Custom Address Sign with Backlight // How-To // Woodworking

- This project is a great way to step up curb appeal outside your home while showing off your woodworking skills to the entire neighborhood. A simple wooden sign is backlit using a new LED floodlight behind a piece of white acrylic; the sign acts as an address sign during the day and an illuminated accent piece during the dark hours. Use this next to the garage door or even next to the front door - the project build will be the same and the results will speak for themselves. Overall, this really is not an expensive project to complete. Wood panels, glue, reinforcing screws, stain, silicone, and plexiglass are the main materials you need to make the sign. And you can see the anchors that I used in the video for my particular application.
More insights on this project at my website below, but here's a couple quick comments:
1. I used Poplar for this sign. It was available at my local home center and required little planing/face jointing on my part for the project. So for the convenience and the extra price, it was the best choice for me.
2. You can create this same effect without a light behind the sign and it would still show well during the day. An alternative for lighting at night would be to use a spot light on the sign to show it off (maybe one that is already installed at your location).
3. I wanted to work on my router skills so that is why I ultimately ended up using the router to carve the letters out from the wood.
I'd like to give updates on the sign so you can see how it's holding up to the elements. Leave a comment on my UA-cam video page to let me know if you'd like me to provide that status.
Hopefully this gives you some insight on how to create one of these for yourself. Please like and subscribe to the UA-cam channel and share the video with your friends. Every little like and share helps keep me in the shop.

Absolutely gorgeous 🤩❤
It is SO NICE to see someone else make mistakes. Great video
Genius! I can cover over my existing hideous colonial style light!!
Well done! Simple and effective yet still looks very classy. With all these Amazon packages coming into the evening I need to make one.
Glad it was helpful!
Very beautiful! compliments!!!
Thank you, much appreciated!
WOW That looks so good. Thanks for the video.
Thank you!
Well done video; final product looks great!
Thank you!
Love your honesty and that you showed your errors and how you corrected them
Keep up the great work
Appreciate it :) Thank you
Awesome video. I think that shop deserves a pocket hole jig vs gluing the end grains on something exposed to rain. This has inspired my project - thanks.
Agreed on that - it's help up pretty well so far. The next iteration is going to be something more substantial like mahogany or teak. Or even metal. Haven't decided yet. But it's amazing how many people comment positively on that thing, even the pizza delivery folks. Glad it inspired you!
increible como lo hiciste sin maquinas , grandes ideas , saludos desde ecuador.
you have a good job👍👏
Great job 👏
Thank you! 😃
Love this!!!
Thank you!
Great video and your design is brilliant. They charge a fortune for these.
Agree - This was close to $50 in raw material cost, just takes some time and patience to complete. Thanks for your comment!
Thanks for sharing this. Great work 👍
awesome build, from the video it seems the light is proper on the IV and low om the F and E of five.... i would switch from a single head light to two lights or a wider light to cover more area behind so all the letters get even lighting...
It is a little off center, but it does even out at night - the video wasn’t really showing the even glow. Thanks for your comment!
This sign turned out great. You do nice work. A CNC would be helpful
Thanks, I appreciate the comment! And YES, CNC someday...
excellent design i like it a lot
Sweet
Five seconds in -> smashed subscribe!
Much appreciated, thank you!
Dope
Was hoping you would show how it looks in the night.
It was hard to photograph at night because of the high contrast of light vs. no light - but it illuminates well. That ending shot shows it coming on around dusk. It shows well from the street for food delivery drivers.
Not bad, But with two lights from Both side you will got a smother light, or in this case you Can use led strip also...
Hi! What type of wood did you choose for this projet? And did it hold up well outside? Thank you:)
Think it was poplar - if you go about something like this, look for a wood which will hold up to elements better like teak or cedar. This was a good proof of concept but I'd love to remake it something more suited to outdoor elements.
This is great but who’s address number is just 5?
For those interested, there are individual floating numbers with led backlit that offers a slick and chic look
How would you make one that says FOUR ? Glue?
Maybe a font that has those inner shapes connected to the main structure so you don't have to rely on glue. Or find a stylized way to show those letters with less negative space, more structure included. An approach like a simple circle for the letter "o". Know what I mean?
👍🏽
cool but a quick pocket holeand you wont have those screws in the front
Why didn’t you consider using a jigsaw to cut this?
I wanted to avoid the jagged edge that could result from the saw blade. Definitely could have used one, and then sanded/eased the letter edges down to get it nice and clean. But I really like the crisp edge the router bit created on the letters. And - honestly - I wanted to get better at using the router in this fashion - like a carving tool.
ok so do you make custom signs
Sure!
.....Jigsaw perhaps?
Absolutely. Put it against a fence to ensure a nice straight edge, but certainly would work.
What ya gonna do. Just do a letter a day

Not logical, house numbers are in digits not alphabets. For example mine is 46890
You can definitely carve individual numbers as well
buy a cnc lol
Why not a jig saw. Duhhh
Looks nice, but not as bright as I would have thought.
It shows up better in real life vs. on film. Does the job :)
