Thanks for the guide. Reporting in from 2023. I've worked for a couple days attempting to duplicate this. On a Raspberry Pi 3B+ there are many extra steps I had to go through. I've also been trying to get this going on a Pi 1 and kept having problems - finally had success by going all the way back to LibreElec 8.2.5... the never versions just have too many bugs on the original Pi 1.

Good to know, thanks! Thankfully it's not a big deal to use the older versions, as long as it won't been left connected to the internet.

Just made myself a "Family Guy Shuffler" thanks to this, I'm using an HDMI to composite converter connected to a RF modulator until my Raspberry Pi AV cable arrives. Cool stuff!

Thank you so much for this; I really appreciate it. I just set this up using a 3b, and libreelec 9.2.8; so far it’s working perfectly. I didn’t need to add the SD code with my CRT and composite out over the 3.5mm jack on the pi. I also had to change to the audio to analog in kodi settings to get rid of the awful buzzing / clicking sounds.

I had updated with a post, but then deleted it because I wasn't sure of what I was talking about, but now I'm100% sure. The latest image LibreElec doesn't work. I tried the older images that were closer to the time of your tutorial, and they worked for me. 9.2.6 and 9.2.8 works so far. When you use 9.2.6, it'll just update to 9.2.8 anyway. So for those having issues, you can try this, and once everything is the way you like it, disconnect it from the internet to make sure nothing gets updated and broken. In LibreElec, you can check the box that says "SHOW ALL," and you get to choose older images from the drop down.

Huh, that's bizarre. I just recently built another one of these (6 total now) and I don't remember if I used the latest version, or just whatever was on my PC. Either way, good to know. Glad you got it sorted!

    • @t0nito
      @t0nito Рік тому

Yeah I just tried this on the latest version and it turns out they changed the whole thing, you have to create an autoexec service addon and all those shinanigans, I tried it with these commands and it always give a "Failed to playback" error message, I guess the command lines are also different or something, I'm gonna try downloading an older version.
UPDATE: Just tried this on 9.2.8 and works perfectly!

This project is getting better every day. For some reason, I always assumed the composite out was only available on the older pis. Can't believe it's on all my pi 3B's and B+ all this time. LOL! I've now eliminated HDMI to RCA converters, much less clutter now. I'm not using the channel plus method though because the coaxial in my walls deliver wired fios to my rooms. Instead, I use blonder tongue agile modulators with rabbit ears to transmit wirelessly. Got 6 modulators in a central location, will run 6 channels. 2 pis down, 4 more pis to go. LOL! Thank you very much for your tutorial BTW, very much appreciated.

Hi! Love this project and I've already gotten an RF modulator set up to do something like this on my own, but I was wondering if you'd be willing to help me take it one step further. I've used a Pi before but know little about LibreElec or python. Would it be possible to somehow make this alternate between two media folders? So like, one is full of movies/tv shows, while the other is full of old ads, bumpers, and various interstitials. Randomize both and alternate. Gives it a little more of that TV channel flair. The only other project similar to this I've found is FakeTV which uses Plex and is far too complex for what I want.
Planning on using a Pi 3B+ for this. Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

I think maybe. When I made this I didn't know any Python. Now I know a little, so I may revisit it. I have a bunch of station IDs I'd love to sprinkle in between episodes.

I've been configuring with my pc and a HDMI monitor, when I get to the part where I reboot, Kodi comes on and everything and I get to the part where it says "connecting to cec adapter" but then it just goes back to the kodi home screen, no videos playing.
My set-up will be a little different. I want to HDMI out from my Pi 3B+ to a HDMI to RCA converter, this will then go into an Agile RF modulator. That command in putty that you put SDTV_ASPECT=1, do I need to do this in my case? I'm wondering if this is the issue. I'm adding this command like you, but I actually just want to HDMI out.

The media can't be on the same SD as the OS? I started off this tutorial with a 128gb SD card flashing libreelec to it. Then I came to the part where you said to format a USB drive, then I realize 128gb for the OS is a waste, right?

    • @probnotstech

I think it can, I just prefer to keep them separate for ease of changing the media files. You'll need to copy the files to the SD card using something like WinSCP connected to the Pi, since Windows won't be able to read the Linux partitions.

I followed this tutorial with my Raspberry Pi 3a and composite doesn't do anything past the rainbow splash screen, which I believe is the zoomed in OpenElec logo. I see a black screen with the glow of the off-screen white boot text, but nothing after that. If I plug HDMI back in, it boots fine. I even set Kodi to 720x480i, thinking maybe that was necessary. The auto execute code doesn't want to work over HDMI either.
I'm going to play around with it more tomorrow.

Yes! It's kinda hacky and unfortunately I can't find the forum post I got this from. You need to create a copy of the skin currently being used (in my case it was estuary). Then rename (or delete) the xml files for the visualizations you want to disable . Here's my notes, not sure if they're still current:
      # copy skin folder and change it's content
      cp -r /usr/share/kodi/addons/skin.estuary /storage/.kodi/addons/skin.estuary.edit
      # if name is also changed then new skin must be selected from Kodi settings !!!
      sed -i 's/id=\"skin.estuary\"/id=\"skin.estuary.edit\"/' /storage/.kodi/addons/skin.estuary.edit/addon.xml
      sed -i 's/name=\"Estuary\"/name=\"Estuary (Edit)\"/' /storage/.kodi/addons/skin.estuary.edit/addon.xml
change the names of DialogSeekBar.xml and DialogBusy.xml

Yeah, You would just need extra rf modulators- which could get ugly. Alternatively what you could do is use cron to schedule the running of different python scripts which you can use to run different programs at different times on different days.
On the bit about using a Raspberry Pi 3, the major advantage you will get is being able to use WiFi. My recommendation with this in mind is to use a NAS (RAID enabled?) drive that can be mounted in /etc/fstab, That way, you can schedule the running of many different shows without the storage limits of USB flash.
