Greetings from Scotland! Diana was 18yo here, last year. Everything you said and all your reactions are quite normal when first listening to Diana singing! Some reactors are completely dumbstruck! Even advanced vocal coaches/trainers are lost for an explanation! Some even insist that it's not her real voice! There is SO much that you need to know about young Diana, but this is the best I can do right now:-
Diana is 19yo currently but I've been following her since she was around 13yo. Diana is a natural Dramatic Contralto so the lower registers are her comfort zone but she now has a 4 octave range and it's increasing. She also naturally sings with polyphonic overtones so it sounds like many voices at the same time!
Diana's birthmother had multiple miscarriages but when Diana came along, she seemed to hate her. She verbally and physically abused her, trying to drown her and belittle her. It all culminated when (at 3yo) she dragged her to a bus stop with a broken collarbone and abandoned her, saying "Survive if you can" A passing relative took her in but because she cried constantly (naturally with a broken collarbone) she took her to the authorities who removed Diana from her birthmothers care and placed her in an orphanage. For almost 2 years Diana never gave up hope and she knew that she was meant for something better. (This story is in her Wikipedia entry) Finally her new mother (Irina Ponik, who worked as a masseuse there occasionally) Signed her adoption papers and took her home. She vowed to pay Irina back for her kindness. Irina had a real struggle because Diana had obviously been badly affected by the experiences and at 5yo, she had a very bad stammer. It was recommended that she be taken for singing lessons to help this and immediately it was recognised that Diana had perfect pitch and an excellent ear for music and songs. 1 year later, at 6yo, Diana was performing solo on stage!
This young unique phenomenon sang everywhere and anywhere she could, working constantly to earn money for the family who rescued her. At 13yo she held her 1st solo concert and one of the songs she sang was in a very rare Sephardic Jewish/Spanish dialect, a song called "Me Voy" (I'm leaving) with a power and emotional commitment that staggers belief! ua-cam.com/video/pnlgB90iTf0/v-deo.html
She was already winning every contest in Russia and other countries that she could get to. Then at 14yo Diana took part in an amazing Russian project "You're Super!" for abandoned/disadvantaged children (because Diana spent time in an orphanage) The 1st song she performed shocked the judges and audience so much, it went viral. Bami Rose, for you and any members of your audience that may not know, this performance took place on September 25, 2021, when Diana Ankudinova was only 18 years old, during a new vocal competition called the ShowMaskGoOn! This vocal competition was televised over nine weeks, one episode per week with nine professional singers competing against each other, and based on their individual performances they awarded judging points to each other. When Diana was not competing, she was a member of this judging panel. Each week, a different singer took the stage and performed a different song over the nine weeks. Each contestant had to sing a different song from different genres using different styles. The ShowMaskGoOn! concluded on November 20, 2021.
Diana’s cover of Elvis Presley’s classic, “Can’t Help Falling In Love” demonstrates Diana Ankudinova has developed into what many vocal professionals say is a true contralto voice type, and for those that don’t know, a contralto is the lowest type of female voice, and a true contralto voice is very, very rare.
First, to answer a very common question asked about Diana's vocal range. Now, the vocal range helps in defining a female singer's voice type and at age 13 in 2017, her vocal range was measured from a low of D3 to a high of A5. As of September 2021, 4 years later at age 18, her lower functional range was measured from a low of C3 to a high of B♭5, giving Diana almost a 3-octave range. But it's not just about how low she can go, it's the exceptional quality of her tone in her lower register. It's in her timbre, the roundness, the fullness, and the depth of her voice, along with her ability to create and access an enormous amount of resonance that helps to further define Diana as a "dramatic contralto", the deepest, darkest, and most powerful contralto voice type and it's the rarest of the rare contralto voice types.
So, the question becomes, how does Diana do it? How can such a young female singer achieve such a low, rich, deep, resonant, and profound sound? Without actually being able to scope her vocal tract while she is producing those low rich notes to see what is actually happening, the general conciseness, again of many vocal professionals is simply attributing Diana’s unique ability to her winning the genetic lottery, meaning she was just born with unique vocal anatomy. Diana’s vocal folds, (vocal cords), appear to be longer and thicker than most female singers. Her larynx also appears to be larger and her pharynx similarly appears to be longer than other female singers. It’s this unique vocal anatomy that gives Diana Ankudinova the ability to produce the low, deep, rich, full sounds that along with her unique tone quality and her ability to access an enormous reservoir of resonance makes her stand out, but without actually scoping her vocal track, there is no way to be 100% sure.
Also, Diana is a real polyphonic singer which is another extremely rare accomplishment for someone so young. A singer who has mastered this polyphonic vocal technique can create one, and sometimes two, different tones at the same time which adds to the harmonic overtones and undertones that can make it sound like there is a synthesizer over her voice, or more than one voice singing. This polyphonic ability is why some people mistakenly believe Diana Ankudinova is using some form of electronic voice manipulation or pitch correction software to alter or adjust her sound. Others believe another person is singing in the background, or she is lip-syncing over a previously recorded vocal track that was altered or modified. There is nothing artificial or manipulative going on with Diana's voice at all. Neither is anyone else singing with her off stage nor is she lip-syncing to a previously recorded vocal track. The other voices you are hearing are just backing tracks used to fill in and round out the performance along with the backing track for the musical score. Diana Ankudinova and only Diana Ankudinova is singing “Can't Help Falling In Love”.
During Diana’s performance, the judge on the top row who is the first to stand during the performance is a well known Russian opera tenor, Yusif Eyvazov from Azerbaijan who was invited to be a special guest judge for this competition. Yusif Eyvazov is also married to the world-famous soprano Anna Netrebko. At the end of Diana Ankudinova’s performance, she receives a standing ovation from all her fellow competitors. Another fellow judge, Julia Parshuta, who is also a well-known contemporary Russian singer is the blond woman dressed in red, standing in the center row. She looks totally shocked at the end of Diana's performance and puts both hands on top of her head with a look of total surprise and disbelief. Julia Parshuta, along with the other judges now know, that at some point during this competition she and all the other judges will have to compete for points against Diana, who everyone now knows is a truly generational talent. Finally, Diana was the winner of this competition.
