  • I return to give everyone an update on what Disney's abandoned water park, River Country looks like as of 2017. Incredibly the pool area along with other parts of the park still can be seen from the parks former entrance area.

    Y'all have any idea how much money Disney would have if they just allow tours of the abandoned parks? This stuff is so interesting people love exploring their childhoods and things of the past it's a perfect money maker. 🤦🏽‍♀️😂

    Broke in there about an hour ago. At around 3AM December 27 2017. It was pretty easy getting into. But me and my friend had a lot of rock climbing to do to get back there. There was an opening behind a shed and we went on from there and walked around walking over branches and leaves everywhere. I was pretty scared because it was my first time going in an abandoned place like that. But it was pretty creepy too. Walked along the lazy river and saw a lot of other shit. We started hearing noises and saw poisonous spiders so we decided to leave. It was a cool experience though.

    So why don't they tear down River Country, instead of just putting up fences that tbh won't keep the more curious ones out.

      Alex McGhee maybe they are re-building river county

    • @BLasherman
      @BLasherman 7 років тому +80

      It's just they have plans for the land, but the cost of breaking it down is unnecessary at this time. They'll get to it only when they have to. The fence may be going up to hide construction going on there soon as well as to keep nosy people out.

      @Romejanic 7 років тому +38

      Also as Jake said, they are/were reusing the area of River Country that wasn't fenced off for some dinner party thing, so they're just putting fences up to keep people away from the abandoned section.

    Hi everyone- I live in Orlando and after seeing this video I wanted to check out river country (legally) for myself. I went to fort wilderness today, found the location, and they already have this pathway roped off. The farthest I got was the ticket booth. Please like this comment so others can see!

    Your River Country videos are the best group of videos to watch if you want to see how far you've truly come. The five-ish videos about the park all differ immensely in quality, with each increasing drastically as they get more recent. It's really interesting to see how much more effort you started putting into the more recent ones, and how young you were in the older ones.

    My thinking on the question you ask around 9:30 is because the buildings were close to the fence and easily seen in their decrepit state. You could see them if you were wandering around, waiting to enter the Hoop De Doo Review and, despite the desire to not have to put money into removing the majority of River Country, they also don't want guests gawking at things in disrepair. That's why largely, what remains are things that are easily hid behind the fencing they use (when folks haven't poked holes to look through that is). The taller structures, such as what you point out, aren't in such a state that they are obviously remains of something that was left abandoned. Unless you truly knew what you were looking at, you'd likely not even realize it was something man-made or, at the very least, something that's been sitting left abandoned as long as it has.

  • @DanicaRutland
    @DanicaRutland 6 років тому +11

    I saw it a year or two ago before they filled it with sand. I stood on one of the rocks to look over the fence. The rocks were still in one piece and the slides also didnt look worn down like that. Thats crazy how much different it looks in that amount of time.

    Ahhh, River Country. I was fortunate enough as a kid to have gone here once about a year or two before it was closed. reason for not demolishing certain thing can fall under. Not needing to spend the money for it right away might be the big one. could be they might be able to salvage certain things from it. maybe come up with a plan to reuse the structure. Or not ready to take it down until a plan is ready to be able to use the area for something.

      Also, Disney has let a lot of the people who did this back in. There's one girl who got banned after posting a video with her and her friends walking on the rotting wooden water slides that was let back in before even Adam's got reversed.
      I am pretty sure the reason Disney started banning people for this was the huge liability they had of not securing the site and then people popularizing it. It was a lawsuit waiting to happen and the fact that WDW did not erect fences after announcing the permanent closure in 2005 was really bad.

    @5:10 was indeed the towel rental window, as well as the men's, and women's locker rooms. @5:55 Yes, those were lights. The whole mountain was made the same way as the rocks. The buildings that were attached to the locker room were the admin offices, and attached to that was Pop's Cafe food concessions. Opposite that, I think you were looking at what used to be the souvenir kiosk, over on the picnic table side of the main walkway. @12:00 Yes on the loudspeakers. They were up on poles like the light pole you saw. Used for announcements, and to clear the water and beach when the storms rolled in.

    It would appear they filled in the Upstream Plunge pool due to Zika by filling it with dirt. Would it be a safe assumption that they leveled the building to get the dirt truck in?
    And I think they don't level a building unless it's falling in on itself or poses a threat to guests for other various reasons

    It was still running when I was last at WDW in 2000, but so overshadowed by Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach that my family never even went to it. Though I know there are many reasons it won't happen, I'd love to see River Country restored and reopened.

    Seeing all of this brings tears to my eyes. Especially the old promo video parts. It's so sad to see such an iconic and well known place get destroyed over the years. I never went there, but my parents said they used to go there all the time. I told them what had happened to it and they reacted the same way I did.
    Disney should make this a museum. Not tear it down. It's a piece of Disney history that needs to be remembered.

    Man, it's trippy, when you said 20 years ago it reminded me of my first time at Disney, it was in 2000 at the tail end of this place. I remember going to the pools with those dual slides, Slippery Slide Falls. I remember my cousins and I loved that water park. We spent an afternoon there. I remember it being a lot of fun. So strange to think it's in such an abandoned state now.

    the building are probably cheaper and easier to remove... the slides and attractions probably have deeper roots to them and more heavy materials to clean up.

    Hi Jake, can confirm those trees at about 1:50 are now fenced off but with a black steel, link fence up to waist height no wood. I think the entrance, ticket house is used for storage - fishing rods! Saw cast members use it. Water dispensers gone again. Otherwise no change up to today.

    Holy fuck. After seeing the two slides I've unearthed a memory hidden for 21 years....I remembered April 1999 when 10 year old me plunged deep into the water and struggled to get to the surface. This park felt a bit dated and old by the time I went but it is cool to see it again

    This is my first viewing of an Explore video by you guys; I had only seen the Abandoned series prior. This was excellent, and I loved the editing! The old promotional footage made it feel a little eerie to me. I guess because it's such a fun, happy place in the commercial, and now it's abandoned and creepy. Anyway, keep up the good work! 👍🏻

      The area where he was is still used. So maintaining the area directly behind the fencing is most likely for safety reasons. Bee hives in buildings, mosquito's in standing water, that kind of stuff.

    Crazy thinking back 20+ years ago that I was there swimming in that park. I think the year was 1992. Infant with some quick research I went to that park within a week of Hurricane Andrew making landfall down in Homestead. Infact the day Andrew hit we should of been on the Big Red Boat. Thankfully we get a raincheck and went later that year.

    So it looks like Disney is ensuring that the structures that are collapsing on them selves are being removed. Hopefully they will use the area in the future for another attraction. It may take several more years though.

    Disney is maintaining some of the land for a potential second Disney Vacation Resorts. They were originally going to build one here and instead built it by the monorail in Orlando. However, that resort has exceeded expectations and now Disney has put back into concept a second Disney Vacation Resort on this island. So they maintain part of it to give them a foothold to build another vacation resort if they decide to spend the money and do it. Hope that helps Jake.

    I need to correct you and I'm sure a few dis-nerds have already:
    Mickey's Backyard BBQ and the Hoop-Dee-Doo Review are two separate dinner shows.
    back to River country: I am sad to see this icon fade, I'm even more sadden by the amount of trash I have had to clean up around that area. ;_;

    Given how many urban explorers take the risk to explore the abandoned River Country, I think the revival of an attraction like Myst Island, but with an abandoned themepark setting, would make a great attraction.

    Hey Jake, just wanted to say, first off, that I love how your videos are put together. The effort and editing is absolutely perfect in all of your videos, especially abandoned (which is my personal favorite series of yours). I also feel like you would like to look into the St. Louis Mills Mall, it was a massive high quality mall that now includes little to no major stores. It used to have an indoor NASCAR themed theme park, and and ice skating rink, but now is a place that you cannot spend much time at. I used to visit as a child a lot and I've seen it fall into practical abandonment and I would love it if you looked into a video on it. Thanks, keep up the good work Jake ;)
