I hope at some point you will watch Shine, the true story of the Australian prodigy David Helfgott, who fell to mental illness and was hospitalized for a decade before being released and finding his way back to music, after a fashion. Geoffrey Rush - maybe you remember him from "Shakespeare in Love" - won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Shine.
And the cigarette... The character here is severely mentally ill, especially at this point. He was a "bum" who snuck in and just started playing, so it's a huge part of the scene that he's not clean and crisp. He's a "madman" who has found an outlet.
I can't believe you reviewed my favorite TV show and my favorite drama!!! I honestly never even noticed during Sense8, But Geoffrey Rush won the Golden globe for portraying David Helfgot and he deserved it❤
He won the Academy Award for Best Actor, my man. 1996 for this performance. He was also the star of "The King's Speech", "Finding Nemo", he played Peter Sellers... an absolute legend and a movie (Shine) that is definitely one of the best Australian movies ever made.
We made a movie about a pianist in college and I acted as a body double for the main actor. And he was enthusiastic enough to take lessons from me. And he did a fairly decent job on the shoot but obviously couldn't learn the whole piece. If a rookie actor from a college could put in the effort to learn a bit of the pieces then surely such high budget movies should be able to do that too. It's understandable but slightly ruins the viewing experience for me personally. Just slightly tho. Great videos btw. You guys are killing it
Thanks for your support! I love it when actors go the extra mile to learn the instrument. Ryan Gosling in La La Land, and Timothy Chalamet in Call Me By Your Name both did a wonderful job. Apparently Ryan Gosling spent 2 hours a day 5 times a week for 3 months with professional help to prepare for his role... Kudos to the rookie actor in your college to go that extra mile as well!
I thought Geoffrey Rush was pretty good in that scene from 'Shine'. Other scenes worth checking out are with Holly Hunter in 'The Piano', Adrien Brody in 'The Pianist', Tom Hulce in 'Amadeus' and Mr Bean at the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony. Some are real, some are mimed. I've no doubt the 4 of you will be able to tell which is which!
And could I possibly forget the hilarious scene from 'A Song to Remember' where Chopin and Liszt have a conversation while simultaneously playing Heroic Polonaise.
This isn’t a classical music or pianist movie but in Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World they actually taught the actors how to play their instruments. They actually took the time teach them the electric guitar, drums and the bass besides Michael Cera who already knew how to play and that’s dedication.
It's weird to have such bad 'piano playing' in a series that's probably gonna have a lot of interest from musicians, since they are likely to notice this stuff. Probably just don't show the guy's hands at all rather than this garbage. Plus they cut out the middle part of the intro, makes zero sense.
YANKS! Shine, is a movie about David Helfgott and nothing else. I would "love" to see anyone of you play The flight of the Humblebee live. Welcome to the real life. (And the fingering is Geoffrey Rush who learned the piece, but he did not play it in the movie of course.)

You might also remember him as the evil pirate in Pirates of the Caribbean. One of the best actors of all time.

Thank you so much for your suggestions! These are definitely going on our list for our future reactions!
Mr Bean!!! That was a riot. I'm not sure I've watched the whole thing. Thanks for your suggestions!

On Shine the actor has some piano skill and he was his own hand double 🙂
Right?? It was very believable. The wrist movements were quite accurate for the articulation that we hear!
