    How cold are your winters that these plants survive in with no heat?

    • @EsthersEden
      @EsthersEden 25 днів тому

      Last winter we hit -24 degrees F and had below 0 for an extended period. This is fairly typical of our winters. These plants do survive without heat... they do not grow when it is this cold and you can only harvest them when they are thawed. A wonderful book on the subject is four-season harvest by Eliot Coleman

    What is your interval for harvesting the compost? Do you apply it to the garden each fall? The side walls are important for windy areas

    • @EsthersEden
      @EsthersEden 26 днів тому

      I harvest compost as needed, but usually do the biggest haul in the autumn when I prepare the garden for spring planting. I add 1-3 inches of fresh compost to the beds in the fall. The walls are just there because we had pigs, we needed to keep them from seeing what was on the other side of their pen. Pigs go where they can see. My motto has been "use what you have available". We had the old roofing material on hand.

    i had my chickens running around the backyard for almost a year, they destroyed all my grass, seeds..etc. But the dirt with molded leaves ended up becoming soil that i used to grow tomatoes and okra plant. I did that as a test and it worked. My dad said those chickens are pooping everywhere and that soil should be good, so i started thinking to keep chickens in the run and just add stuff to it and have the chickens poop on things and i would eventually get the soil from the run and grow in it. I came on youtube to look for videos to confirm what i thought might work, glad to see so many videos actually

    Oh Esther, what can I say, God brought me to your channel, I wasn’t looking for you. I watched your video on homesteading alone. I have been asking God what He wants me to do? I have been feeling this pull to sell what I have and find a place to start anew but fear filled. I woke up this morning and there was your video( I leave my tv running all night, not a good thing I know but since my “D” it has been my pattern) I know God is saying, Elaine, look at her, she is doing this as a single parent with 2 young children. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your situation. You have no idea how many people you are helping or inspiring. God bless you dear one! I am sorry to hear about your "D" - I understand needing sound... you will see what I mean in a video coming up very soon. I too have coping tools. They are for a season. @@EsthersEden I have to apologize, you have 3 kiddos and I wrote 2. My “d” was dropped on me in May 2020, the midst of Covid. We had 34 years together 32 married. I knew in my spiny senses that something was off. In my situation, “D” is worse that death, because the significant other is still alive and doesn’t want you in their’s anymore. The blessing for me is that this event brought me back to God. I had gone prodigal because my husband was not willing to share his belief of God with me, among other things, and this made me doubt everything. The tragedy is I loved this person and still do.

    • @EsthersEden
      @EsthersEden Місяць тому

      no need to apologize. 😉 While I have not experienced the death of a spouse I have watched someone very close to me experience it. The main difference seems to be closure. I try not to compare though because hard is hard... It is beautiful how God welcomes us back with open arms and understanding. One day at a time. You will heal. I will be praying for you.

    I understand the tiredness. Basically being exhausted and becoming a robot, just going through the motions because you 'have to' you don't give yourself the option to rest, because this and this and this need to be done. I'm struggling with that right now. I see a meme on Facebook every so often that reads: " I want to build a life that I don't need a vacation from" if you work on it to the point where you're constantly tired, you're working way too hard and not enjoying anything. I hope you get to build that life that you don't need a vacation from

    • @EsthersEden
      @EsthersEden 2 місяці тому

      Thank you so much for sharing your struggles here and the encouraging words. I have also read that meme and I have worked hard to build such a life... and I'd say in many ways I succeeded. Life changed and now we are challenged to rebuild and readjust and find the place where we enjoy life again. I think the grieving process takes a long time when going through something like we have. The best advice that was given me was: it's okay to take time to feel the things you feel. You don't have to get over it before you are ready. I think perhaps a better aim at least for us is to find joy in all circumstances and be content despite the circumstances. Blessings to you on your own journey.

    When things get crazy for me are usually find I’m trying to put too much on my plate so I refocus take a critical look at what I’m doing and try to narrow my focus. I look at the things that benefit me and my family, the most, and the time involved in making them happen, so I’m looking for things in the garden that are going to be most productive with the least amount of work and get rid of anything that isn’t same thing with the animals. Look at the animals that provide the most benefit and the most production with the least amount of work and start trimming off the things that don’t provide the mostproduction and benefit and take more time and narrow your focus

    It was great to meet you at the MHC! I came back to Western WA to a nasty fight with C*vid 😳 Not sure what all you're referencing (the video a year back) because until we met last weekend, I didn't know you did UA-cam. I once had a channel about this size. I found the time consumption to make good videos completely overtook what I was good at-writing action novels. So I shut it down entirely. I fell for the "multiple income streams" trap. You're probably figuring out what I did-there's no such thing as a passive income stream. It all takes a lot of work! And that takes time from something else. Hang in there, my young friend! 👊🏻 - Pat/"Austin Chambers"

    My goodness yes, I've been wondering where you've been. Public schools are not the answer. I lived for 7 years with $0 income. When I knew no one was going to hire me ever again, I was curled up in a ball on the floor, having lost all hope. Very afraid. But about mid-way in that 7 years, I thought "wow, how am I still here?". Miraculously, day by day God gets you through it. Had to go on food stamps and with the $20 a month I got from my son was able to at least have toothpaste and bathroom tissue. Had a roof over my head through a homeless Veterans program. Buying bedsheets at Goodwill for 50¢ a piece to make my dresses. My oldest sister died in February and when trying to contact my cousin to tell him, I found out he had died in July of 2022. And my son's father who was helping me build a fence and arbor died "unexpectedly" a few weeks ago. I was waiting to hear from him to work another day on the fence when the Coroner came by the house looking for my son since he's Mark's "next-of-kin". I still can't believe he won't ever be coming back.😢 Focus on your family. They're ALL that matters in life.

Remote viewers, a true psychic (a German that's been giving Edgar Cayce like health advice since he was 11), and even Clif "Woo-Woo" High. Maybe the world's gonna blow up and we won't have any more worries. They also said it could be a GOOD big event but what are the odds of that in today's world? My goodness your poppies (I think that's what the fushia and orange flowers are?) are gorgeous. Thank you for sharing the real parts of life - life can be really tough sometimes and yes - especially in the season of having little loves around us. I hear you! (a stranger on the internet I know - but I wanted to reach out and say yes, you are not the only person and the raw realness is what is so sublime and beautiful - all of it is life.) Here's to the rebuild and rest.

      Thank you so much for your comment. You are correct, the orange are California poppy and the pink are Icelandic poppy. (I have zillions of seeds happy to share) Embracing the challenging seasons is difficult but sometimes that ends up being the most beautiful part. Cheers!

      My family is from England - Ipswich. We are always trying to find a genuine English hard cider here... it's a challenge. Fire Cider is nothing like it. It's a non alcoholic strong concoction made with herbs and vinegar and honey. It is great for warming the body in the winter months and assisting the body in healing from colds and things.

    Hopefully the corn trick works for you. I live in zone 3a and found "orchard baby" corn works really well in my cold area. 65 days to harvest and grows about 3 feet tall. Only disadvantage is the cobs are about 6" but REALLY sweet. Good luck!

    My compost has maggots in it, is that a bad thing and can chickens eat maggots safely?

    • @EsthersEden
      @EsthersEden 3 місяці тому

      Depending on what you put into your compost pile maggots are completely normal part of the decomposition process. Things like meat and dairy products attract flys; which lay the maggots - maggots are flys eggs. As far as safety for the chickens. Oh yes. They will go crazy over the maggots. They love them. Excellent source of protein for the chickens. Happy composting!

The area we are looking at living is around 3,000 ft. I have only every gardened around 1000 ft. elevation. I'm in Idaho too. What's the new planting zone going to be? I'm in Boise and we're at 2700', zone 7a, so WHERE you'll be in Idaho at 3,000' makes a big difference.

    • @ashleypnw6922
      @ashleypnw6922 3 місяці тому

      @@lesliekendall5668 I'm use to zone 8a. Our new zone will be 6b. Considering Idaho's highest is in the 7s. I think we will actually be in a really nice growing zone. And seeing how well Esther is doing in Zone 4. I feel very encouraged!

    • @lesliekendall5668
      @lesliekendall5668 3 місяці тому

      @@ashleypnw6922 I guess what I poorly said was the planting zone only tells you how cold a perennial plant can survive. You could be in a 6b that has a long growing season or a 6b that stays cold(ish) most of the year. It's important to look at the spring, summer, fall temps and their duration at the place you relocate to. An example is if the soil doesn't get 70° and above, the squashes won't germinate. And cooler summers means having to do indoor starts with the shortest "sowing to harvest days" plant varieties. Just something to consider.
