Tip for tracking swimming: You can press the side button + crown at the same time to pause the timer, the watch doesn't have to be unlocked for that so you can pause it and spin the crown to end the workout.
im in love with my series 4, but I found that battery is very inconsistent. somtimes by the end of the 2nd day(11pm) im at 27% battery, and other days im at 0% battery by 9pm. :( but that's just a small inconsistency that might be solved by just setting the watch up as new
Yeah, and I found that turning on all notifications for every app also drains the battery, so if there are certain apps where you don’t want to receive notifications you can turn those off and get a little more battery life
Thank you. So good to have someone who actually knows about fitness features properly review the watch. I’m looking forward to your review of 3rd party running apps. I’m looking for something which gives me all the data I get with Garmin connect and my Forerunner.
Wow. That's really surprising and honestly a little bit sad if Garmin and Fitbit optical wrist HR are outdone by Apple. The "Swiss Army Knife" of mainstream smartwatches isn't supposed to beat the specialists at their own game! As mentioned by others, I'm really curious to hear if you have a better/worse/equal experience with the new Polar Vantage sensor when it's out.
Polar vantage v will blow the Apple Watch out of the water in terms of fitness features. Apple will stand out for being really good at what it currently offers (and cheaper for base models 40 and 44mm). But Apple wins the in the smart watch department
@@xXxALeXFuTexBaLxXx Yep, really interested to see how the Polar turns out once it matures. Early beta reviews like DC Rainmakers look like it's not quite fully baked, but I definitely like what they're trying to do with it.
There seemed to be an unusually long delay from 112bpm to 139bpm. This is why I gave up on wrist heart rate. I use a chest strap and my watch shows changes in HR in real time. The optical was always delayed and even more so when recovering.
Hi, I had a question... When you use the watch for weight lifting do you pause the watch in between sets? During your 1 to 2 minute rest? Thank you and great video!
@5:12 the heart rate graph doesn't look any better than on S3 for example. There's quite a few gaps in between so apparently it lost track of heart rate there... Unless the reviewer was pausing the workout in between sessions?
tha_realness that’s the way they draw heart rate graphs in the native apple app... they put a point where your heart rate is at a given moment in time and don’t draw a line to the previous mark. since he was doing sets that caused very sudden big jumps in heart rate and because they don’t “connect the dots” it looks like there is a gap but there is NOT. it just jumped straight from the lower heart rate to the higher one so quickly that in the very reduced resolution they draw the graph it is unclear. if you use a third party app that draws the data conventionally it looks just like what you would expect and of course if you run or bike your heart rate changes tend to be smoother so it looks like the dots are more connected. Bottom line? No drop outs, the data is all there and using properly to calculate average heart rate and calorie burn BUT apple still does a poor job with UI and graphs in their native workout app.
By far the best fitness based reviews. What you cover is exactly what people want to actually know but it always seems to be brushed over or not reviewed at all in other reviews. Thanks for your hard work!
Hey just seeing that you didn’t have the cellular version of the watch, what’s it like listening to music with Bluetooth earphones when you run and ride without your phone
Hopefully here in the next couple of weeks. I’ve been overwhelmed with all of the new fitness trackers that have hit the market in the last 30 days so I’m trying to get to everything!
Hi, great video. I have a question. Is there a way to complete turn off the heart rate sensor and gps and auto enable them only when i use the workout app? Thank you in advance
Would you say the calories burned and the heart rate reading for the series 4 is just as accurate as the apple watch series 3? those two are all i usually care about
I use the scoshe rhythm + with my series 4. So with this would you suggest I just use the watch instead of the external heart rate monitor? Love your videos

Maybe the original had issues but sounds like series 4 has addressed that issue. I believe I read you can make the watch continuously read heart rate if wanted. It will drain battery though.
As a fitness tracker would you say this or the Garmin vivoactive 3 or Fitbit Versa is better. I like the thought of the ecg function but I would mainly want info on exercise - treadmill/cardio machine and strength training mainly. I can’t decide, I like the idea of vivoactive stress monitoring too. I would want a very accurate calories and heart rate but also like the female health function on Fitbit.
Is there a way to customize interval alerts, haptic and/or sound? I can’t seem to find an app that does that. I hate having to keep looking at my watch all the time.
A key point to the heart rate accuracy is the choice of straps, with the sport loop having the necessary adjustable settings for a snug fit. Excellent review.
That’s a great point: the new Sport Loop straps make a big difference. I forgot to make the point that we did go ahead and test those straps on the Apple Watch Series 3 as well, and the Apple Watch Series 4 sensor still came out on top by a large margin. But you are correct in pointing out that a good strap can make a massive difference. A good heart rate sensor can’t overcome a poor fitting strap.
Really looking forward to the weightlifting app segment you said you will do for the Apple Watch. I always just use the strength tracking built in mode when lifting weights but have always felt there were other more useful apps out there to use.
Great video, probably the best ive seen related to the heart rate... would be good to do a comparison video between the series 3 and series 4 when it comes to the gym lag times.
I would concur about the strength training. I notice only a slight one second lag in HR with any muscle flexion. I’ve used Garmin and Fitbit in the past and this is the best optical rate sensor reading I’ve experienced.
Jordan S compared to the Garmin Fenix 5 Plus I’d say yes. There is very little lag on strength training. Most I’ve noticed in my workouts is 3-5 seconds, whereas Garmin goes all over the place. BUT, for pure data collection Garmin is the best. So pick your poison. If Garmin i suggest a chest HR sensor paired with Watch.
Hi! I’m wondering is it possible to track activity by stock app of apple, then export them automatically to rest apps like Strava Endomondo or Relieve? Is it possible to connect? I just want to record on Apple app and have results everywhere automatically . Thanks a lot for answer, because I’m wondering about buying aw4
Can the apple watch series 4 track my heart rate constantly 24h a day? Or does the apple watch has a limit when its about tracking the heart rate? Cause id like to track my heart rate the whole day and have a nice little overview how my heart rate was during the whole day.
I have a Series 2 and I always have problems with too much sweat on the wrist which influences the heart rate sensor. Is that any better on the new Apple watches? Thats why I am using an armband for the biceps
I'll get this watch when it goes on sale for black friday 2019. I was debating to get the Series 3 now for cheap but the Series 4 seems much better and I can wait.
The biggest difference is the updated heart rate sensor. The new sensor does have greatly increased accuracy, however all other tracking seems to be the same.
So the heart rate sensor is the only big difference between the two (for sports)? Do you find the HR sensor of the AW3 good compared to e.g Fitbit blaze?
Definitely the Apple Watch Series 4, but I really wish the polar was the winner here, because I like everything else about it. But the truth is that the Apple Watch Series 4 does have a more accurate heart rate sensor.
Techy Agent thanks for the response! Wow considering polar has 9 sensors plus a bioimpedence sensor, thought the vantage will be the best wrist sensor.... thanks again for your expert opinion !!
Hi Techy agent, I was wondering if there is a smartwatch out there that is close to as good as an apple watch in terms of accuracy in heart rate sensor (for running and gym workouts), a watch that would fit a 14.5cm wrist and compatible with an Android (as I am an avid Android user), good for swimming and a good sleep tracker. I've had a look at the galaxy watch but found it was too big for my wrist. I do really like the apple watch as the 40mm would be a perfect fit but I just don't want to get an apple phone. Thanks heaps.
I noticed you have a whoop on. Since the iwatch is so accurate, do you find yourself utilizing the whoop less? I was going to cancel my whoop because the hardware feels cheap and it doesn’t connect to MyFitnessPal. I like just solely wearing my iwatch
I would say that the AW does not totally replace some of the features of the Whoop: for example, it does not give me a great idea of stress and heart rate variability and how it’s impacting me, like the Whoop can do. That being said, the Whoop is starting to feel like a dated product. And I don’t love the active fitness tracking on the Whoop, the Apple Watch is significantly better for exercise and fitness tracking.
I’m about to buy Fitbit versa, So comparing this heart rate sensor on the apple watch to that on Fitbit versa really deserves re-consideration ? or they are almost close to each by their accuracy ?
The Versa sensor is really good too, however I think I would give the edge to the new Apple Watch. But when you compare the Apple Watch stock apps against what Fitbit offers, the Fitbit app is better.
Hey Eric, I found your channel and you do a real review of devices rather than read the specs. I want to get a fitness tracker and I watched all your reviews. I wonder if you will do a review of the new Fitbit charge 3 and compare with Vivosport since price and features are kinda same except the lack of gps/music and which one is more worth it. Thank you for the reviews!
Quick note on stopping swim workouts... if your screen is locked (or even if it isn’t like during runs etc.) you can always instantly pause the workout by pressing in on the Digital Crown AND the side button at the same time. So when you stop swimming just press both buttons at the same time to instantly pause the workout, then unlock the screen by spinning the Digital Crown and then end the workout via the screen. No gained time that way and it works just as well with any other workout.
Great review. You mentioned using the AppleWatch for golf - which are your preferred apps for golf (scores, distance, etc)? Perhaps you could even consider revising golf apps in a future video?
Nice you have make the best reviews of the Apple Watch thanks! And pleasss make the video for the other app on the Apple Watch store for the strength traning and the cellular mode worth it?
Question: Do you like the Sport Loops for workouts? It seems so but I worry sweat leaving it wet / smelling and you swam with one and doesn't that leave it damp for hours? Thanks.
I have purchased several Sport Loop’s and some from third-party developers and I have liked all of them. After working out the sweat hasn’t seemed to penetrate the band because it’s made out of synthetic materials. The only exception is when I have taken at swimming, then it did get a little damp but it dried off quickly
Yes, as much as I hate to admit it, a smart watch is the best fitness tracker and it’s called the Apple Watch Series 4. I truly wish I could give that prize to Garmin because I love what they’ve been doing, but that wouldn’t be the truth.
Hey Eric, always enjoy your reviews! Was wondering if you’d put the Apple Watch 4 over the Garmin Vivoactive 3, Fitbit Ionic, or the new Samsung Galaxy Watch? And was curious - what kind of battery life are you getting as someone who uses the fitness features regularly?
In terms of battery life, the Apple Watch is not going to win any prizes. But the new series 4 Beats all of the competition in terms of heart rate accuracy
I can't wait for the "third party apps" follow up, mate :-} Can I use an Apple Watch just with a 12.9" iPad PRO (Without any iPhone)? I'm very tempted to get a Series 4
Great review from being informative and well done. The series 4 is my first Apple Watch obtained for helping with recently diagnosed heart issues. My doctor was pleased about it too. Aside from that though I just find it to be a very cool gadget. Looking forward to your further reviews. The atmosphere of learning and even an entertainment value is very good. Thanks.🙂👌🏻⌚️
Yes, it is the Whoop. In short, I’d say that in terms of fitness tracking, it is okay. Not the best, but that’s not what makes it great: what I REALLY like about it is the ability it has to see how my training and sleep is effecting my body. It can accurately look at what I’ve been doing and how my body is responding, and give me important feedback on how hard I can push myself the next day or how much sleep I need. This is more of a coach on your wrist than a fitness tracker, but I kind of love it. One thing I don’t love about it: the strap sucks. It’s very thin and comfortable but it’s already fraying. It’s basically just a cheap piece of elastic band.
I use the same combo. Love the apple watch but Whoops overall strain tracking and its sleep coach are great tools that as of yet nothing else comparable on the market.
Great review. I’ve been searching for weeks for a review focusing of the optical heart rate sensor redesign and its performance. Glad to finally get a quality review of it! Thanks!
I finally got mine as well and it amazing.. i just wanted to ask what are you wearing on your other wrist in the gym and while cycling .. is it an activity tracker as well.. Thanks
It is, it is the Whoop Strap 2.0 - I did a review on it a couple of years ago but they have upgraded their service and algorithms since then so I am re-testing it.
Hi Eric, when you are out on the run with the watch only (gps, no IPhone) Is Siri then able to give you your current pace? Or do you need WiFi connection for that function?
Yes, it’s a great upgrade but I have no doubt that there will be a lot of competition heating up between all of the wearable makers. Garmin and Fitbit will be fast on their heals to catch up.
Good morning Eric, Just bought Apple Watch 4 for my wife and I don't see the Strength Training portion of the Workout App on the series 4. What are you using for free weights and machine resistance training? Thanks Eric, for the good review.
Really detailed and technically informed video as usual, awesome!I regular run and recently damaged my Amazfit Stratos, was gonna just replace it (or get a Garmin VA3) but now seriously considering getting a AW4 (based all the extra smart watch features). Do you think I’ll be missing out on running real time metrics and GPS info if I get the AW4?
I would go with the versa and personally recommend staying away from the newest Scosche because I’ve had dozens of people report quality control issues where it breaks after only a couple of months of using it.
In my honest opinion, even though I love the Whoop, I don’t love it for tracking exercise. But where it really impresses me is on how well it does tracking the impact of exercise on my body so I know when to push myself for when I need to rest. The heart rate tracking on the Apple Watch series for has been significantly better than the Whoop.
I don't think you can pair the apple watch with a garmin chest strap monitor. If you can, I would like to know how? There are others you can pair it with.
Finally, someone reviewing the accuracy of the HR. Thanks! Looks like Apple is doing some magic with machine learning to improve the accuracy of the readings. Awesome stuff, I will sell my Vivoactive 3.
They have done a lot of work to get more accurate for their machine learning models. I remember reading how they had a ton of workers plugged into measuring equipment to collect data. They should fix now on the software side, add show better the info like Garmin does, hopefully in the next watchOS update.
Tip for tracking swimming: You can press the side button + crown at the same time to pause the timer, the watch doesn't have to be unlocked for that so you can pause it and spin the crown to end the workout.
This is one of the best informed review of the Apple Watch on youtube. Job well done Eric. Keep the video coming.
Thank you!
Just picked it up yesterday. Switched to Verizon and got iPhone 8 for wife and I and a series 4 watch for both of us as well

Hi Eric, Great review. How would you compare the apple watch 4 vs fitbit versa for gym based activities. Thanks
Hello!
I have a question : )
I was interested in buying the original Apple Watch for measuring my heart rate during my High-Intensity cardio sessions. Unfortunately I was told that it was not only inaccurate in measuring heart-rate but equally importantly it did not have a 'Continuous' heart rate sensor/feature.
After viewing your video I see you mention it now has an accurate heart rate sensor however I did not clearly see you mention if it has the ability to Continuously display heart rate or it only measures when you flick your wrist?
Thanks for your review.

Great review as usual. It does seem like Apple finally got it right with the Series 4.
How are you liking yours so far, any counter to what my video says? I suppose I’ll have to wait until your full review! Haha!

Really looking forward to the weightlifting app segment you said you will do for the Apple Watch. I always just use the strength tracking built in mode when lifting weights but have always felt there were other more useful apps out there to use.

I can't wait for the "third party apps" follow up, mate :-}
Can I use an Apple Watch just with a 12.9" iPad PRO (Without any iPhone)? I'm very tempted to get a Series 4
Great review, looking forward for the third party apps...in Germany there is a delay on the watch I’m getting my watch in the store 14.11.2018 😎😎😎
What about the battery life after using it? Is it much better than previous one?
Was wondering the same thing.
Not really, battery life has been about the same
What about Fitbit ionic? I’m trying to decide wether get Apple Watch 4 series or Fitbit ionic.
Both are top notch choices. I have another video featuring the ionic, but either way, they are both great!
Can you turn off activity tracking while driving??
Your reviews are always the best and the most detailed just what I wanted to see. Thank you for covering so much detailed!!
Would you say the sensor on the applewatch is more accurate than the polar oh1 ?
Close, but not quite. The OH1 has better placement on the arm, and that makes a big difference.
Witch is the best application for the gym workout.?
A witch on a broom stick
Hi Eric. Is it “Whoop” on your wrist? What can you say about this fitness tracker?
Thanks for the review!
Would love to see the third party app reviews. Subscribed. Can't wait!
👍 I’m hoping to start rolling out my app reviews next week
Can you turn off sleep mode? I want it to never sleep just like a real actual watch
Great review. I’ve been searching for weeks for a review focusing of the optical heart rate sensor redesign and its performance. Glad to finally get a quality review of it! Thanks!
You bet!
I finally got mine as well and it amazing.. i just wanted to ask what are you wearing on your other wrist in the gym and while cycling .. is it an activity tracker as well.. Thanks
It is, it is the Whoop Strap 2.0 - I did a review on it a couple of years ago but they have upgraded their service and algorithms since then so I am re-testing it.
thanx man ... great review btw
Hi Eric, when you are out on the run with the watch only (gps, no IPhone) Is Siri then able to give you your current pace? Or do you need WiFi connection for that function?
You can see you current pace, but to have Siri give it to you, you would need to be tethered to your phone or have the lte version.
Techy Agent thanks!
So sad, I am unable to upgrade to the series 4... will have to hold onto my series 3! Great review Eric! Thanks!
Paul bakker I think he just used the “other” option on the workout app
Heart rate chart unavailable is because you didn’t swim for long enough for it to gather the necessary data for a full graph
Yes, thanks for the pro tip. I have figured that out after the fact, unfortunately.
I have the same watch and swim a lot. You have to click down the band tightly on the wrist while you swim and the chart will be there every time!
I cad set up one of my ekg system to a monitor and view my pqrst wave as I exercise .
Please Review Huawei Watch GT
Great review! Very helpful for me to understand the Series 4 tracking capabilities! Thank you! Looking forward to the 3rd party apps review.
Which apps do you use for weight lifting???
Really detailed and technically informed video as usual, awesome!I regular run and recently damaged my Amazfit Stratos, was gonna just replace it (or get a Garmin VA3) but now seriously considering getting a AW4 (based all the extra smart watch features). Do you think I’ll be missing out on running real time metrics and GPS info if I get the AW4?
You won’t miss out on real time run metrics because you can download an app like Strava and get all of that
Hey bro... Just got a stratos 2 months back..not happy with how it tracks work outs... Should i go for a versa or scosche 24 +? What do you recommend
I would go with the versa and personally recommend staying away from the newest Scosche because I’ve had dozens of people report quality control issues where it breaks after only a couple of months of using it.
Fitbit Ionic vs Apple Watch 4. Which one should I get. Specifically for fitness.
Jhoan Palacio Apple Watch series 4- sold my ionic
Link for 3rd party app review?
Should I get space gray
Great review. What app you use to track sleep?
AutoSleep. I love it, fantastic app.
How did the heart rate of apple watch compare to the whoop? Ive had some differences in max heart rate between the two.
Will the watch fit if you put boxing gloves on?
Not too well: I haven’t really found any watch to fit well under gloves, especially if you use wraps.
I don't think you can connect it with Garmin heartrate straps because they are ant+ and applewatch is bluetooth!
does it count steps?
I don't think you can pair the apple watch with a garmin chest strap monitor. If you can, I would like to know how? There are others you can pair it with.
Finally, someone reviewing the accuracy of the HR. Thanks! Looks like Apple is doing some magic with machine learning to improve the accuracy of the readings. Awesome stuff, I will sell my Vivoactive 3.
Yes, it’s great to see Apple making some hardware and software advances
They have done a lot of work to get more accurate for their machine learning models. I remember reading how they had a ton of workers plugged into measuring equipment to collect data. They should fix now on the software side, add show better the info like Garmin does, hopefully in the next watchOS update.
