In this video I make my entry for the #rocklerdeskchallenge the 'sling desk.' This desk has been designed to better integrate work and storage environments; allowing the desk-top to be quickly cleared away whilst still providing easy access to reference books and papers. The cutout and sling also allows cord and plugs to be passed through the table top, and provides the perfect place to rest a pencil, store bigger pieces of stationary like rulers or lean a special book or painting.

Brilliant. My guess : You don't only love making things, you clearly love making movies too right ?
Thanks Alex & I would say its a love, hate relationship! I love piecing together a story line and how it enables you to share projects, but I do sometimes wish there was somebody who was more adept at film-making to create better shots and flow :)
ALEX!?!
Man checking constantly to see if you have new content. Inspired by your craft don't stop making. We are builders no breakers!
You're killing it buddy!
Killing it is an overreaction but thank you Keith! You mentioned in one of your last videos that you're in need of a desk - are you thinking of doing it in time to enter this competition?
@@jmakes3745 love your innovations! I don't think I'll be able to post it for the competition, it might be a few weeks or months before I get around to making it
The chamfer around the sling was an incredible idea. Great foresight
Thanks Bexar, glad you appreciated the detail!
Very nice design and i really like the joints on the legs
Thanks Matt, they were definitely a lot of work, but I think worth it in the end, this is the sturdiest thing I've ever made haha
Ok, it’s awesome. The movie and the product too.
Haha, thanks mate :)
Brilliant, really enjoyed that. Encouraging to see beautiful things being made with reasonably priced gear.
Thanks Jack!
An absolute winner, even if it's not! Great design as always.
Thanks Paul :)
I like that your design encourages laying out multiple inspirational materials but a clean slate can be achieved in almost no time if you have to spend time working on the boring bits like taxes, processing invoices, general admin. I have a hard time actually working at a desk space because i don't want to put all the accumulated paperwork/books away-the storage slot is a great solution! I always enjoy your work-thanks for putting forth the effort that you do, it is noticed and appreciated. Cheers from Kentucky!
Really great description/explanation of exactly the thought behind the desk - clean surface but with everything within arms reach when you need it - thanks Robert :)
You got my vote! That' for sure! Hope, that Ben, Chris and Mike will see it the same way!
Thanks!
This is exactly the idea I’ve been looking for. Great vid mate.
No problem, thanks for watching James!
Excellent design, execution and video, as usual.
Thanks Linday:)
It's been a while for me anyway, since I've seen you on UA-cam. I just wanted to extend a warm Merey Christmas to you and your family. I hope school has been well and I really appreciate your channel. God bless you. Neil
Thank you Neil - a belated Merry Christmas to you too - all the best for 2021 :)
Nice work and enjoyed the style of your storytelling.
Thanks mate, really appreciate it :)
Interesting design. Well done.
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey chief, love this build! Found you through the Modern Maker challenges, and sticking around for your obvious passion for craftsmanship in both wood and film. Hope you're well and still making - hope to see you back here soon.
Thank you, very much appreciated! Hopefully should be posting some new videos in the new year - just graduated and so I haven't had much time lately unfortunately.
Fantastic video as always Jake. Brilliant work. Keep up the great content!!
Thanks Mark!
I loved it! Can't wait for your next work.
Thanks Ambrosia :)
you are an artist !
Awesome work as always. Been a subscriber for a while. Enjoy the story telling as always. And thanks sharing my build in your playlist.
Thank you mate, and no problem at all, the more people that get to see yours and other peoples projects the better :)
Alway such interestingly solutions, Thanks @JMakes
Thanks George, appreciate you taking the time to watch :)
Brilliant
Thanks Andrew :)
It’s 10:31 that got me. Maybe I missed it earlier but the fact the legs fit into each other when flat-packed... It’s the thought about the whole design that is so impressive. It’s not just a table with a unique feature, it’s also that it’s incredibly practical. It bolts together very quickly and then disassembles into a package barely bigger than the table top. If you used a quick release locking pin or bolts with wings on for hand tightening (no tools required), added a carry hole in the table top and means of clamping the legs to it while in transit, then you’d have the ultimate go-anywhere instant table. Marvellous!
I would love to say I designed the legs to fit inside of each other but I was just as surprised when they did haha! But thanks Rob & nice ideas to make it a table better suited to transit; I think some sort of faster you could tighten by hand, or alternatively a place to store an Allen key within the desk, could work well.
Good work!
Thanks Alexander!
You‘re going to be in the top 3 🙆🏻♂️
We will wait and see but fingers crossed!
Your videos are the BOMB! Both in terms of the projects you make, the narration, explanation, filming and not the least editing which is phenomenal! Keep up the joy and good work, you are an inspiration of magnitude
Thanks Carsten! This means a lot, I really appreciate it :)
Nice build!
Thanks!
Inspired
Brilliant concept, video, and execution! When the table top popped into place with the legs, it was perfect! Love that detail! Keep grinding on, and thanks for sharing with us!
Thanks Jonathan, I really appreciate it!!
Simple, functional & stylish. Awesome job
Thanks Joey :)
First time seeing your videos, you have another subscriber. Great editing 👍
Great to have you as part of the channel - thanks Paul :)
Thank for the video JM. You could make a desk with all three storage slots. Left, right and back like you show separately. Your standard of making and finish is getting better all the time. Keep safe and stay well.
Thanks Colin + I was deliberating for a while about where to put the slot but ultimately thought having it on the side would give you more desk space, especially because I tend to put a laptop on the back and notebook at the front. I didn't mention it in the video but the table top is actually completely symmetrical so you can always flip the side it lies on too.
Although it would be nice to try out a long slot at the back, so you could fit store more books + I was also thinking about possibly making a stationary pot/sling.
You were doing so well with joinery that I cringed a little when I saw bolts. But, off course it's totally understandable if you want it to be easily disassembled. End product looks very polished. Props on milling your own hardwood. All in all, highly impressed.
Thanks Borys, I really appreciate it and yes it would have been nice to be able to keep to traditional joinery methods, but it had to travel a few hundred miles in the car so I thought it would be best if it could come apart - I did try and keep all the fixings hidden though in the final piece :)
Охрененно. Respect. Greetings from Omsk.
Great build great idea and a great video you have a gift sir a gift never stop doing what you are doing Fantastic job thanks for sharing your time and skill and remember#stay safe and make thanks again. 🍺🍺👍👍😷
So Beautiful and ingenious idea. You are truly becoming a master wood worker.
Thanks Jessie!
Awesome!!! Creative and so well thought out!
Thanks Dan :)
Great idea, that also looks good and so well executed 👍
Thank you Moritz!
Wena masterr!
Awesome ! Looks class, and to filming as usual, job well done
Thanks Thomas, really appreciate it!
Great work man. This is why I've subscribed long ago, and honestly these are the projects in which I think you thrive. Your cool ideas and great craftsmanship really show up in these projects, keep it up. Would love to see only wood joinery, but I can totally get that this is very convenient for assembly and disassembly. Again, great work and congrats.
Thanks so much mate, this really means a lot & yes it would have been great to have been able to glue up all the joints, but having it separate makes it a lot easier to transport and store :)
Beautiful work! I was just wondering the other day what you were up to.
Nice work. Would you make be able to make another one for sale? That desk would be ideal for me as well.
Hi Nam,
Definitely; please email me on jmakeswwmwaa@gmail.com - it would be great to be able to make a version for you!
Excellent build! So glad I subscribed way back. A lot of inspiration from watching you. If you are interested in all wood joinery that can be "knocked down", check out the tusk tenon joint if you haven't already. Keep it up, man!
Thank you Mike, really appreciate it & I will check that joint out :)
Bit of an odd question, but what boots are you wearing at 10:41?
They're Steel Toe-Cap Dickies (Reference number on the boot is FA23333) - hope this helps :)
Third
Slacking to say the least :(
