    I know a lot about Renault traffic's driven and fixed them most my life the gearboxes have a reputation of going wrong the reason is mainly the oil the recommended oil is too thin also there's a lot of pirate copies on the market you can't tell the difference made in Russia and their complete copy the only difference is a slightly different colour. If you use a pirate copy oil the gearbox won't last long. I will let you know a good oil to use.

      @@jesshowe4591 Excellent, thanks for the reply 2 years later!! Have been thinking about getting a vivaro as my next van, but these gearboxes seem to be off putting. From your experience, do you think using that oil would lessen the likelihood of the problems seen in this video?? Many thanks!

      It was good fun really, Steve, but it wasn't my van and I wasn't involved in taking it apart. If it had been Herman then I might of felt differently. The company helps too. Normally, you don't need to take the front off the vehicle to change the gearbox but in Chas's van it had seized on to the engine and he couldn't get any tools in there to get it free.

    Hi Ads,Zoe. Hope all’s well with you x👍
    Ads can I ask advice please,how do you get on with habitation checks. Is it something you have done. My problem is the penguin peter is so old I’m told our gas locker is not up to modern standards within the gas locker ie protective installation around the locker walls etc.do you have any knowledge on the subject please,or any vlogs.
    Cheers mate
    Anthony Hopewell. 🐧🐧

    • @charlessmillie8774
      @charlessmillie8774 3 роки тому +3

      Hi penguin pete you can buy an insulation fire proof board and bond it to the inside or the outside of your locker with fire proof adhesive.
      As long as the gas bottles are secure and you haven't affected the drop out hole ie the vent hole you should be ok.
      If you'r not sure then you can go onto the gas safe register and have a look there's no current regulation certificate for motor homes yet but I'm sure they can help.
      Stay safe and well hopefully that will help.
      Chas 👍

    • @HermanHitstheRoad
      @HermanHitstheRoad  3 роки тому

      Hi Anthony and Penguin Peter, I don't have any knowledge of this and we haven't had a hab check. I think (and I might be wrong) it's only necessary for new mohos to have a hab check each year for the warranty. It's not a legal requirement or required for insurance. Your gas locker may not be up to modern standards but does that mean it won't fail the check?
      Let us know how you get on 👍👍🚐

    Renault recommend ELP Trasnself NFP 75W80 the problem is the market is flooded with Pirate copies of this oil and even genuine Renault is selling counterfeit oil because they can't tell the difference it's made in Russia it shipped to France containers mixed with genuine on pallets and shipped out and to all of Europe. So avoid ELP and Total oils for engine and gearbox engine oil turns to jelly and blocks up all oil ways. A good gear box oil that I use for traffic is COMMA EP 75w80 Mineral.

    I had a re con gearbox in my 2008 2.0L Trafic 2 years ago from a guy on eBay I took it all the way to Dudley from Hertfordshire to use the guys recommended garage, it’s only done 16k and went bang last night on the A1, it wasn’t any good from when it was fitted was told to let it run in which was BS ,sadly I’m now going to have to attempt this myself as I’m self employed and need my van and don’t have the funds for a garage,any tips on where to get a good gearbox would be much appreciated,engine is sweet although just done 100k although it’s due a timing chain I’d say, I’ve had the van from new so pains me to think about scrapping it and I’ve no way of getting a new van as it stands, what would you recommend please ?

    Thanks Ads,
    What it is, I’m desperate to get someone to look and sort a leak in the roof of penguin peter, but people I contact ask if I have had a habitation check, and answer is no, then you can feel them backtrack because of the age of peng. As luck would have it I found gas engineer who fixed my fridge, and he could not issue gas safe certificates because of the issue with gas lockers. To his credit he did fix fridge . Ooh circle and round come to mind. Ha ha
    Thanks Ads I’m sure chaz would love a few days in Malvern. Looking forward to next video mate to cheer myself up 😢

    Thank you guys, you've done well ! I fear that i have to change my clutch trust bearing on clutch at the same time on my Trafic. Do you recon that i need to pu down all the front as you did or not? I would prefer not to, that is a pain to drain all the coolant system and regas the aircon. Cheers from France

    • @HermanHitstheRoad
      @HermanHitstheRoad  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Old Kid, we don't think you'll be able to avoid taking the front off of your van. Remove the plastic panels underneath to see how much access you have but you'll probably have to do exactly what we did because you have to take the gearbox out to get to the clutch and bearing and slave cylinder.

    Nightmare!......I’ve been recently looking at these vans, trafic/vivaro, at my budget they are all around 80k-130k mileage, I keep reading the gearbox are common problems, would it be best the steer clear of these vans and just get a transit?

      They are all as bad as each other m8. I have a 2017 with 19,000 miles on the clock with a knackered gearbox . I bought it off eBay with an overheating problem with about 1500 miles on the clock. Vauxhall wouldn’t honour the 3 year warranty, as the 1st owner tried to cure the problem with Radweld. Vauxhall more or less washed their hands of it. At the end of the day it’s Renault which is pure SHITE. AVOID AVOID AVOID.

      The gearbox and engine couldn't be parted. A garage would charge by the hour and they would also have had difficulty removing it. Therefore, they would charge more. I hope that explains it an0ker?
