    Love your boy's reaction. My first hen just started laying. Its so cool to feel an egg so fresh its still warm. Really reconnects you with your food.

      I so agree. There is just something rewarding about growing and harvesting our own food. It makes it taste better for sure. Congratulations on your first eggs!

    hahaha roosters just know the worst time to let you know they are there lol this video is full of exactly what I've been waiting to see! I have a coop and wondered why I can't do exactly what you are. I've been throwing everything in for them to compost and am very excited that all i have to do is move the top over and get the black goodness below! Thank you for sharing!

    Question: Is there anything you DON’T put in with the chickens to compost?

    • @EsthersEden
      @EsthersEden  5 місяців тому +1

      Great question! Yes! I do not put in rhubarb leaves or horseradish leaves. I use these as chop and drop mulch around fruit trees instead. These plants can be toxic to animals so I haven't' wanted to risk it...

    So funny, I had an evil rooster before, he was so mean and attacked me everyday. Lets just say, he didnt win that last fight. Loving this video!

    My compost has maggots in it, is that a bad thing and can chickens eat maggots safely?

    • @EsthersEden
      @EsthersEden  3 місяці тому

      Depending on what you put into your compost pile maggots are completely normal part of the decomposition process. Things like meat and dairy products attract flys; which lay the maggots - maggots are flys eggs.
      As far as safety for the chickens. Oh yes. They will go crazy over the maggots. They love them. Excellent source of protein for the chickens.
      Happy composting!

    My guys are working on a new chicken coop! How do you estimate the space needed for compost making? We chose as flat a space as possible but i think its too small for my growing garden. I may need to take over a bit of Lauren's sunflower garden next to it as we add more critters.
    Great job with the video, Maggie!! ❤

      How exciting! Well they don't need a huge amount of space. It's more about calculating how much materials you will be adding to the run for them to compost for you. I could get away with half of the space I have now, but I wanted my hens to have plenty of room... and to be able to use the pen for larger animals. It's roughly 8 feet wide and 30 feet long including the coop. Hope that helps.
