  • As a subject, The Alamo probably represents the best of the west. Men and women with honor, courage and sacrifice against the odds.
Few place names evoke more emotion. Somehow touches you to your core. So much at steak against incredible odds. With a list of characters that was a who's who of heroes of the time. Davy Crockett, William Barret Travis, and James Bowie holding off the Mexican forces.
Let's delve into these wonderful movies today. Let me know what you think in the comments.

For those that complain about historical accuracy, all I'll say is be thankful anyone, John Wayne or others, cared enough to actually tell the story. Name a modern actor or director that isn't a senior citizen today in 2023 that would. In my opinion, if they captured the spirit of The Alamo battle, then they've succeeded. Movies are, as a whole, meant to be escapist entertainment, with perhaps a message if you aim for it. If you're looking for a history lesson, there's plenty of great literature on the subject. This is just my opinion.

As long it's not the ONLY way to learn about the actual historical incident, which it isn't, there's nothing wrong with presenting it as mythology as Wayne did. It's marvelous entertainment and I don't watch it expecting a documentary.

To me The Alamo (1960) is still the best version of telling the story. It gives up a lot of historical accuracy replacing it by a story of heroism, self-sacrifice, and a fight for freedom. It inspired the stories and legends of the siege of The Alamo better than any other film. It is still a great film to watch today. And Dimitri Tiomkin's musical score is the best ever done for an Alamo movie. Kudos to John Wayne for seeing that this film was made.

Do you know how Dimitri Tiomkin became the composer of "The Alamo's" musical score? John Wayne wanted to use the Kingston Trio's song about the Alamo as the theme song for the movie, but the Kingston Trio refused. I'm glad they did. The Kingston Trio's song about the Alamo wasn't very good. Dimitri Tiomkin's score was monumental.

For me the best has to be the 1960 version , John Wayne put his Heart & soul in to Making the Movie , sure its not Historicaly Accuret but does it gives us a film where by the end we care about every one of them as we see each one Fall , from Travis , Dickenson & Beekeeper on the wall , Butler Bonham in the court yard , Crocket at the Magazine & Bowie in his bed , Knife in hand , this is how Heroes Die , the fight Scenes Are Amazing & the musical score by Dimitri Tiomkin is a True movie Classic , at age 64 I have seen this film numerous times and will no doubt watch it again as it it is a true screen Classic..

The latest version is by far the most accurate as far as my own "deep dive" into the Texas Revolution a few years back. The Mexican's final assault goes in at dawn ad Crockett is executed after capture. I've also seen the 55 and 0 versions several times. One of my first toy collections was the Marx Alamo play set with the tin mission. tan/brown defenders and light blue Mexicans. It was stormed several times and brought some relief to mom as it gave her something to distract me.

Great video and some interesting comments. Even though I have not seen it I am not surprised D.W. Griffith's version of the Alamo is filled with racial undertones. Griffith was such a racist that in 'Birth of a Nation' there is a scene were a black soldier had to touch a white women. Rather than use one of the black cast members for the scene he used a white actor in black face.

Until the fess parker movie, most depictions of the death of Davy Crockett told the story of how he was captured, and he, and half a dozen other prisoners were executed by firing squad
It seems, however, that the first Parker movie actually influenced historians and if you look at Walter Lords book, a time to stand, he claims that Crockett died fighting

Did Crockett die in battle or by execution? In "A Time to Stand," Lord wrote, in response to the query Did David Crockett Surrender? that "it's just possible that he did." He then cites some sources that claim so. But Lord also admitted the opposite, that "there's a good chance Crockett lived up to his legend, and in some circles it remains dangerous even to question the matter."

Geez man, would it kill you to put a SPOILER tag on your videos? Yes, we might all know the outcome of the original historic ALAMO battle, but you don't need to reveal how every movie about the battle ends. What's the point in watching VIVA MAX now that you've spoiled the entire plotline, which certainly wasn't necessary for THIS video. Come on, man, spoiler tag your videos when you so cavalierly report the endings or other significant plot points. Thanks.
