  • As film fans some movies become part of our lives and the work I want to talk about today certainly became part of mine. Written as an ode to H.P Lovecraft by Mike De Luca, one of his very few screenwriting credits at New Line Cinema before he went on to be an extremely successful Hollywood producer. This movie is chocked full of references to classic cinema and homages to a writer responsible for creating his own dimension in horror.
In the mouth of Madness is the final film in director John Carpenter’s apocalypse trilogy beginning with The Thing, Prince of Darkness and ending with Madness. The only difference being that in this third and final picture, the world really does end for the main character when the screen cuts to black. This episode we tale a look at the the journey of a characters decent into the insane who finds out that reality isn’t what it use to be, this is John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness.

@@hagengilbert8102 Thanks for asking, it was just a short I made when I was teaching myself how to make make movies. It played a few festivals but that was it, only a few bits and pieces survived unfortunately. But it was a huge learning curve, Mouth of Madness was a movie I studied a lot, I just loved the look and feel of it, Carpenter is the master of atmosphere and technique on a low budget. Great filmmaker.

This film holds a special place in my heart as I watched it with my gran when I was wayyy too young to be doing so. It absolutely terrified me, especially the scene with the cop on the sofa, and I couldn't sleep for days. My gran is sadly no longer here but every time I rewatch this I get transported back to that terrifying night which was probably the origin point of my love of horror.

One of the best horror movies ever made. This is what got me into Lovecraft.

Thanks for watching. I think its one of the best movies influenced by Lovecraft, I do really like Stuart Gordon's Dagon too, even though Gordon always took liberties with his Lovecraft works to ay the least lol I recently watched a Lovecraft documentary here on youtube and Carpenter is interviewed for it talking about his love of Lovecraft's work called 'Fear of the Unknown' well worth a watch if you haven't seen it. Here is a link for it here on youtube:

I'm a big Lovecraft fan too I absolutely love his short stories especially Outsider, Dagon, The Other Gods and Rats in the Walls, then again they are all pretty great lol Thanks again for watching.

Haven't seen this one, it was released at the time when I was off grid when it came to films. Great and interesting analysis. I remember the hype and excitement going on at my school in the 70's when Assault...was released - love the score by the way.

Thanks for watching. Carpenters score is great for the movie, the stuff I wrote for this is all influenced by the cool atmospheres and great heavy metal type riffs from the movies theme. Thanks again.

I think about this one a lot. I've always loved it as a film... but there's still a niggling weird oddness to it I can't stop coming back to. Which is - it's a movie. That we are watching. All characters pop out of existence when the credits roll. In all movies. Not just this one. I'm not sure what I'm trying to communicate - a feeling, I guess, that there's another layer to this movie that went unexplored. That the story runs up against the end and could have broken the framework of being a film... but it didn't. It's totally self contained. Does that make sense? It's fine, I love it. And I'm not sure how it could have gone that extra 1 percent...

Thanks for watching. I know what you mean, there's something under the surface that's trying to break through just like the 'others' in the movie, but just doesn't quite make it. For me, the difference with Trent and other movie characters is that I think he knows that he is about to blink out of existence when the credits roll, where as most characters in other movies do not, Trent is totally self aware, wooo I just got a chill writing that sentence, just thinking about the movie lol Its such a great film and I agree with you I'm not sure what else it could have done, but it sure lingers with me too, always has since first viewing. Thanks again.

In the Mouth Of Madness is my favorite John Carpenter movie.
Is your film Freedom Room on UA-cam? I’d love to see it.

Thanks for watching, I agree I think its up there with Carpenters best. Freedom Room is not available at the moment unfortunately, a lot of the original film is lost. It was just a short film that I did to try and learn some techniques and had a limited run on the festival circuit. I did recently find some of it and if I can cut a portion of it together I'll post the link in the new year. Thanks again.
