's character; her husband is dead, and she gets a second chance with him, only not really. So you see the love she had, and how it colors her character throughout the movie. And Bridges, he just nails the fish-out-of-water aspect of the character. Also that ending quote about what makes humans so special.
Ok...I need to watch this again now.
I still don't get it. What about non-Carpenter fans? This should be far better known and appreciated than it is, for so many reasons.
Starman is such an underrated film. The music is one of the best things about it.
Yes and few people mention the last ball for her unborn son. There was always scope for a sequel.
It is overrated. The score though, one can by that in a music store, if they really just like a film's music - no shame in doing so. For example, I largely hate "Interview with the Vampire", aside from the costumes and hair designs and some of the sets, the score is beautiful and complex and dark. So goes to show you.
I was wondering when you guys would get around to this one. It was only a matter of time. I hope you guys are doing well! To answer your questions about the Voyager spacecraft, Carl Sagan was head of a project to design and build those discs. They contain many different sounds and images of Earth and Earth things. Imprinted on the disc itself is instructions on how to assemble the Machinery to play the disc. The disc itself is made of copper coated in gold, the other symbols on the disc itself describe in Universal maths specific information such as timing and location. Just so you know.
Karen Allen was also in Scrooged, the second best interpretation of A Christmas Carol.

Its a terrible lust story and a true horror story. Not Carpenter's best at all.
Pretty sure Starman wrapped principal production in the summer of '84 and was released in December that same year.... standard procedure.
I think what they were referring to was that it started production in 1981 shortly before Columbia got the script for ET, then Columbia dropped ET in favour of Starman which then went through essentially development hell until it was completed and released in 1984, bunch of rewrites and I think it went through a couple of directors before it ended up done

It went through a number of filmmakers such as Peter Hyams, Mark Rydell, John Badham,
Adrian Lyne and others were all turned down, finally John Carpenter got the job before
it ended up done properly.

Yeah. Plus you've gotta admire the fact that Chevy Chase tried to push himself and do a more serious role with this film.
I believe that the film is supposed to be more of a romance than anything.
I love this movie. Different for Carpenter, but very good all the same. I enjoy it more than E.T.

The reason why the movie ends somewhat abruptly after dead-beat alien dad leaves is because the next scene would be be-grieved human woman getting arrested. Followed by being questioned, tested, pregnancy revealed, kept as a lab rat with her half alien baby and experimented on until they both die in some government black site. Would kinda put a damper on the "happy ending". lol
Dead father would not be much help, either.

Nice review OTSR guys! Karen Allen is supercute in this one. :) I wonder why Carpenter so often had bad luck with the movie companies? Also can we get a tour of the movie, gadget etc department of OTSR?
The scene where the starman regenerates into Scott scared me as a kid.
Its so messed up. It shocks me people love this thing, but there are people who love bad movies - so... You ARE right, it IS horrifying and also, if one was Jennie, it is a HUGE slap to the face, albeit unintentional, but still insulting.
ET scared kids, too.
Back then firing a gun was rare, but wielding a gun was not.. That scene wasn't about here reaching above to defend the starman was just life as it was back then in the US, especially in the rural NW.
Starman is great but I will admit it feels like a apology for The Thing so he could get more film projects luckily he did and made more awesome films. i will say this I prefer Starman over E.T

A nice & watchable movie. Not what you would normally expect from John Carpenter knowing his history in the genre. Surprisingly unimpressive SFX. Jeff bridges as always was very good. Karen Allen is very attractive. Soundtrack is good. Overall not bad. Though it’s not his best movie it’s John carpenters most critically acclaimed fIlm.

I love this movie.
I think the balance between comedy, love story, SF and a road movie is handled perfectly by Master Carpenter.
Karen Allen is great , Jeff Bridges is awesome.
Movie looks amazing, script is very heart warming, naive at times, but extremly sweet so who cares.
It's role is to uplift the audience, and it works.
The music is amazing as well.
And what Starman says ("You are at your very best when things are worst.") about human race is so on point, unfortunately.
There are so many great moments in this film. Too many to mention really :)
I need to rewatch it very soon.
PS. about the slot machine scene. I wonder if Lynch was inspired with Starman writing new Twin Peaks series, there is a very similar theme with Dale Cooper / Dougie Jones ;)
Starman is possibly my least watched John Carpenter movie, not because it's a bad film, it's not, it's a really enjoyable one, i think it's more to do with the slow pacing, and simply because it doesn't give me the John Carpenter fix that i get from pretty much every other film he made, though this is more to do with my personal preference than the film itself.

The disc actually contains the right way to construct the phonograph, right way, speed, and side to play it, everything explained in the universal language of mathematics and binary and using the transition time of the hydrogen atom.
So this is kinda like ET, only in this one ET gets his fuck on?
Her car is a "Shelby Cobra". special edition of a "Ford mustang" with a much more powerful engine and like 3 or 4 times the cost
I watched this for the first time last year and at first it was alright but the film got better and by the end I was in tears. Good movie.
We're getting very close to It Chapter 2 and you still really need to review the first It from 2017
It's a shame that most of John Carpenters best movies didn't do well in theaters. I guess their cult status has vindicated him.

One of my all time favourite movie lines.
I think its one of the most horrific things I've ever seen in my life. She should have just got the alien to the Pentagon and moved on with her life. It really should be reclassified as a horror movie. Not even "Hellraiser" is as traumatizing.
I watched as a kid and I shared it with my wife. Its a wholesome movie.

Review : TRUE ROMANCE (1993)
I first watched this when it came out on VHS and I loved it. I cannot watch it very often as the score brings me to tears every time. Thanks for doing a review of it but it's no good criticising anything about it in my view. I just love it, much to the consternation of my wife who has no soul and fails to understand why the same thing can keep affecting me as it does. Am I alone? Does anyone else have partners who just don't get them?

22:15 Actually, there is the sex scene at the end of They Live, where the girl is riding the alien, and she sees him in his real form, and he says "Hey, what's wrong baby?" Hahaha

I love this film BUT there are pacing issues. I also love the main starman theme music.
It's a road movie. It's a journey, not a dumb action movie. What "pacing issues"? Does it stall? No. Does it go too fast? No. It goes at the speed it needs to go.

Loved this movie as a kid but didn't hold up for me. On a side note am I the only one who thinks Gary would look super cool with a big beard and a shaved head?
I think Starman is okay. I find it hard to believe John Carpenter directed this. NOT to say this film is bad or anything! Don't get me wrong lol Even as a John Carpenter film or not, I just think it's alright. Great review once again you guys! Keep it up!

I hate that John Carpenters movies get shitty reviews when they first come out. I always get a western type feel with everything. I think they are fun suspenseful maybe sad etc I just don’t get it

Wish they'd been a sequel movie where Karen allen reprised her role showing her bringing up her and starmans son seeing him working as a teacher as starman said he would grow up to be and her difficulties in keeping his heritage secret from the government and Jeff bridges could've made a cameo showing him on his planet.
Seeing the planet would ruin it. I always wanted the son to be a great teacher who becomes someone who changes the world. That ball has a part in it.
That would be screwed up nightmare fuel. No thanks. Good thing the movie didn't continue. It is trash.
This movie is so creepy! The Jennie character falling into lust after the alien imitates her beloved who is dead... it’s ridiculous. If my husband was dead and an alien took his form, I’d be realistically horrified and heart-broken and would have killed that fricken thing. It’s just gross and absolute trash. It would have been better if she never fell for that fake and merely ended up helping him to get him to the Pentagon and then seen the alien off. If I have to pick a favourite aliens movie, its "Aliens" (and "Alien") - though "E.T: The Extra-Terrestrial" is nostalgic. This flick is definitely NOT John Carpenter’s best. “The Thing” and “Halloween” remain his best work. I have to disagree with the guys on their recommendation. I don't recommend it. Save your money, go watch a better alien flick.
