I worked on the Princeton Tokomak in 1972 as a student intern. They were also probing the conditions required for initiating fusion, but never got the practical part of the power out > power in problem solved. I did see some internal parts that had been replaced, very bulky steel sections that had been cut like with a knife by the energetic plasma. I’ve been waiting 50 years for this.
The average nuclear fission plant in my country (the United States) produces ~1 gigawatt of power. The power produced is more than the power needed to operate a nuclear fission plant, so they have a net energy gain, not loss. The problem with fusion, by contrast, has long been that it took more power to initiate the reaction and operate the plant than we got out of it; i.e. there was a net energy loss. This net energy gain from a fusion reactor is a decades-awaited achievement. Fusion has some key advantages over fission. It's inherently safer than fission, it generates less radioactive waste, and ultimately it can produce more power. But, fission is much easier to achieve.

Perry also stated in 2017 that he regretted campaigning (in 2012) on abolishing DoE. He's also acknowledged, at least in part, anthropogenic climate change. Unlike Trump, who continues to be an ignorant, corrupt, lying sociopath. Just saying, credit where due.
Yes, and he did not even know what that department did. When he found out, he was on board with keeping it! Read all about it in Perry's new book entitled, "I'm An IDIOT."
Energy is critical for effective defense, and effective defense is necessary for us to, y'know, not die … I'm not sure what "they" you're referring to but if you don't care about being safe, move to Ukraine.
This is an absolutely amazing feat in science. That being said, I do fear that fossil fuel lobbyists will try their hardest to make sure this doesn't come to fruition.
This is almost like a breakthrough in solar. It's like creating your own sun and extracting the energy directly without the need of inefficient and polluting(from fabrication) solar cells.
Not just space travel but once we can extract antimatter during the fusion reaction and be able to control a matter/antimatter reaction PERHAPS warp travel is within reach... Allow me to elaborate, Alcubierre has written a paper on theoretical faster than light travel.
The reality of this is most of these energy in/energy out equations usually only consider the ignition energy vs the output and not the energy required from the high pressure water pump cooling, the energy required for the magnetic coils to keep the plasma in place, the detectors..etc
This is true, but as the technology continues to progress as it has history indicates it will it may become applicable technology. This step demonstrates the underlying physics holds water, wich is hugely important.

So cool. We really live in interesting times!
It's truly amazing... But creating energy is only a portion of the problem... Energy storage technology is still significantly behind
Where would we be if energy department had the military budget?
We'd be speaking German, Japanese, Korean Russian and not had the chance to develop this

This is incredible. Does anyone know what is the net energy loss of Nuclear Fission process? I'm curious how it compares to Nuclear Fusion.
One thing to bear in mind is that technology is not static. Maybe what net ratios are possible is a better question.

Don't forget Republicans like Rick Perry wanted to shut down the department of energy.
