Dave, as usual very enjoyable and informative. Since wearing my apple watch for golf I have been obsessed with keeping my heart rate up. I use a push cart while I walk/run the golf course and its amazing how good the work out is vs when I just did not know. It's also fun to haze the guys riding because they have to let me play or walk/run through. I still get the slow walk results as 7 miles in 180 minutes is painfully slow, I typically manage to get credit for 45-60 minutes of cardio. Agree on not really a necessary item, but the situational awareness on your daily life the watch provides is cool. Go to go, time to stand up.

Great review. Question - I'm would like the Series 3, mainly for fitness. I'm debating on the 38mm vs 42mm (same price). I would prefer the 42mm but I'm worried at that size the watch may be a bit annoying while working out. Do you find the 42mm to get in the way? If you could pick a size simply for the gym, would you choose the 38 or 42mm watch?

Hey Dave, Like all wrist HR monitors the sensors can't pick up the HR properly when you're doing upper limb/body work outs, especially when you're lying flat with your arms raised above you. This is mainly to do with the muscles contracting and restricting blood flow which effects the sensors. A fix to that is using a chest strap HR monitor which you can sync with the watch or stopping for a minute after the set and allowing the watch to catch up. :)

About the HR numbers while lifting --
I just watched Techy Agent's video about the same topic, and he says Mio (the company that started making consumer-grade optical HR sensors) told him that because the blood flow is erratic when contracting muscles, the pulses that the sensor can see aren't the same as what the heart is doing at that moment. This would explain why your HR was nice and high during lunges but abnormally low during chest flys and pullups.
I've done pullups with a HR strap and my Garmin, and my HR spikes during every set. I'm a little disappointed to see that optical HR sensing is kinda handicapped in this way, and I don't know if there's any way to improve it since the "problem" is due to the body and not the device's hardware or software.
Great vid, btw. Exactly the info I'm looking for.

For anyone interested, I use the watch for a mix of strength and cardio training and I have a bluetooth Polar Heart Rate Monitor Strap on my chest used in conjunction with the Polar Beat App. My calorie comparison at the end of my workout is always lower with the Apple watch than the Polar regardless of whether my session is strength or cardio. For example, this morning my watch gave me a 272 burn and Polar credited me with 388. That was a strength session. The day before was purely cardio and I got 635 from Polar and 500 from Apple Watch.

I come from a fitness background and the whole 40 calories in the shower thing doesn't surprise me. That actually sounds about right. The amount of movements you do in a shower are surprisingly a lot and would be enough to elevate the heart rate, but also you don't even need to elevate the heart rate to burn calories.
Calorie counting devices only track how much calories you burn once your heart rate reaches a level that burns more calories from fat. What they don't tell you is you can burn calories from carbs. You doing dumb chest press probably burned more cals then it stated but less than an actual cardio work out. They(smart watches) just don't have a mechanism to track how much calories you burn from liver/muscles(these two areas store glycogen[a carb which is a sugar stored in the form of a useable energy]).

Great review. I have been doing my own testing on the apple watch specifically with weight training. Though the watch is great for tracking your heart rate during cardio it is a bit erratic during heavy weight training. Based on some light research and my own experience I believe that during workouts that pump the forearms cause the watch to read inaccurately...specifically with a low heart rate. Dilated blood vessels in the forearm do not cause the problem it seems it is instead the pump in the forearm. For example if you wait a minute or so after doing bench press it corrects itself. It is still annoying though. I hope they can fix it.
