One of the greatest bands ever formed but blighted with so much tragedy

A touch of a Procol Harum vibe going on with a splash of the East End. Brilliant.

This is such a beautiful piece of music, The small faces were like lightning in a bottle, something so rare, powerful and amazing that only comes around every now and then. Thanks for this upload!

Thanks. Is it true The Universal was the last track they did then? Could you let me know when Autumn Stone and Wham Bam Thank you Mam were cut. Many Thanks

"The Universal" was done in late May 1968 with just Marriott on vocals/guitar in his back garden, and then the clarinet and trombone, along with additional guitars and drums, were recorded on June 5th, 1968 at Olympic Studios in London. But "The Universal" was not the last track recorded by the group because both "Autumn Stone" and "Wham Bam" were recorded on September 11th, 1968. Funny to note that Ian McLagan did not actually play on the recording of "The Universal"

Interesting. I think Nicky Hopkins played on the released version of Wham Bam. Any ideas who(names) did the brass on Rollin Over and Universal and the live stuff from Newcastle. Apparently, the screaming was overdubbed as was the piano -although this is open to debate!

The brass on the Newcastle stuff and "Rollin' Over" are Eddie "Tan Tan" Thornton (a friend of Ronnie and Mac's from Jamaica) and Harry Becket on trumpets, Derek Wadsworth on trombone, and Peter Coe on tenor sax; on "The Universal" Derek Wadsworth plays trombone and Donald Fay plays the clarinet. The Newcastle stuff is very interesting because the screaming was indeed overdubbed and it was even put on a tape loop, so you hear the same 5 seconds of screaming consistently. The piano was also overdubbed as well because on "Every Little Bit Hurts" you are able to hear leakage of Steve Marriott's original piano while the more prominent piano is playing at the same time

Cheers. Could I talk to you about this as I'm writing an article on session musicians used on Small Faces recordings and gigs. Re Newcastle stuff, one theory is that the brass section included Ronnie Scott , Tony Coe, Ian Hamer Johnny Marshall Morris Platt and Les Condon.

Your theory about the musicians used on the Newcastle stuff seems more accurate than who I mentioned before, but I know for sure that the line-up with Eddie "Tan Tan" Thornton, Harry Becket, Derek Wadsworth, and Peter Coe played on "Rollin' Over", as well as "Eddie's Dreaming" (along with Neemoi "Speedy" Acquaye on conga drums and Lyn Dobson on flute), "Wide Eyed Girl On The Wall", "All Our Yesterdays", "Collibosher", and P.P. Arnold's song "If You Think You're Groovy" (along with Lyn Dobson on flute) which Small Faces played on. Here's the rest of the musicians I know for a fact that have played on Small Faces recordings: P.P. Arnold sings backing vocals on "Tin Soldier", "I Feel Much Better", and "Call It Something Nice"; Donald Fay and Derek Wadsworth play clarinet and trombone, respectively, on "The Universal"; Lyn Dobson plays flute on "The Autumn Stone"; Nicky Hopkins plays piano on the "Wham Bam" outtake "Me You And Us Too". I should probably take my research further because I am still unsure who plays sax on "Donkey Rides, Penny A Glass" and I am skeptical about whether or not Peter Coe played tenor sax on "All Our Yesterdays" and "Wide Eyed Girl", but my guess is that he appears on those tracks. There is also an unknown baritone sax player on all the songs I mentioned that feature brass. Funny to note that Small Faces played all the instruments on the bulk of their tracks. I hope this information is useful. Cheers
