Love when Martin gets deep in the weeds on the technical part of racing. This is why he was so good not just because he could drive but because he knew how it all worked too.
I wish I appreciated Martin in my childhood the way I do now. I watched him race a lot of races and he was always solid (I’d say “in his prime” but I think his entire racing career he was in his prime) cheers Mark Martin 🍻
@@calvins1837 Ya, today’s generation thinks in terms of ‘upgrade’ like just going and buying a new phone. They don’t understand the science and mechanics of race cars and basically think if you spend enough money you can be a top driver… Of course Nascar hasn’t helped with the latest ‘cup car’ iteration that has basically banished innovation and given the teams a manufactured product to buy and drive. It’s a mentality that goes beyond the current generation.
Agreed. Thankfully, we've gotten to hear a lot of the general bio stuff in these interviews on various podcasts, but always am left wanting to hear more stories from these retired racers (drivers, owners, crew chiefs, etc). Mark's podcast where he tells his racing career year by year is great.
How was this two hours?! Felt like 45 minutes. These two guys might be the most humble, kind, appreciative, genuine, and thoughtful "celebrities" I've ever seen. This is what life appreciation looks like.
In the early 90s, my partner (David R. Smith - druver) and I bought a NASCAR Sportsman car to race. We were at a practice session in Charlotte for us to try our car out, and for NASCAR to OK us to race. It was a Saturday morning, and we were unloading. Mark drove in the pits in his pickup, stopped at our pits and spent an hour or more with us helping us get up to speed. What a great guy and humble gentleman.... and one of the best in the business.
Long story short, When I first started interest in Nascar, my first fav driver was Davey Allison. When he passed away I became a fan of Alan Kuiwicki. After his demise, I was afraid to root for anyone. Eventually I became a Mark Martin fan, and have been ever since.
So you're a Ford man like I was growing up pulled for Awesome Bill, and then my favorite became Davey as well I was heartbroken when he and Kulwicki died just months apart but I as well on the side a Roush and Mark Martin fan because of the IMSA and ASA connection so trust I totally get it
I'm a Ford guy but if I'm honest I wish he had left Roush and went to Hendricks before he retired the first time. I think the car of tomorrow is perfect for him.
My favorite driver of all time. I lived and breathed everything Mark Martin. Once he retired I stopped watching NASCAR. I have over 3,000 individual cards, 300 + diecast and countless other memorabilia. I watched every practice, qualifying, race, trucks, Busch, IROC etc.
You should still watch Nascar, support it or it goes away. Just saying! I've been watching Nascar since the mid 80s, I understand the changes haven't been great over the 20 year's. But I want future generations to be able to experience going to a Nascar race.
Same, I watched a few races after mark retired, but very few. I watch a few highlights now and then. When mark drove regularly I knew every driver, sponsor, car owner, all that. Now I dont even know half the drivers the only ones I know is the ones that still race or where talked about as up and comers then. I watch this on and off if the guest interests me.
Mark - Hurry up and finish your book!! 😄😄 And make sure there's an audio version, I need you telling me ALL the stories ASAP!! 💛💛 Jr - Thank you so much for bringing Mark to us - this is exactly what I (and probably many others) needed today. 💛💛
I am so glad you were able to have this conversation with Mark. I always had respect for the man but now it is “mad” respect. Especially his memory, WOW!
Jr understands Mark Martin had a lot of fans! Those were among my son's first words. Maaak Maaatin in his little baby voice! I used to take them camping infield for all nearby weekend race activities.
Jr unless you have listened to Mark's podcast you have no idea how good his memory is, it has to be the best memory I've ever seen, u can ask Mark about a race in the middle of 1980 and he will remember the set up and spring and things on that car. Love u Mark Martin
WHAT A GREAT INTERVIEW. It's really good to have the experienced Racer as the interviewer, after doing the proper homework to ask the right questions... and then let your guest talk.
I agree. I didn't understand JR's interview style at first, but now I believe it's the best way to do these long form interviews. Just kinda make a statement or ask a leading question and the interviewee just open up and steers the conversation. A lot better than interrupting all the time or the ones who argue with them about things they weren't there for.
What an awesome conversation! I started watching Nascar in 1984, man this brings back some memories. Mark Martin is a true legend who raced in the greatest generation of Nascar, in my humble opinion. Thank you Mr. Dale Jr for this great conversation 👍
I was, still am and always will be a big Mark Martin fan! Just a GREAT guy and always raced clean. Thank you and Mark for doing this. I have both your books and can not wait to read your new one Mark!
Ya know, Dale... You could always do a full season of interviews, where you ask all the questions you didn't get to ask the first time. I've seen damn near every guest you've had on this show, and I don't think there is a single one, that it would break my heart if you had back. Two hours isn't enough. Some "where are they now" episodes or "part deux" might be cool. (Plus, Mark's a story teller. He likes to talk. We love to listen 😁)
Mark sets the bar high!! Love his ability to tell the details and recall so much about not just the cars but the emotions he felt during that time as well. Thanks for sharing with us!!
Love this interview. Sad to see it just happening now and not sooner. My father (who was the biggest Mark Martin fan) wanted this interview to happen so bad. He passed away on 12/28 and sadly did not get to see it. Either way, thanks Dale and Mark!!!
Was wearing my Mark Martin 4-in a row T-Shirt today and came across this. When Mark retired Kyle Larson, my neighbor, stepped up. NASCAR is a continuous blast. This year I’ll go to Michigan race for another new track. Trying to see them all at least once.
I love this show. Mark came to New Smyrna a lot. I saw him on the trailer for Jack Cook (I an pretty sure it was Jacks) one night and was so star struck. Years later I sat next to him watching his son Matt run a truck. I just said hi. Same thing when Irvan comes or when Harrison Burton ran and his dad was there. I want to fanboy so bad and get a pic but you should respect these legends and let them enjoy their kids. I don’t need a pic to remember I got to say hello to some guys I’ve admired for many years. My parents worked for Gary Balough so I got to see a lot.
I was the same way, but was thinking, were there any fans that didn’t like Mark? There are very few drivers like him, where he was pretty much universally liked by everyone.
Growing up I didnt cheer for Mark, was raised in a Chevy/Earnhardt household. It was truly a great episode to listen to him talk shop and I can say I have even more respect for who he is as person and was as a driver. Great episode!
Great hearing the 3 spring story. I used to go to Sharon Speedway in Hartford Ohio. Blaney's track now and it was a 1/2 mile asphalt. But I got to see Junior Hanley set a new track record almost every week.😊
Mark Martin Winn-Dixie car could just about cover the field every week in the Busch Series. There were times I enjoyed watching him race even though I pulled for Dale Earnhardt I love to watch Mark Martin race. He was very good.
Great show! Have been a fan of Mark Martin since the beginning . I’ve watched NASCAR since the early 80’ s. What you didn’t ask him this time gives you a reason to have him back.
I always loved Mark Martin as a Driver and this interview helped us see another side of this Hall of Fame Driver. Great stories and I was mesmerized by the interview. Thanks, Dale and Mark!!!
Mark Martin class act and a legend in NASCAR and IROC Series. My favorite race car driver and like JR51. Looking forward to your new book and your autographed Diecast models. ! I can't wait! Thank you Mark for all the memories! All the best in your retirement. Always looking forward to your interviews with everyone especially with Dale Jr. Best interview. I respect you as a race car driver. 🏁🏁🏁🏁❤💙💛🧡
Been a Mark Martin and Roush Racing fan since I was a kid. I wish so badly that your dad was still with us. He would have been awesome to see him having these conversations with his old Racing colleagues. Keep up the great work Dale.
Hello Dale and Mark great interview. I have been a long time Mark Martin fan since he came into nascar. I remember that Sonoma race Mark was talking about because I was there at the track watching the race.
Mark Martin is my all time favorite racing personality and that Folger's car is one of my favs! I could listen to his stories over and over. ASA and Clash vids in E Sr.'s basement...that is frickin epic!
Mark Martin is a human computer. Dude is sharp as a tack and has the best memory of anyone I've ever seen. The way he can just rattle off those setups from 30 or 40 years ago just like he was reading them off a damn setup sheet is amazing. I could listen to him talk about racing all day long.
That was an absolute treat! Thank you Dale and Mark for an extended conversation. I always enjoyed watching Mark race and the stories are even better. In fact the stories just confirm why I was always rooting for Mark to win. I hope we get another conversation soon and can't wait to read that book. Well done Dale, thank you for this!
Martin was/is my all time favorite NASCAR racer of all time. I saw him several times, but watching him take the pole then the win at Sonoma was a thrill. Another memorable one was when the "road" guy stole one at Martinsville. Speaking to him was always chill. Shirley Muldowney ( who remembered my son from the first time we met/talked! ), Bob Glidden who was always a great chat as was his son, and Mark are my all-time ambassadors of their sport. I'm under no illusion he would recall me but he was incredibly kind with his time to a young man who was a bit star struck :) Loved this interview.
I’ve listened to 2 Mark Martin pod casts now and I have to say you could have kept going for 8 more hours and I would have been right there. Mark is old school, it’s amazing what he remembers and the details involved. Mark is passionate about racing and he is and will always be one of my favorite racers. Thanks Jr.
Mark was always my guy back when,,,He reminded me always of the underdog with the patience and skills that it took to rise to the elite group,,,,,,,those were THE DAYS !!!!!!!!!
What a great interview! I was a Martin fan his entire Nascar career and still am to this day. I still search the vendor tents at the Cup races for Mark Martin Merchandise I don't have. One thing he said that really got me was how he said how him and Bentley Warren are best friends. Growing up 20 minutes from Oswego Speedway, Bentley was my man in the Supers. Can't wait for the next interview and the book!
While growing up, my family would watch nascar and I think that’s why I’m so into cars and racing. Mark Martin was always my mom’s favorite, so I always liked him as well, but Dale Jr was always my favorite driver. Now that I’m older, I respect Mark even more, knowing what he put into it and how clean he was on the track. Never was he the kind of person to make a dirty move, but he still did well. That’s the kind of driver I try to be while racing in iRacing. Thank you for getting him on the show. I love Mark and I’m always interested in his stories. I’m very excited for this episode. It’s the perfect video to watch after waking up to a bad dream lol
Jack came up through drag racing, where Jack and Wayne Gapp did literally everything! Micromanage, scared people are gonna steal from him was all he knew! Gapp/Roush 4door Mavericks were dominant in NHRA for several years! Mark is all class!
A great interview with Dale and Mark. Dale would make anyone feel comfortable and is very knowledgeable himself. My daughter is only 10 days older than Dale, and this year they celebrate the magic 5-0. Best of everything to you, Amy, and the girls. ❤ 🙏
Mark is my favorite driver of all time. He drove clean, didn’t whine and pitch fits and knew how the cars worked unlike so many guys now that know how to drive but just don’t know how the setups work. In fairness, most drivers in his day knew more about how the cars worked than most of the guys now. In my opinion, he’s the best driver to never win a championship and one of the reasons was that he wasn’t willing to drive dirty to get there. There were plenty of times that he could have taken out other guys and won championships but he was too honorable. On the other hand, Roush was also one of the reasons. Had he driven for Hendrick in his prime, he probably would have had a championship.
Dale I’m sitting here listening to mark talk. I’m in Kansas City Kansas alone I’m my house. The 70’s WAS THE BEST RACING SERIES EVER AROUND THE GOLDEN YEARS SO TO SPEAK. When he said Larry Phillips my ears perked up. Terry Phillips his son has never worked a job since he was a little boy he helped his dad and today TERRY PHILLIPS BUILDS OUTLAW LATE MODELS. Pick your drivetrain and he will put it in. Terry races Ford power plants. #75 Just like his dad. Now when Larry showed up at I-70 Raceway in Odessa Missouri the bets changed. Now we we’re betting on second place BECAUSE LARRY ALWAYS WON AT I-70 and I-44 in Springfield Missouri. Larry (GOD REST HIS SOUL) Should definitely be in the RACING HALL OF FAME FOR SURE. Hearing Mark talk about Larry took me back to my younger days and DALE ? YOU MADE THAT HAPPEN WITH DIRTY MO MEDIA SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THST DALE. It’s grows The Sport. Dick Trickle use to come to I-70 also. Jimmie Johnson and Andy Petty Raced there in 1999. TODAY ONE OF THE OWNERS OF HEARTLAND PARK IN TOPEKA BOUGHT I-70 AND LEVERKED IT FLAT, THEN STARTED OVER. They have a dirt track now and they will have Asphalt and a DRAG STRIP AR Dale, Son, do i miss those days. MARK KNOWS HE WAS THERE. Kyle Larson came to Kansas City Kansas to LAKESIDE SPEEDWAY and raced in SPRINT CARS. Kyle is like Larry HE WINS ALL THE TIME IN THE DIRT DALE, **Dirt is for racing, Asphalt is for getting there**
I'm a little younger than you are, but you sure took me down memory lane! I started watching racing as a kid at 11 in 76. I quit, except for a race here and there, when Mark Martin quit. Your way of describing everything just took me back to when I was a kid. Thanks for the smile.
Mr. Martin raced the way everybody should - he'd race hell out of you, but always with a level of respect so that he wouldn't take you out to beat you. There's a nobility, an honor to that. Folks would do well to approach most anything in this life in that mindset. Dude is pure class. - Ed on the Ridge
Mark was the man! I lived in the same community in Daytona as his family. I knew his son when we were 8-9 years old. We went to summer camp together. He bought my parents house when we moved away from Daytona. Nicest guy you'd ever meet.
Absolutely the best interview ever! He has been my favorite driver ever since the Stroh’s Light days. Such a humble and awesome man. I miss seeing him.
How could you not love two Class Acts remembering the memory's they have shared over the years. Both truly legions with so many fond memories... I've always enjoy listening two deep rooted Great Men that have meant so much to NASCAR can't wait for part 2...They both are the true hero's of the sport. Mark will always be # 1 to me!!!!
Thanks Dale & Mark for this interview . I've followed him since i was14 yrs old. I even road tripped to Darlington,SC from Sonoma just to see him race live on an oval track back in early 90's . Only thing missing was winning a championship . I think he could still do it today , but unlikely? Maybe 1 day Matt will drive ? Hope so ....Thanks MM # 60 ,6,5,01,8 for all the memories !! I've i stopped following Nascar since he retired.. Well almost .
I have missed not hearing Mark just talk. Such an iconic person. If there was a Busch race I expected Mark to win it. I just did not know how he got to where he got too and this said a lot about what I was curious about. Thank you for getting this interview out there.
It always make me smile when I hear Jr's humility, talking about being star struck by Terry or Mark, when his dad is IT, and now he is IT. But this is how 99% of people feel around Jr.
This legend got me hooked....watch Terry Labonte and another fellah in second place....crash coming out of turn 3 going into turn 4. Out of the smoke came Mark Martin in the Win Dixxie Thunderbird....blasting out of turn 4 to the checkered flag. First stock car race I ever went to...short track oval racing baby. RIR, great memories! Had a chance later in life to meet Mark Martin....what an extremely nice and soft spoken man....harder worker....hard to find these days!!
Mark was a wizard in setting up his cars, and a demon on the wheel. My favorite driver ever. I still remember the best story that proved why he was so good driving with his own setups (which in Cup were LOOSE). When was driving for Hendrick, he and Jeff Gordon swapped cars during practice, and Mark was super fast. Jeff got out of Mark's car and couldn't believe Mark could drive it like that, it was so loose he thought he was going to spin out in every turn.
Love when Martin gets deep in the weeds on the technical part of racing. This is why he was so good not just because he could drive but because he knew how it all worked too.
It’s the same reason that generation of drivers were good and fans could relate to them like the Wallace brothers for instance
@tritontransport 💯 it's lost on today's generation. Part of the reason I don't watch any more. But love these Jr interviews.
I wish I appreciated Martin in my childhood the way I do now. I watched him race a lot of races and he was always solid (I’d say “in his prime” but I think his entire racing career he was in his prime) cheers Mark Martin 🍻

Of course Nascar hasn’t helped with the latest ‘cup car’ iteration that has basically banished innovation and given the teams a manufactured product to buy and drive. It’s a mentality that goes beyond the current generation.

I truly believe your Dad had the only fan seat, with Mark Martin.
Mark was one of the cleanest drovers ever in NASCAR and as I said to Harry Gant The sport reall misses guys like you!
Greetings from another Arkansan. Mark Martin is the man.
When i was a kid Martin and Elliot were my favorite drivers. I hated it when they stopped racing full time . This show was awesome.
Geez, I could listen to him for hours.
Was wearing my Mark Martin 4-in a row T-Shirt today and came across this.
When Mark retired Kyle Larson, my neighbor, stepped up.
NASCAR is a continuous blast. This year I’ll go to Michigan race for another new track. Trying to see them all at least once.
Love Mark Martin, he was a great driver
Get him back Dale! It was awesome!
Jr., please get Jr. Hanley on!!! All of us old timers from the Midwest loved Mark and Jr. Hanley. Hanley cars were incredible machines!
Got that right, please get Jr. Hanley on… went to his shop and saw him kick ass racing and building awesome cars, a master of going faster!
Mark Martin has always been my favorite driver.
A true racer 's racer, love hearing his setup stories.

Great respect for Mark...total racer who drove to the front when he was fast...respected others when he wasn't...
Mark is a awesome guy.He is one of my favorites.
IMO this is the most honest, and deep down revealing interview ever!
This was just pure awesomeness 🫡🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
This show is awesome!!! I could listen to these stories all day!
Two great drivers and both good people!
Two hours was not nearly enough. Thank you!
Thank you sir, love the show with Mr. Mark, I know now how he won all the Bush races, thank you sir.
Love it, Mark is such a bad ass, my Dads favorite when I was growing up, we had such fun banter because Rusty was my favorite.

Mark Martin is a class act through and through. Top notch interview and definitely one of the top 5 in my opinion. 🏁🇺🇸🏁🇺🇸🏁🇺🇸
Loved the show!! I was glued to the TV for two hours!! Had to get on my phone to make a comment. Thank you Dale and Mark!!
Mark Martin was such a humble guy and one of the best nascar drivers period
Always one of my favorite drivers,Mark really deserved to get a championship. Two hours of my time well spent, looking forward to the next installment!
Appreciate the love!
I am half way through this podcast and I’m pretty sure this is the best one ever!!!!!!!!!!
This has been one of the best podcasts! You guys really jell together well.
Mark was always my favorite. In part, because he was from my backyard almost, but always professional and humble.
Mark Martin Winn-Dixie car could just about cover the field every week in the Busch Series. There were times I enjoyed watching him race even though I pulled for Dale Earnhardt I love to watch Mark Martin race. He was very good.

Always greet hearing from Mark - He had the coolest driving style
What a great interview! I was a Martin fan his entire Nascar career and still am to this day. I still search the vendor tents at the Cup races for Mark Martin Merchandise I don't have. One thing he said that really got me was how he said how him and Bentley Warren are best friends. Growing up 20 minutes from Oswego Speedway, Bentley was my man in the Supers. Can't wait for the next interview and the book!
Awesome interview! The love, respect, and joy was shining through! So humbling! 🙏💚
Dale, thank you for this interview. I didn’t realize the tough spots he was in, but he kept his head up and became one of the best.
I’m a huge 3 fan but have major respect for Mark Martin. He is the one driver other than Dale Sr that I would have liked to win a championship.
He was his double, literally 😎
YOU MADE THAT HAPPEN WITH DIRTY MO MEDIA
SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THST DALE. Kyle is like Larry HE WINS ALL THE TIME IN THE DIRT
DALE, **Dirt is for racing, Asphalt is for getting there**
I'm a little younger than you are, but you sure took me down memory lane! I started watching racing as a kid at 11 in 76. I quit, except for a race here and there, when Mark Martin quit.
Your way of describing everything just took me back to when I was a kid. Thanks for the smile.
Mr. Martin raced the way everybody should - he'd race hell out of you, but always with a level
of respect so that he wouldn't take you out to beat you.
There's a nobility, an honor to that. Folks would do well to approach most anything in this life
in that mindset. Dude is pure class.

Could listen to Mark's stories all day!
We could too!
Thank you for this, I could listen to him all day long
much respect for this man
I've never seen Mark so animated! Loved it.
You can make the next episode as long as you want. I’ve followed his career a long long time. Big fan.
Mark, welcome aboard! I was your fireman when ever you raced at Dover. You won some good races there.
Mark was the man! I lived in the same community in Daytona as his family. I knew his son when we were 8-9 years old. We went to summer camp together. He bought my parents house when we moved away from Daytona. Nicest guy you'd ever meet.
Thank you for having Mark Martin. I could listen to 6 more hours of that.
Don’t worry,Dale I’ll be waiting for the next podcast. Love your show enjoy listening what you had to say.😊
I have missed not hearing Mark just talk. Such an iconic person. If there was a Busch race I expected Mark to win it. I just did not know how he got to where he got too and this said a lot about what I was curious about. Thank you for getting this interview out there.
No Disappointments Dale great interview!
Mark Martin is a real racer! love this guy!
