Bellingham ghis year was pushing inside the box in pretty much every game. If u play him alongside rice u are going to have problems in the counterattack. Mainoo is the natural decision to play alongside rice. But i can see it working against teams like slovenia.
Southgate clearly wants to play a 4-2-3-1 at attack. He is either going to play the players that suit his system or crash out. He aint going to change his system to fit the players.

Oh yeah, by how the Premier League is arranged, the level and money there is in the league, England is gonna keep pumping out stars. The more popular and well funded football is at a country, the better players turn out. Look at Uruguay, you don't even need much population, it's mostly about popularity of the sport and/or funding. South america relies a lot on pure popularity, while Europe relies on a mix of both, England has the best funding in the world and very good popularity.

Foden simply can't play on improvisation. He works well in a cohesive system, but when he's got to think outside the box and act quickly, he can't do it, has to take about 5 touches when two would do

Foden is playing poor because Trippier is not a threat on the overlap, so the right sided defenders are happy to sit back and then surround Foden when he gets the ball which causes him majority of the time to cut inside or pass back into midfield. The guy has quality, but the support is not there for him. No one is making runs and drawing defenders off him.
Think I've seen Trip do one overlap the whole competition 😂

Foden's average position on the pitch over the last three games has been in the No10 spot. You can't overlap a player that isn't there!
And let's not forget Trippier is a RB by trade not a LB so it's not his natural position - a failure of Southgate not to take a back up LB by the way

What worked for England last world cup was Bellingham playing alongside Rice in mid. 1 szn at Madrid shouldn't change that. Foden and Palmer should not be made to play out of position while Jude plays at 10
Why didnt Southgate choose 3-3-4, and have Grealish as left wing, saka right wing, Kane 9. Then 2 CMs as Foden and Bellingham and Rise as CDM? Problems started already in squad selection and plan.

We missed opportunity in the last game to throw them all in and possibly rest kane and look at these other players. Kane is a 55/60 minutes max.

The issue is the left hand side of the pitch.we have no width from lb to lw. We either need to go to 3 at the back and use trip's as a left cb and then you use Gordon as a lw. Or you find a lb who will run past foden on the lw which trip's won't do personally I'd give gomez a go at that as he played it for liverpool and got forward. But for me the answer is Gordon on the left

LF: Bellingham(he’s playing as a false 9 for Madrid all year, by letting him drift off to the left and into the 10, u have 2 mavericks give them free Roam to do their thing while width is still provided)
ST: Kane(Kane dropping in isn’t as big an issue if you’ve Foden and Bellingham higher up and able to come inside when Kane drifts back)

Need Trent on for his beautiful deliveries, the issue is he doesn't have runners. The issue of the team is lack of cohesion between width and stretching the play. Trent at RB is better as he will roam forward, giving Saka more to play with. Anthony Gordon absolutely needs to be starting on left wing and he needs an overlapping LB. Bellingham as an 8, Rice as a 6, Palmer as the 10. That's your team.

19:20. Totally agree with this. You have to watch how Bellingham got his goals to know if that's going to work in the England team. Madrid's forwards float around. They create overloads and leave the 9 position vacated, so Bellingham could pop up in those places. That's not what is happening for England. The best true 10 on the team is Foden or Palmer. They should be central. Gordon on the left. Saka on the right.
Play Saka as a very attacking LB, with Walker forming 3 CB set up when Saka get advanced up the pitch, play Palmer RM, Gordon LM, Mainoo and Rice as a double pivot in CM, although I think Rice is not playing well. Bellingham and Foden as Two 10s behind Kane. As a Villa fan I would like to see Watkins given a game from 60 mins. Tell Kane run around like you are only playing for 60 mins. Play aggressive bold brand of football and score more than the oppos.

I think even players of this level look to a manager and ask for the marching orders. Theyre used to sytems, instructions, defined roles, plans and an specific amount of time and freedom. Southgate delivers nothing and im guessing they are privately thinking this bloke is useless! It shows on how confused they are on the pitch.
The Fault is the Manager and his set up because five players were out of position last night, the team should be Pickford the same back four then Gallagher or Gordon on the left Bellingham or Foden with Rice and Mainoo on the right with Kane supported with Saka , Watkins or Tony .
Southgate is defensive minded and won’t change his tactics because that’s all he knows, he got sacked from Middlesbrough because he did nothing.

This is not the first time Kane went missing in group stages. He didn't score a single goal last world cup's group stages. scored the second goal against Senegal (R16) and a penalty against France.
Euros 2020 again, went missing during group stages. scored against germany (R16) , Ukraine (Qtr), Denamark (Semi) - from a penalty.
So for the past 2 major tournaments, Kane scored in 3 games from open play.
Southgate did a decent job up until you lost the final against Italy but he should’ve been sacked after that. He shouldn’t even be at this tournament

Ok, I’m not a football technician, but I am aware that there is a very expensive and skilful bunch of guys out there, who generally play very well each week with their regular teammates, but their regular mates are all other international players representing other teams, so they are surely playing from different instructions which obviously don’t get the best out of their individual skills.
Just drop Foden for Gordon, stop having all these players that want to play the same position and have no width

The reason Saka isn't a threat is because he has no one to pass to in the middle once he beats a man, and he's getting doubled up on because Foden is on the left who isn't a threat, so the priority goes to Saka

1) I agree with True Geordie's take. Would make the same changes. But no way in Dante's extensive Inferno that Gareth does it.

3) But I also agree with the point the Arsenal fan is making that these players need to take on themselves to make something happen. Palmer and Gordon did that immediately, clearly, strongly. They should be playing a LOT more in the next game just based on those short appearances.

Shaw was such a mistake. What was wrong with Chilllwell, Rico Henry, MItchell or Hall? How did none of them get into the squad? Ridiculous. Also, seems every armchair expert can see that Bellingham should be moved next to Rice, Foden central, Gordon left. That way Kane has 2 runners each side of him, and Foden is in his best position. Then if they're not performing, its easy to bring Palmer on for Foden, Eze for Gordon, Watkins for Kane or Mainoo for Bellingham etc. All players playing in their natural positions instead of against Denmark when we had Foden left, Palmer right, players all over the damn place. Just play players in their natural positions!!!!
If Gordon plays then Kane doesn't drop as deep ro find ball. Bellingham alongside Rice, Foden as a ten and told to run beyond Kane.
Maybe swop our Left and Rightbacks over, gives us opportunity to sub Trent on as RB if we need to create more/need a goal. Trippier at LB doesn't work ESPECIALLY if Foden is LW
