Love Billy Strings! Sadly, his early home life was filled with drug use (his dad, uncle and many friends died from it). He truly is a good human! He went back to his elementary school with 200 guitars and gave them to the kids.
I have watched several videos of him doing this. This is his best performance. I like the fact that these guys sitting around in a basement partying and they are not aware that they are listening to a future star singing a Grammy winning song. Blows my mind! 🤯
I live in Traverse City where Billy kinda found his way before moving to Nashville. I saw him do his first open mic night at the Hayloft and was blown away I took full advantage of him being unknown in a small town and saw him dozens of times. Even had a few beers and shared a little smoke with him! So happy for his well deserved success!!
I was lucky enough to get to see Billy Strings and his band at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville 2 weeks ago on May 7th. They were absolutely incredible. They played for a solid hour or more in their first set. The place was packed. There was SO much love in the air. For his second set he had Bob Weir, singer from the Grateful Dead, join them on stage. It was an awesome night. Billy and the guys sold out the Ryman 3 nights. I will follow Billy and be back to see him again. Such an amazing talent. Peace !!!
My grandfather listened to bluegrass. Billy took it and combined it with other elements of genres and took it to another level. It's basically shred metal psychedelic bluegrass
You can tell someone's a good guitarist when just them messing around sounds amazing. At the beginning, when he's just warming up, he plays better than I ever could.
You can watch him do it on the Grand Ole Opry with a band 8 years later.he wrote the song about things he new well friends and his own family had some serious drug problems.and he would be like 19 20 years old here.
Listen to Billy strings comes alive. It’s a force of nature don’t get me wrong. I’m not the biggest Billy strings fan in the world hardly but the kid is a super talent I mean I just hope we can stay clean enough so we don’t say he passed ahead of his time I think he’s just incredible. He wrote this. He was 19 in this video. Since then, he's become a HUGE talent! Grammy winner in 2021. Touring all over. Several albums. One of the best pickers around today. Was taught bluegrass by his dad. Turned to metal as a young teen but came back to bluegrass. He's a once in a lifetime talent.

I love you appreciating the musicianship and trying to convey that. Indeed all music represents human emotions and it shouldn't be surprising everyone feels the same ones
Before Billy got really big that video's comment section was just full of hilarious jokes about the guy standing in the background. My favorite one, author unknown, is, "Man in the green shirt looking like he's giving out side quests."

Love how talent and art rooted in universal truth connects across music genres. You’re totally right. If this was a rap song where the rapper communicated the same thoughts, it would be a great song just because he’s talking about a reality people from the hood and the hills know. Great reaction.
Billy Strings is probably one of the best current bluegrass guitarists and flat pickers There are a number of good young musicians coming through Marcus King - country Christone "Kingfish" Ingram - blues/blues/rock Samantha Fish - blues/blues rock to name a few
I watched a video where Billy said he wrote that song because Meth was a big problem where he grew up and got to a lot of people. So it obviously didn’t get him but some of his friends for sure. I just moved to Arkansas (coming from Denver) and hear a lot of this kinda tale, and I’m sitting here like damn y’all should’ve just smoked a bowl.

There're lots of Billy Strings Band videos on YT, ONe of the best is the concert from Red Rocks in Clolorado. He's played with lots of people including Carlos Santana, and has many music awards
Love your breakdowns as always. The song is based on one of Billy's friends who couldn't stay clean. He was on probation & got pulled over, and it was an empty drug bag on the car floor with trace amounts of meth, which were enough to give him 20 years

And the phrase I just put the lighter to the bulb and watch the burn is a phraseology that deals with math. You wanna really know about this kid, check out his backstory. Thanks for listening.
What makes this performance even more impressive is that, according to Billy, this was taken in a basement during a house party... he and his friends had taken a handful of mushrooms and needed to get away from the drunkards upstairs, so his head was sideways and he could still play and sing like that. lol.
