      It's the same for virtually every basic staple like that. I worked in a pasta factory. Same pasta going into 10 different branded boxes. There might be quality tiers and some variations but it's all coming from the same factories. Capitalism encourages the creation of illusions based on our desires for status and quality that can be easily manipulated. Communism of course pretends to eliminate that but it's just based on envy rather than virtue.

    Man I envy people on the right's sense of tradition and purpose, and I agree with so much about the overreach of government that the modern left largely encourages and demands, but there is just no way your average secular joe is going to give a shit about this neo-Christian future so often projected. Despising the left can cause people to not despise Christianity, but all I ever hear from the religious right as an argument is variations of 'It's right because it says so.' I say this as someone quite sympathetic to Christianity.

    35:00 why does art have to be political at all? The framing of the answer is just wrong.
    Yes, the Byzantine _EMPIRE_ built the Hagia Sophia. It wasn't built out of a sense of altruism or art for the sake of beauty.

  • @Jules-Is-a-Guy
    @Jules-Is-a-Guy 2 місяці тому +1

    I always make this point, but yes, the functional, federal apparatus of government doesn't "value" anything, at least not in the ways and complexities described in this discussion. (It's perhaps a broad composite of some shared values to some extent, for the sake of mere practical utility).
    That would only reliably happen if we all lived in villages, fully autonomous communities in a small world. It's not up to the government to primarily emphasize a rich patchwork of culturally derived, interconnected values. It's up to the groups and individuals through the course of their own lives, interactions and traditions, (who are protected during wartime and minimally/moderately governed during peacetime BY this malleable, effable superstructure,) to retain or remake, their own values, sense of meaning, local cultures, etc.

    43:35 This whole part is rly good by MacIntyre. As a non-believer, I was using the Church/State dichotomized construct from a secular perspective, to delineate the nature of group-level social engagement for particular individuals, in a "multicultural" society (in previous channel comments).
    The crux was, this notion of Church by its very nature has narrower scope and deeper roots, and State vice versa. It's important that a large society have both, but I also posited that Church (which as MacIntyre articulates well, is necessarily specific and distinctive in its local incarnation, Douglas Murray also makes this point well,) must usually correspond with groups of ppl who have been present in a community for an extended period of time, and might typically be a particular ethnocultural group, or combination of a few groups.
    In contrast, I reffered to new immigrants as an example of persons who would not immediately have the depth of cultural belonging implied by Church, and might be (at least temporarily) more oriented toward the pseudo-culture of State. It's possible that this is necessarily a transient stage, in a functional society, and demands too much of State, although I previously made a somewhat different argument related to this topic, incorporating a few other variables.
    That previous analysis involved, in part, a suggestion that human gene expression may be suppressed in a novel environment, until/unless the depth of local familiarity necessary is established to shift toward the Church polarity, additionally the most adaptive perceived position on the continuum at a given time, might inherently denote a feeling of "meaning" via proper "alignment," perhaps definable in this case as niche adaptation.

    • @slash_em
      @slash_em Місяць тому

      If I understand your line of thinking here you seem to think that immigrants would be outsiders to Church. But the religions are all supra-national. A Catholic immigrant from Nigeria to Japan would find a Catholic community already there.

    • @Jules-Is-a-Guy
      @Jules-Is-a-Guy Місяць тому

      @@slash_em True (and this might help facilitate assimilation) but remember, the essence of the argument of localists and conservatives, is that there are core differences for particular groups and cultures, in particular places, and within specific communities. And therefore that genuine, deep-rooted social engagement, is only possible at the local level.
      (Overarching government will always be somewhat 'administrative' and wide-ranging with shallow roots, which doesn't mean it shouldn't exist).

    I'm a moderate, who's been sort of lurking in the online right space for a while.
    The thing is, Auron's just not correct, specifically in that de-globalization will see enormous profit and re-shoring of manufacturing/industry for the US, beginning within the next decade. You can't say it's not working at all, and that it isn't going to work. Geopolitically and economically, the future, and near-future, are very bright for the US. (Ppl will benefit from these developments, enabled by more/less the existing system).
    Also, it seems ridiculous to suggest that the ideas established in the nation's founding, haven't been largely retained, and recapitulated periodically over the decades and centuries. It doesn't make sense to reduce the founding charter, to the exact policies that were in effect at the time. (That's a straw-man).
    The justifiable criticism involves a civil society push for a healthier culture. This seems more in line with Benjamin's ethos (which is probably one reason I like this channel) and involves a brand of localism, that stops short of a fundamental critique, and total restructuring of the nation.
    Regarding Benjamin's position specifically, I don't mean to project my own opinions: as far as a "total restructuring of the nation," he questions ppl on this often, and seems interested in the subject, and possible alternatives along these lines. But from what I've heard, while he recognizes and explores some core challenges of our system, I have yet to hear anything amounting to a total repudiation of the foundations of liberal society.
    *Catz rule.

      You mean the part were is accurately pointed out that the US constitution only works for the people it was made for? That you can't Print it out and hand it to any other group of people and have it work? Make no mistake, the constitution was functionally dead the minute the ink was dry; as soon as the population that made it died off it ceased to matter.
