Interesting side note: actually smithing your own blacksmithing tools has traditionally been one of the tests that a blacksmith apprentice would make in the course of their apprenticeship, and when they were done it was a sign of their competence.
Another interesting thing about Blacksmithing. To prove your worth as a Smith one needs to make rose head nails at a rate of 100 per hour. My best is around 50...

I genuinely respect how when you fail at making something, you turn it into something awesome and functional. I have seen a lot of improvising on this channel, and am consistently impressed with your ability to recover something everyone thought was gone forever. Also, I have a suggestion. You should do bronze casting. Make a dagger or something.
So little tip from a bladesmith. To get better bends you can use the horn of your anvil. Other than that I’m impressed with how this project went.
Start on the Horn, finish with scrolling tongs.

I'm sure you've already gotten this a lot, but that annealing stage you did is also called tempering. Basically unhardening it just a little to be non-brittle, and you can do it in an oven for a controlled environment! Just 400 degrees for an hour or two.
Be careful on your hunt of the Wild Marshmallow. While it does have a better flavor when cooked to perfection over open flame, they are far fiercer if cornered and don’t appreciate El having their dens encroached upon. God Speed, mighty Clev3r! ~~you’re going to need it~~
You can find flint in massive quantities in the US at a location known as Flint Ridge Ohio.
As per usual amazing work. Definitely would work well as a first metal project
I recommend looking at videos on how to strike the "flint" stone for more sparks more consistently.

For future use. I took a large pliers like yours and took some steel piping and tapped the over the pliers grips. Then tapped it tightly on the grips, and hammered it. Using a hack saw I cut the new handles to my preferred length and VOILE` a cheap useful Blacksmith tool.
a good first set of tongs that you finish yourself are available at Ken's custom iron, tongs are one of those things that are easier to make if you already have them
Fun fact grom a rock nerd, we do have flint, jasper, chert and agate (all varieties of microcrystalline quartz) in the US. For example, Flint Ridge is a geological formation (and also place name) in Ohio that native Americans mined for tool making flint that was traded widely throughout the eastern and middle US. I am so excited to get to share something useful on Skill Share, where I learn... just about everything! Love you guys so much!!!

Nice job, much better then the first time I tried to make this many, many, many, many years ago. I could get the shape but not the spark, I did eventually figure out I was using the wrong metal.
It honestly took me a bit too! I think I over heated it to give it more resilience so I had to re harden and try again.

Awesome job! Just an FYI, you can temper metal in just your home oven. 200C/392F for an hour done twice does the job nicely enough for most projects 😁 (Disclaimer: I have the bare minimum blacksmith training aka an artisan degree in metalwork, but this the easiest way and how I was taught to do it if a kiln isn't available)

I would love to see your take on the medieval fantasy genre. Maybe even a halfway point for you where you take something from fantasy, LOTR perhaps, and you break down the real things from history that inspired them. Or go the other way and take vaguely historical looking things from fantasy and see if they would actually work. Just spitballing. It would be a blast to see anything you come up with.

If you plan on using the pork forge more often you should/ need to coat the wool in a ridgidizer and/or refractory cement bc the fibers thr wool can ans will put off while using the forge is harmful to your respiratory system
...and maybe add a brick on one side to keep in the heat.
Just found this channel recently and as someone who always is looking on how to make all kind of stuff from zero and also someone who loves the crafting jobs on RPG's I wanna thank you so much for your content!
a few points mate, don't temper your striker at all, the harder they are the better and the more sparks it will throw. If you need to, isolate the strike plate in water then anneal any parts you want to soften with a propane torch.
Secondly, flint and chert are the same rock and America has both. Plus any quartz-based stone should work and I've sparked on so many different types of stones ranging from obsidian to beryls (5.5 moh's to 9 moh's)
Thirdly using files is great, I use files exclusively now for forging flint strikers, just be sure to use old files as new ones tend to be case hardened and won't spark.
Toaster ovens are great for annealing

I know its a year on from this release, but: As a person is a hobby blacksmith with a fair amount of equipment, a pair of flat blacksmiths tongs, and some smoothed over needlenose pliers for rolling small curves (e.g. the 'tails' on the steel striker)

I don’t know if this has ever been said, but just now seeing it, Cl3ver looks like Dr.Strange variant. Which hopefully gives Him some creative ideas down the road to a cosplay or something… maybe even see him in MoM

You need to remember on a flint and steel or as Blackpowder flintlocks the steel gives the spark not the flint unlike a faro rod like the one in lighters. In the case of lighters one steel is hard and one metal is soft. So it is not the rock that sparks it is the steel and you can use about any hard rock if it is harder than the steel. Now with the steel the steps 1 forge the item 2 heat it back up. 3 if knives cool it fast in anything. 4 heat it up to 400 F than let is slowly cool. But remember if you use water or ice you can make it really hard and Japanese swords is cooled in water but only the face or edge they use clay on the back side and they don’t forge the curve it is done by the cold water. So with a flit and steel if the steel is to hard it will not work as good.

You probably already know this one, but try using the hammer without the glove, gives you better control. Sure, it's less safe and you feel the heat more initially, but after a while for me the gloves become an oven and using gloves on the hammer hand feels like using an oven mitt, of course it's safe but it's also unwieldy

Now that you've used char cloth you could try to use the more historically accurate way (for the viking age) and try it with some tinder-fungus-amadou, since they didn't use char cloth yet.
