  • Acclaimed Russian-American journalist Masha Gessen reveals the complex, strange and heart-wrenching truth of Jews in twentieth-century Russia that begins with pogroms and ends with emigration. Gessen’s latest book, Where the Jews Aren’t: The Sad and Absurd Story of Birobidzhan, Russia’s Jewish Autonomous Region, tells the true story of the region the Soviet Union declared a homeland for Jews in 1929, only to traumatize them and render them invisible in the late 1940s.

I just discovered her. Wow! I agree that it's not surprising that it has so few views either and it's truly a shame. I am watching all of all her videos here and eager to get my hands on anything she has written. She is absolutely fascinating and brilliant.

What are your thoughts on her view of the institution of marriage? As well as using gay marriage as a Trojan horse of sorts to upend and ultimately eradicate the entire institution of marriage

In a Post-Truth era, i'm not surprise that valuable video like this has less than 300 views while fake news and conspiracy theories attract millions.

Israel and it's diaspora advocated so strongly for homogeneity, walls and strong borders for israel. That's why I find it especially ironic that those who advocated so strongly for open borders, multiculturalism, & diversity for Western Nations are now not only being attacked in israel but are also being so fervently protested against by the middle easterners and others who they actively invited into Western nations.

Маша, спасибо, что Вы есть такая. :-) Мне довелось прочесть книгу Вашей бабушки Эстер Гессен "Белосток - Москва" - уже ребёнком Вы были бриллиантом.

7:44 " in July 1941 Nazi troops occupied Riga. Dubnow was evicted, losing his entire library. With thousands of Jews, he was transferred to the Riga ghetto. According to the few remaining survivors, Dubnow repeated to ghetto inhabitants: Yidn, shraybt un farshraybt (Yiddish: Jews”, write and record"). He was among thousands of Jews to be rounded up there for the Rumbula massacre. Too sick to travel to the forest, he was murdered in the city on 8 December 1941. Several friends then buried Simon Dubnow in the old cemetery of the Riga ghetto.[11]"
