I live in Riverside. At the library, I overheard a rumor that the Spanish and Indians built a long tunnel from the Mission Inn all the way to MT. Rubidoux.

WOW! Friggin' crazy! There are TONS of interesting rumors around the Mission Inn Tunnels. According to this website below (don't know how valid the information is, but it's intriguing to read nonetheless), rumor has it that these tunnels date back to the days of Prohibition, and they were a means of smuggling the alcohol around. There's also rumors of paranormal activity at these tunnels' entrances...😳 Maybe it's time for a ghost hunt in Riverside?? hmmm...

That library in downtown Riverside was built in 1965. The original library, in that same location, was called the Carnegie library and looked like the Mission Inn.
What is now the city museum was, at one time, the city police station. Next door was the city hall.
That “large paper cup “ was a factory when I was a kid. One of our neighbors (when I was growing up) worked there.
My grandparents came to Riverside from Kansas in the depression (1937) and moved to a home near Mt. Rubidoux. I was born and raised in Riverside but I’ve lived in the Northwest for 40 years. I return from time to time but none of my family are alive so there’s no one to visit. Gravestones, yes, people, no.
But I do miss certain things there.

As you stand facing the Mission on 7th, with the arches facing you, notice how they appear to be ‘broken off’ at Orange street. The reason is those arches once continued down 7th to the freeway overpass (sorry, I don’t recall the freeway number,I haven’t lived there in a number of years). They were removed, I think, because of the continued maintenance.

@@hoseysmoseys the museums are closed because the mayor doesn't give a damn about maintaining them properly. The very few things that the city does have is being constantly ignored. They rather build more hotels that are constantly empty and overpriced apartments instead of building houses that people here actually want to buy. LA people move in because they ruined their own city, and now that Riverside is being ruined, natives are moving out to basically anywhere else

Another Riversider here. I am a docent at Heritage House, and we docents have done historical cosplay (1890s clothing) there for years before cosplay was much of a thing. There is a reservation system but walk-ins are welcome. As you said, open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays 12 noon to 3:15 when the last tour begins. The house is gorgeous! In October we will be having the house themed to be a place of mourning in an exhibit called "Behind the Veil". At Christmas we go all out for a Victorian Christmas with an open house day and music and activities
The "catacombs" at the Mission Inn had various purposes but a main one was to funnel customers from the train stations a few blocks away to the inn out of the weather. The proprietor, Frank Miller, was known to get on the train from San Bernardino and talk riders into stopping in Riverside to stay at the Mission Inn. After many years of neglect late in the twentieth century the inn was rescued by a millionaire named Duane Roberts, retrofitted for earthquake safety and is now again a hub of Riverside. During Christmas time the whole building and grounds are lit up by the Festival of Lights with animatronic figures and thousands of lights.
As was mentioned we now have a new main library, but the old library isn't going to waste. Actor and comedian Cheech Marin has housed his large collection of Chicano art in the revamped building, now known as the The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture or simply "The Cheech". We are so lucky! It is a vibrant place.

Because of the topography of Riverside (Box Springs Mountains/Santa Ana River), the city has few ingress and egress (entering/exiting points) points! There is only Mission Boulevard, and the 60 Freeway to allow traffic to go due West toward Los Angeles or due East towards Palm Springs. And although the 91 Freeway does go West, it only does so after a slight bend South through Orange County. From the South West, there are only four ways in or out of Riverside. They are from Collett Avenue, the 91 Freeway, Magnolia Avenue, and Indiana Avenue. On the Eastern section of Riverside there are very few ingress and egress points as well. They are the 60 Freeway, the 215 Freeway, Box Springs Road, Eastridge Avenue, Alessandro Boulevard, Cactus Avenue, Van Buren Boulevard, Harley Knox Boulevard, and Cajalco Expressway! The only other ways in or out of Riverside are from either Arlington Avenue on the Central West portion of the city leading to Norco or from Van Buren Boulevard also near the Central Western approaches. Whatever the case, it appears that Riverside is in a de-facto "commuter spider web!" Traffic congestion will only increase if we cannot solve this problem! DS

The cup was a fountain. Water poured over the top for years.

Oh cool!! I remember when I was younger, the cup was completely painted differently, but never realized it was a fountain! Do you know when it stopped working?☺️

@@hoseysmoseys maybe some time in the 80’s. I’m not really sure. I do remember taking a tour of the factory when I was a kid. Waaaaay back when.

I am now 62 years of youthfulness. In my life I do not recall a fountain ever atop of the giant cup on Iowa avenue! The same goes for my siblings! WTF?

Riverside City and County sits on top on an Ancient Moorish Civilization, Ancient Egyptian/Atlantis Civilization...Dark Skin Swarthy Wooly Hair People, The True Asiatics, The Olmec, Washitaw Muurs. Queen Califia. Our Land was stolen by European Colonizers who raped The Moors/Muurs and Mongolians Asians who were already here, creating your modern day Indians. The Original American Indians are Muurs/Moors. The Advanced Moorish Architecture is all throughout Riverside. The Names of The Cities are Moorish, Islamic, Egyptian names. The Moors already built Advanced Civilizations and Cities all throughout The Americas before European Colonizers arrived, The European Colonizers burnt down our buildings, and the buildings they ddint destroy they simply Claimed and Re-furbished, then Lied about History and told His-Story through the Mind and Eyes of European Colonizers. The modern day Native Americans who claim to be American Indians are actually Mongolians from Asia, who mixed in with The Dark Skin Wooly Hair people of The Americas who were already on the land, as The Modern Day Native Americans DID NOT build STONE MASONRY as The MOORS. The Spanish all came with Moors, as most Europeans could not read or write at the time. History has been told through a racist European and racist Latin point of View. The Truth is Mission Inn was already there and was refurbished by Europeans who recenly invaded America after defeating The Moors in Europe and kidnapping Moors Maps to eventually find and invade Lemuria aka Atlantis aka TA-MERI aka A-MOOR-RA-KA aka A-Muur-Re-K aka AMURUKA...Land of The Plum Serpent People! America is Atlantis, we left Ancient America and built Ancient Nubia, Kush, Egypt, Heru/Peru, America is Egypt of The West. Built by Muurs/Moors the true American Indians. We were already here and did not come as Slaves from African via Europeans, as The 1st Slaves brought to America are Hybrid Pale Skin Europeans. Riverside, CA is an Ancient Moorish Civilization, with Underground Tunnels all through The City, as Moors built underground.

It used to be where they manufactured Dixie cups you know the little paper cups you put in the bathroom. that’s a giant Dixie cup I live down to the same neighborhood. It’s right there next to Highgrove. I live in grand Terrace..
