This a really interesting project. From 2013 to 2017 i was really poor, so i downloaded the first 25 seasons of The Simpsons and put them on an old laptop connected to my tv. Cable tv was beyond affordable for me at the time. I simply had VLC Player run the 25 seasons continuously to the tv. Normally id run them in order but sometimes id let them be random. So when i got home and turned on the tv, there they were, and id watch until i fell asleep, if i woke up in middle of the night, i could watch till i went back to sleep. In the morning id watch thru breakfast, then leave home, with VLC still playing. Kind of a poor man's version of this project. Sometimes id switch it up with 20 seasons of Law & Order, those were just about the only shows i had then. Now i just do streaming with Hulu and Netflix but i really like this project and i still had kids at home i'd set this up for them. Thanks for sharing!
I know that game, i literally did the same thing until streaming services were available!
My man, that is how I survived university in the mid aughts. Only without Law and Order, and nothing past season 10 of The Simpsons
Looks great, thanks. Pro tip: Put the headers through the Pi GPIO holes but don't solder them yet and connect them to the screen connector so they're perfectly aligned. Then you can solder the header pins.
Very cool, the range of potential options for creating something alike is truly vast.
Oh yeah, I've got a ton of ideas!
I just watched this whole thing. I really wanna make it and I feel so dumb watching you Wizz through this
Thank you so much for making this tutorial! I've been working on this project for a while and was so confused why mine wasn't working. Realized the player wouldn't work on Bullseye so I went back to Buster and followed along with you and it worked! Great job making this easy to understand.
But did the Simpsons predict this?
I'm gonna go ahead and say yes, absolutely
@@TalkingSasquach did u ever fix the speaker issue ?? I’m having the same problem .. was it the speaker or the mono amp?? Thanks
@@CesarMartinez-tp4bx turn the amp down some, then turn the volume up and see if that helps
@@TalkingSasquachwill try 👍🏽
your literally alwasy making such good content, super easy to understand, very good instructions, great angles, and you actually care about improving the channel and yourself at all times which is much appreciated! and your literally always smiling and doing something fun... love the creativity and the true intent to share your passions and knowledge , youve helped me with so so much flipper zero stuff and when i can afford it ( i know its not expensive but im broke) ill be coming back to this video and the one about the pawnagotchi and doing exactly what you did, anyway thanks for always bringing us such good content and a good time in general man
Thanks! I appreciate you!
Nice work and explanation!
Very neat. There are so many different possibilities in making something similar.
Totally!
Impressive work. Keep it up!
Thanks a lot!
I love this.
Thanks!! I've really wanted to build this project for a WHILE, now I finally had a good enough excuse to make it!
::Á la Comic book Guy:: Best rasberry pi project ever!
Hey man, great vid! It'll be a while before i can build this, but like you, I'm excited to one day have this playing on a loop in minature. Like others mentioned; soo many possibilities for other projects!
I've done some model building and found a couple pairs of tweezers and forceps were really helpful when trying hold, manipulate, and glue small things down. I know ill need em for this project!
Keep it up, Toodily-do, neighbor!
Okily-Dokily, I appreciate you!
I WANT ONE !!!!... TAKE MY MONEY !!!!!
That looked a great project, I suppose you could 3D print a SpongeBob Divers helmet TV and add the same components to play SpongeBob videos.
Thank you for putting together this tutorial! Im also getting the same audio issue. Were you able to fix that?
This is nice, but it would be even better to recreate 'retro TV' from Irish Craic Party (taken off UA-cam), where you have it fed your media off your server, and you set up channels, schedules in those channels, channel numbers/logos, and put in year-appropriate 'filler' (aka commercials) for each channel, and then clicking channel up/down just flips through the channels like Tv from the 80s, and to top it off, channel 4 is an EPG like Continental Cablevision from the 1980s with the very low-res slow-scroll of programs for every half hour.
This is awesome! Does it play the episodes in order or does it randomly choose which one to play?
Thanks sas and @pcbway this looks fun...
It was a fun project!
Can you upscale this to a 28" TV? I would like to recreate my old cabinet-size TV that sat on the floor and if this had potentiometers, then I can recreate the turn volume knob (and hopefully pull on power?).
Could you go about making a larger version of this? What would be the pros and cons and would the steps in this video be changed at all?(besides the larger TV case)
Good job, man! How much is a Raspberry Pi Zero nowadays? Used to be so cheap just a handful of years ago...
Can i just buy the unit? I don't have a 3d printer of the equipment to put it together.
Hello i'm new to this stuff. Can i ask why i need an amp for the speaker. Any idea without an amo?
How much does the 3d printed bezel cut from the screen? I'm loading an anime with subtitles onto mine and want to make sure they are mostly readable
is it ok to use different screen because I cant find this one so I want to buy different
Looking to do usbc instead of micro, shouldn’t be an issue right?
Hi thanks for this! i managed to get through everything, but my pi turns on, then once OMXplayer has booted the screen goes completly black. im using a 3.5inch waveshare screen as opposed to the 2.8
Does the screen show text?
Hello Jordan. Working on this project and having the same issue. Did you ever solve it? I get the little blinking cursor on bootup but then it goes dark.
Thinking about switching video players away from one video out of desperation
@@afty_ The same thing is happening to me. I only get a black screen with a curser and then it goes completely dark. Ive gotten to the point where i can get audio to play but no video. I've reimaged it and started over multiple times. I always see all the text/code with the raspberry logo when i first plug in the freshly imaged micro sd card, until I make all the changes, and then on reboot it does the blank screen thing. i cant figure it out!
Can I use a rpi 3 for this project? I have a 10in hdmi LCD that I want to use instead.
Oh definitely, it would be a completely different build but that hardware would do that no problem
So where can I get the files from?
Im Up to the Part where i need to make a blank SSH txt document
The IP address never shows up
After it loads it asks me for a password i copy and paste my command to terminal but it doesnt fo anything when i mount my SD card to my computer the SSH file i made is GONE please Help
DOH!
Hey, loved the video! How hard do you think this would be to accomplish for someone who has no experience in programming or projects like this? I would love to make this for my girlfriend but lacking confidence to commit incase i fail. Thanks :)
Did you try?
@@bigstan5705just finished it today, I found it very challenging but so rewarding just to say I didn't give up, even though I was close many times. I couldn't of done it without this video though that's for sure.
I was wondering how many episodes does it play and how many seasons of the show is there on it 🤷🏼♀️❓🤷🏻♀️
All of them
Did you ever figure out the distorted audio? I just put the audio circuit together and I'm having the exact same issue.
Oh wow that's interesting! I thought it was just me. I was trying to increase the volume on the player itself but couldn't figure it out through SSH
@@TalkingSasquach Might just not be able to drive the speaker that loud. I turned the volume down on the amp and it went away. Just a little quieter than I would like.
Also if you want to try setting volume in omxplayer to max you could probably put the --vol 100 flag into the player code below.
playProcess = Popen(['omxplayer', '--no-osd', '--aspect-mode', 'fill', video])
I had the same issue with the interference and distorted audio as well. I even got a new amp and replaced it and it was still happening. It turned out to be the small screw on the amp. I initially used a very small bit (PH000) to turn the screw but it must have been too small and didn't turn it at all. I used a larger bit (PH1) and the screw turned, the volume increased and the distortion went away. In your video, when you turned the screw, you said "I think that's turning," but I don't think it actually was as the screw initially has a noticeable resistance and won't turn as quickly as it appeared to in your video. I would recommend plugging the TV in and with an episode playing, turn the screw on the amp with a larger bit and see if the distortion goes away when the volume increases. @@TalkingSasquach
@@davidcy trying this when i get home!! Thanks !
Hey so I had it working perfectly. but my ssh became non op for some reason so. I had to start from scratch now I can't get videos to load at all! after doing all the coding and rebooting the screen just says
"Raspbian GMU/Linux 10 skyler TTY1
skyler login:_ "
Then it just sits there. The files won't play anymore. help?? (skyler is what I changed my raspberry pi to.)
are you sure you have video files loaded into /home/pi/simpsonstv/videos ? join the discord if you're still having issues, easier to help than UA-cam. I literally just spent 2 days building a new one and i had nothing but problems, turned out my RPi was just being sketchy
Hello, I was following the Brandon´s tutorial, everything was ok, but when i turn on to check the video playing it stays on log in screen, any help, please?
Are you positive it has Internet and you were able to clone everything? Also you will need video files for it to play anything
@@TalkingSasquach I think it was the encoding of the videos. Also i could not connect on filezilla, instead of root I put pi on the user. just in case.
Hi, me again, now i'm trying to make the tutorial but with a 3.5 screen gpio of 26pin but i´m stuck with the drivers part.
@@eliutrodriguez4634did you ever figure this out? Also was if ok using pi as username on filezilla?
Im confused. How can you fit all the simpsons episodes onto a 64 GB sd card as in the tutorial? Seems like that woud be 100s of GBs?
@@austingappa1605 keep in mind the resolution of this screen, all my videos are low resolution
You got a link for the flux please?

@@TalkingSasquach thanks love this project! gonna do it asap!! ❤continue like that please 🙏
Talking Sasquach it would be better if you added all the parts that you used the link so we can buy it and use the same process as your build just like in the video. somebody that want to follow the video cant duet cause all the parts that you have you didnt even put a link to it.
This is my ADHD irl 🤣
Did you ever figure out the interference? I just ran into the same issue
Turn the screw on the amplifier like halfway down, then see if it sounds better with the volume knob higher
First
You lost me at Nano.. really glossed over that part man... and the episodes.. I cant find them.
bro sell em please!!!
THE SIIIIIIIIIIIMPSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONS!!!! 😀
Can I place order for a real 6" COLOR CRT TV to make the same "The Simpsons" TV my friend?
I wish. If I could get a real 6" CRT that could work with the Raspberry Pi, I'd do it immediately!
@@TalkingSasquach Can we talking about it in private dear Squach? 🤗
