- The FBI has begun investigating the remnants of the Chinese spy balloon that was shot down after crossing over the United States and recovered from the Atlantic Ocean. Senior US officials say the parts found could be used as evidence in a future possible criminal case against groups linked to the Chinese military.

No doubt, even before it entered US airspace it was being monitored. It's just the fact that it became obvious to civilians and the media that it had to be dealt with in the way it was.
It would have probably been obseved, monitored and analysed long before it became a media sensation.
It WAS seen way before. It crossed over Canada too... But a couple of decades ago, we tried shooting one down with F-18s and 1000 rounds of 30mm cannon fire from a vulcan. It kept on flying. Those balloons are the size of two city buses... The gas inside doesn't burst into flames like in WW1 either. The F-22 they used this time had some Aim-9X missiles. Those could lock onto a big piece of floating fabric. The older sidewinders we had 25 years ago just couldn't... Or maybe it was the radars. But Anywhoo... It didn't work back then. It did this time...

"suddenly it took a strange turn south". There is a jet stream map that shows the constantly changing jet stream, this map is publicly available. Had anyone bothered to look at the jet stream map they could have seen that, indeed, the jet stream was bending sharply to the south. When the balloon made news that it was over Montana if you looked at the jet steam map you would have seen that the jet steam at that time was going in a very much south direction and then turned more easterly over the Atlantic states. The path of the balloon could be predicted and it's path did indeed follow what the jet stream map was showing at that time.
Jet streams are not found in stratosphere where the balloon was flying.
Radar don't detect balloons. Intelligence as to their location and altitude is gather by intelligence. They means it is located by the eyeball method. People see it and report it.

I'd say that information is pretty much flying around in the public wind.
This situation has actually helped train our defense network. The next time this happens we will be more prepared, which is important in case the balloon did have a potential weapon.

Anyone with the skill to search the web for Jet Stream maps could predict a potential time and place to launch something so that it would fly a nice curved course over much of the USA. Maybe it would terminate in the Atlantic or keep going for a pickup in the Indian Ocean or the South China seas.

The Pentagon's argument for not shooting down over land is rather specious as there is a LOT of areas in the CONUS where there little or no people on the ground, Montana is sparsely populated for example with plenty of empty areas there to shoot it down.
