- Hello and welcome to a new video.
This weeks video is a short one.
In tis video I stable the train from Cockfosters platform to Cockfosters depot via the train wash.
So if you have ever wanted to know how we wash the trains now is your chance.

I hope you enjoy this short video and thank you for watching.
I love your videos. My late father worked for 30 yrs on the Piccadilly line, finishing as a shutter at Cockfosters. I have many happy memories of going to work with him, when you could those sort of things, both on the line from Wood Green to Heathrow and down at the depot.
I am fascinated by these little glimpses into bits of the network that we'd never normally see as well as the info you give us in your commentry. Would never have thought the depo wouild have been large enough to span the gap between two stations had you not pointed it out.
It feels even longer when you have to walk from one end to the other in the rain. 🤣
I bet! Though hopefully with the new trains being walkthrough, you'll be able to do some of that walk under cover.
@@MrLewis555 I hope so. I can handle getting cold just not wet
@@dalecharmantravels8057 with you on that. We can but hope :)
Short, but nevertheless very interesting. Never knew trains have a drive through wash like cars. Thanks Dale!
You are welcome. I thought it would be some thing most people don’t think about
No as I’ve seen the washers as we go by but never seen one in action!!! Thanks!!
I loved this video. For you, it’s probably just part of the job, but for a lifelong Tube fan like me, being in the cab through the wash and into the depot is an absolute joy. Thank you 😀
When I was a schoolboy (at Ealing 1957 to 1964) I used to live at Northolt and later, Ickenham. I travelled to school and back on the Central Line, initially from Northolt and later West Ruislip, either switching to the steam push-and-pull (later DMU) at Greenford, or going over the bridge at North Acton.
I used to gaze out of the windows as the train passed Ruislip Depot and imagine all the behind-the-scenes stuff - but never once got to visit. Sixty years later you’ve taken me (virtually) with you in your cab into the storage roads at Cockfosters.
I can’t thank you enough, Dale. Fulfilment of a schoolboy’s dream. 😀
Brian it is my pleasure. I keep trying to record going in to Northfields depot as well but some trying all ways happens. It really means a lot that people are enjoying these videos
Now that's a quick wash.
I am the same in the shower 😅
I’ve always wondered what a drivers eye view through the train wash would look like 😄
Well wonder no more my friend 😁
This was very interesting. There was at one time a train wash at the Ealing Common depot, between Ealing Common and Acton Town stations. That was built back in the 1950’s, and still existed when I emigrated to cCanada in 1967. I was always rather fond of that washer, as my Father had been involved in the design work - he was a draughtsman working at the Acton works. I always looked out for the washing machine in the Ealing Common depot when I took the train into London from Sudbury Town.
Thank you for sharing
Thanks Dale. I went through a bus wash as a kid on an open day - they let us kids sit inside the bus. I never been through a train wash though. I'll have to ask TfL very nicely.
Maybe they should start running tours through the train wash and out the depot the other end. They could give the money to a local charity
"You missed a bit!"
I love that it's called stabling, like horses.
I’m just thankful I don’t have to clean up after them like horses 😅😅
We are spoiled over here. I stop at the wash track and get out and go home. Mechanics operate through the wash and park the train.

Great videos. Fascinating to see similarities and differences between our alignments. Signals, ATS, and so on.
BTW I lived in Bushey, next to Watford as a kid. Stanmore was our station, in ancient times when Bakerloo used to run there, 1970 to about 1976.
Thanks.
Thank you for sharing. I’m glad you found it interesting
I don't usually watch underground cab rides but this one is interesting as it is the depot

I loved that. I was wondering how the trains get cleaned. Thank you

Fascinating! Seemed a quick wash though 😆
Yes it’s just a quick wash just to keep the dust down

This is so interesting yet so fascinating and thanks Dale
You are more than welcome
Mate, I’ve been really enjoying your videos recently, would love to see much more of this kind of content (cab rides etc). Keep up the great work my friend!
Thank you I really do appreciate it. There will be a little gap before I can film any more of the underground. I am waiting on a new camera to arrive that I hope will work better in the tunnels
Dale, this was very interesting....never knew about the train washes. I just discovered your channel about 2 weeks ago & really enjoying the subway(Tube) rides from the cab. This would've been a good job for me in earlier years...always liked standing up front & looking out at the tracks & the switching, etc. Something on my bucket list would be to drive one of those pickup trucks with the train wheels on it down the tracks of a regular railroad line....keep the Tube ones coming!!
Thanks for the comment. I will be doing some more filming on the line soon
Thank you Dale another top video
You are welcome.
Super cool. Thank you.

I really hope the TfL will accept and even help you improving your content. Also, you're a few on UA-cam. It would be great to synergize all this passion.
I can’t see them doing that. But you never know
Way too short of a cab ride, but completely fascinating! Thanks for sharing!
Have you checked out my other Piccadilly line videos? They are longer cab rides
@dalecharmantravels8057 oh most certainly I have! They are great!
Thank you
Loved it, interesting about the coloured tiles, after the wash why does he show you fingers and not say a board number? And the controller has set points to guide you in. A fantastic cab view and insight into your awesome job.
Thank you I am glad you enjoyed it. The signaller will set the points to get you as far as the stop board. Then the shunt we controles the points. As for the fingers I don’t know. I have asked many times why we don’t have a paddle or some thing that says east, middle or west. The depot is going to be rebuilt so maybe it will change in the future
As a mainline driver, I definitely prefer your stop boards with the illuminated authority to pass. There may be some similar on the NR metals, but not anywhere I sign.
That is the only in ewe have like that. The others are just stop boards or shunt signals
Would love to see more of all things to do with the depot!
I will try to do some bits soon
Cool video. My local line 😊
Thank you
nice
Thanks
Nice video
Thank you
Thanks for this awesome video. Are the drivers also driving the trains in the maintenance shed or are there shunters for those moves. Because if you're able and allowed to show the maintenance shed this would be awesome as well. Also a little tour through the shed to show how the maintenance is done. Of course only if you're allowed to do this and if you want to.
We do drive in to the shed. At Cockfosters I have only done it once. I am hoping to film Northfields next week. As for looking around the mashed im not sure they would be too happy. Never say never
Thanks for the video Dale i have always wanted to know how underfround trains are washed, i just wish they did this to tbe central line since they look way overdue for a wash
You need wonder no more. Now you know should that ever be a question at a pub quiz
Could you please do more from the depot about the whole overnight process , servicing etc and other aspects, shunters , signalling , stations etc
Sadly no. I’m not around over night and plus the staff wouldn’t appreciate me filming them Sorrry
That was an incredibly quick wash, does that actually give them a decent clean? That was a long siding after the wash.
Be interested to see the interior clean too at some point.
It’s never going to be as clean as a car would be but it gets most of the dust off the train
That was fascinating! Do the trains have their interiors cleaned and vacuumed every night as well while stabled?
They get cleaned every night. I think it’s just to pick up rubbish, wash the floors and a quick wipe down. They get a deeper clean now and again. Not sure how often
@@dalecharmantravels8057 Got to keep the bed bugs at bay!! Just kidding!😂
Poor old 73 stock looking worn now a few with dark panels ,they pass my flat and I’m thinking soon they will be gone i remember them when brand new in 1975 when Hatton Cross opened unpainted aluminium with half red fronts blue seating like the DMS bus and bright yellow ends inside ,the refurbishment was done to a high standard inside and out the fact the paint has lasted over 20 years with out re spraying ,sad to see them go ,if you see Richard Riley say Ollie said you lucky so and so that’s if you know him 😊😊
Cheers
Mark 😊😊
The name doesn’t ring a bell. On the railway every one is just mate 😁

I subscribe as long as u keep makeing train videos
I will do my best. I do have a mixture of plane and train videos coming up
Wise decision to allow the conductor rails to stop short of the train wash. I guess you're relying on the last carriage to still be picking up the power.
You are yes. Plus going in it is in a very slight down hill gradient
Interesting watch! As coach driver, I am interested to know what the dutyboard is like for night tube train driver doing Cockfoster to Heathrow and back!
There are all different duties for the day and night tube. As a general rule the night tube drivers will do 2 round trips. It could be 2 Heathrow’s are a Rayners and a Heathrow. They are all pretty much 8 hr duties
Good morning Dale. Just discovered your content. Really enjoying it. Have a nice weekend Dale
Hello and welcome it’s great to have you with us
Interesting 🤔 video. I noticed there is graffiti on some of those trains 🚆. LOL.
Sadly some people have too much time and money and like to waste it on graffiti. There is no way I would buy spray paint and then go use it one some one else’s property knowing they are just going to wash it off 🤣
Nice video. Is it possible to do a cab tour? I would understand if they wouldn't allow it as ive never seen tfl allow something like this before
I might be able to do one next week for a future video. No promises though

Hello and welcome
@@dalecharmantravels8057 thank you
May I ask why they leave the interior lights on in the carriages when they've been stabled? Thanks for the video.
The cleaners need them on ( they don’t have train keys) plus the depot staff will be preparing the trains for the next day
@@dalecharmantravels8057 thank you
Interesting to see how trains are closed down for the day.
Thank you
Could you show a video of the Team going into the trains to dirty them before going into service , especially the toilets because I would like to see the technique used to get the toilets so filthy.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I would love too but we don’t have toilets on our trains
what do you do after stabling.Double check with the East/west Cabin on radio that your in the right position?
No once we stable it we leave it. If it’s incorrect the depot staff will move it
for the new stock, when will drivers start to be trained with the simulator or defects?
I’ve not heard any thing yet on when training will start. I would guess later this year or early next year. If they do it too soon with out a train for us to drive we would need more training. As they say if you don’t use it you lose it
Do the top of the trains get washed or is it just the sides?
Just the sides
Do any trains accidentally go through the wash with open doors? It looked like one of the stabled trains had its doors open as you went past.
Drivers have gone through with the cab door open many times. The passenger doors no. The doors that had the doors open in the depot was one the technician was checking over. Each train will be prepped at night and one of the peeps is to open and close the doors multiple times to ensure they are all working. As driver we wouldn’t move a train with passenger doors open except in extreme circumstances
for every train,is it the same train number on the led orange light.Such as train 228,203 or does it change?
Each train has its own train number. We may change it if we swap trains with another driver. Let’s say I’m going to Heathrow and the train behind is for Northfields. Then if mine has a defect we will change trains so I would take there train to Heathrow and they would put my defective train in the depot. Then we would change number so that I would still run under say train 222
You said trains get cleaned inside and outside, but the seats are always dusty. So what's the cleaning process, if any, for the seats?
The answer is I don’t know. I know the trains get a good clean but don’t know how often they get done. I think at Cockfosters they can do 2 a night so maybe it’s every few months. I don’t think it was a good idea to replace the dark blue seats with the current light ones. They just show up all the dirt
Are you responsible for opening and closing the passenger doors at stations? If so, how do you cope with closing the doors when the platform is full of people.... is there a set time the doors stay open?
Yes we do open and close the doors. For me once I have a green signal and the automated voice announcer has finished I will then look at closing the doors. On busy stations it can be hard to get them closed.
Enjoy a few pints on me as a thanks for these videos. Have a good weekend!
That is very kind of you. Thank you soo much
does it also say in the green duty card saying what road you are on when booking on or ecs towards the depot
When we are stabling a train no. The shunt we will tell us. If we take one out of the depot then there is a list when we book on showing what train number is on what road
How do you park up the train on the depot.I don't really see the diamond part or the stop marker
You just stop the train with the boarding platform in the cab door
I'm guessing every video that comes up is on a Saturday?
That’s what I am aiming to do
are the fleet apprenticeship also allowed to drive the trains for test?
Not on the main line. No idea if they will be allowed to drive with in the depot
Why is the term Road used when stabling or in sidings?
No idea
has there ever been a time that a shunt signal may have not turned horizontally and you have to do the safety procedure?
On a shunt we wouldn’t pass it if it didn’t move. As there would be points involved there is a risk of a derailment. Staff would have to what’s known as scotch and clip the points in place
Hey so towards the end of the video, the train on the left kept opening and closing the doors. Why's that?
The train technician is just checking all the doors are opening and closing correctly
@@dalecharmantravels8057 Oh right, thanks!
how many mph does the piccadilly line do from hounslow west to central Eastbound and hounslow east to osterly?
The maximum is 45mph but every driver will drive it differently. The things that will effect speed are signals, weather and the train it’s self some can struggle to get full speed
@dalecharmantravels8057 ahh so that's why from hounslow west to central its a bit slow
When you leave H/west you are going up hill. In the wet the wheels struggle for grip. Then as you approach central the you have 2 or 3 signals. Between H/east and Osterley it’s not a huge distance to get up too much speed
Do they wash the trains ? How frequently ? Once a year ?
I don’t know the exact frequency but they do get washed regular
has there ever been a operational incident in the depot and what caused it?
A couple of years back a train de railed in the depot due to heavy snow build up
@dalecharmantravels8057 ohh so the train will be scrapped I suppose or refixed by the fleet apprentices in the depot?
There was no damage to the train. It just means at least one set of wheels has one off the rails. People just assume de rail means crash
is there a door name in the cab.such as J O M.ive have a distruct line simulator trial and they had name
So the door at the front is the M door the one from the cab to the passenger saloon is the J door
what are the procedure of a signal failure?
Stop identify the signal. Contact the correct person and act on the instructions given. Then in most cases trip past the signal and drive at a reduced speed for 2 stop signals that show a clear (Green aspect). That’s the short version
I needed to know why they don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so that they can extend the unused abandoned underground train stations. Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into Five cars per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers. A Stock Train and 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the Waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it larger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Railway tunnel into a High-Speed Railway lines? The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Railway line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. Then put the modernised 11 car per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised Waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 47 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project if that will be OK for London Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from the Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden more Easily. Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly Line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street can they also make another brand new underground train station in Chingford and could they extend the Piccadilly Line and the DLR right up to Chingford? All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Scania N112, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Five carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains. Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and can they order Every 67 Octagon and Every 37 Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.13 and unique small no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 147MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 147MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units, can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!!!!!, oh can you make all of those Coal Boxes’s 18 Tonnes for all of those 147MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!! so please make sure that the Builders can do as they are told!!!!! And Please do something about these very very important Professional ideas Please? Prime Minister of England, Prime Minister of Australia, Prime Minister of Sweden, Prime Minister of Germany, Prime Minister of Italy, Prime Minister of Poland and that Includes the Mayor of London.
That’s is a lot of suggestions 😂😂. The answer is I don’t know but I will pass it on to the bosses 😂😂
I thought no whistle between 7 am and pm 😂😂
You got me there 🤣🤣. In the depot we use them for safety to alert people to a moving train at any time of the day or night. It’s just out in the main line we don’t
where are the headlights was looking pretty dark
the headlights are not for the drivers to see but for other people to see the front of the train
Hmmmm three rails, 05/10/24
Crikey I dont think we EVER washed our rolling stock at Wimbledon TMD.🤣
I’m not sure they look any cleaner after going through the wash
Are the doors on the train next to you ok near the end? lol
Yes the train technicians are checking all the doors are working
if the whistle were broken, would you have to go lower than mph for extra saftey?
The rule book says to lower your speed and be extra vigilant
That's it?!
Why are the lights on in all the stabled trains? Seems like a waste.
I agree. However they are getting prepped and cleaned.i don’t think they get turned off after they are done.

wait, the trains get washed? lol
They go through the wash at least 🤣🤣
I thought they ran through the wash slower than 5mph.....
Much slower you always run the risk of getting gapped which means you could end up not on power
Water and Electricity don't mix
What protections are there in the Wash?
I can imagine the Body of the train becoming Live !
There are no power rails in the wash. As you go through the rear of the train is on the power and as you exit the front is in the power. There is no issue of the body becoming live even if there was power rails there. It’s no different to heavy rain so is still safe
