He doesn’t hold the record for the Preakness, I’ve heard that he broke the track record that day but there was a problem with the timer or something like that? He definitely holds the track record for the Derby and the one that I think will stand forever is the Belmont. 2:24 is flat out flying for a mile and a half race!!! The closest to that record is a 2:26!?!

Greatest racing horse whom ever lived. The Belmont was watching the greatest race and racer of the century. It brought you to tears to see this magnificent horse racing with all of his heart leaving ordinary behind to enter monumental perfection.

God decided to create only one perfect horse and that horse was Secretariat. He still holds the record for all 3 triple crown races. In 2012 the racing authorities held a hearing to review his run in the Preakness, after all the reviews his time was changed to even faster so he now holds the record in the Preakness.
RIP BEAUTIFUL BOY YOU WERE AND ARE SO LOVED AND YOU TRULY ARE MISSED.

The greatest horse of them all. Consider that in the Derby not only did he set the record which still stands today, he ran every quarter faster than the one before it. Truly remarkable. It was only a foretaste of what was to come, culminating of course in that unbelievable Belmont Stakes when he destroyed not only the field (winning by 31 lengths), but the clock as well. He did the 1.5 miles in 2;24 - in the over 40 years since then no horse has even come close to that time. Indeed, I have heard interviews with Ron Turcotte (Secretariat's jockey) in which he claims that he was never really tested in any of the 3 TC races. That he could have won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in as dominant a fashion as he did the Belmont. I remember on the 1973 CBS broadcast of the Belmont one of the commentators after the race called Secretariat a "heavenly horse". He was right. Even if they are still doing horse races 10,000 years from now, no horse will ever rival Secretariat. We will never see his like again. Wow!!

Absolutely & unequivocally no doubt about it!!!! U are correct in ALL of ur points(words)....his winning time ⏲ in the Belmont Stakes will NEVER NEVER EVER be broken (2:24) flat over a mile & half dirt track ANYWHERE on this Planet, much less even come close to!!! the Second fastest winning time on that track and/or the Belmont Stakes is (2:26) flat Tied by Easy Goer(1989) & AP Indy(1992) !! and 3rd[technically 4th] fastest winning time is by his son Risen Star (1988) at (2:26 2/5) ... Bottom Line is: Judgement Day{Armageddon/the end of the World} will happen BEFORE (2:24 flat) is ever broken !!!! BOOK IT

That's why I love watching this race over and over again. I've NEVER seen any horse race with this burst of speed like it was straight out a fictional movie. It's absolutely incredible to watch him overtake every horse from the outside as if the other horses are racing in slow motion. "Superhorse" is really a well deserved title:-)

im all about moments of epic greatness in sports and this one transcends that... secretariat was certainly one of the greatest athletes of the last century WITHOUT QUESTION. i only wish i couldve been alive to witness this... to make the golden bear himself cry over a horse race is truly remarkable, and such a feat will perhaps never be accomplished again in the history of sports as we know it.

In 1973, I was 14 years old, and it was Secretariat that started me on my way toward my lifelong passion for thoroughbred racing!! There's an old saying that they save the best for last? Not in this case. Because he was the first horse that I ever started following his races, and I know I won't ever see any better again in my lifetime!! His 31 length Belmont Stakes victory is still the closest thing to perfect that you'll ever see anywhere on a racetrack.

He was just too good, too phenomenal to be real, at least in my mind. We need to promote racing somewhat in this fashion! Love it and need to let people know about how awesome it can be. Thats cool that you "get it" when it comes to that Belmont.
A lot of people have forgotten about horse racing, as its nowhere near as popular (atleast in US) as it was in the early to mid 1900s.
What amazes me most about the 73 Belmont is those fans that were touched that IN NO WAY, were fans of the sport.
This horse, in that year, was something special. Historic, but even cooler was that he was just something to root for.
Like I said, im glad you understand it was more. So cool.

I share your love of Seattle Slew. To think he died on 25th anniversary of his Kentucky Derby Win, w/his people in his stall with him. I cried, couldn't help it. Nack thought Slew cld likely have given Secretariat his greatest competition. "Slew is a monster."You should read Talkin' Horses on Blood Horses, the Nack Q/A interviews, 2005, 2006, 2007. Great reading.

It has to be Nack's bio. You can get it on Amazon or Ebay. I got it for $5.00 plus postage, new. The description is his races, esp. TC races is gripping. I also love The Hopeful, the description is surreal, and doing a 1/4 in 22 sec. He was big even as a baby, and had a huge appetite, a "big pumpkin of a colt, good natured not really interested in running in beginning, fascinating unfolding story. Woolfe's book is good too, w/add'l facts and info, beautiful pictures.

@catface1958 I have hoped as well, but I've always worried bec of Walt Disney production. For example, they have Penny and her children watching his birth like a happy family. They weren't even there. It was a cold rainy night, 3/30/70 just past midnight. Farm mgr Howard Gentry, was called to shed and he and stable emplyees brought Sec into the world. Nack describes it dramatically in a mere two page Chapter One. Other things worry me as well.

Some people say I only like Secretariat so well, because of the nostalgia of it. If it were nostalgia, I'd probably say Man-O-War was the best, but I don't. Secretariat was the best because the records prove it out. And, by the way, I did see it on TV in 1973, when I was 30 years old, so I remember it very very well indeed. @rscarbro100 .... you're right.... cruise control. Turcotte said he really cldn't tell how fast he was going. It was so smooth, relentlessly even, no faltering. He said once riding Secretariat was like steering a jet plane. TIME Mag said "he has a neck like a buffalo and a back the size of a sofa!"

  • @bon1042
    @bon1042 17 років тому

If you want to see what he does when Turcotte does that flick of the wrist and a pull on rt. rein to go to the outside, look at cf1970's Preakness Recap. The camera angle is rt. on Secretariat fm his rt. side so you see him leap and "take off like a flushed deer," as Nack put it. Turcotte only intended to begin positioning this red bullet, but he had other ideas.

It's true. He had the largest heart ever recorded in history. His heart weighed 21 pounds. The average weigh of a horse's heart is closer to about 13 pounds. Sham also had an unusually large heart. His was approx. 17-18 pds. The reason why Secretariat defied nature is that he was able to speed up during races...due to his enlarged heart which allowed him to pump more oxygen.

What's the music used at the very beginning of the piece? Does anyone know what soundtrack it came from, or was it an original composition?

@TheChoice264 The average horse's heart weighs about 8.5 lbs. There have been a few horses hearts that have weighed more. As far as I know, to date, Secretariat has had the biggest heart in a horse found, although there could be other horses out there that I dont know of :) Hope this information helps!

@Jailbirdx .... and it breaks your heart for Sham and it hurts to read Nack's description. Jockey behind Sham and Pincay could see Sham's legs getting rubbery at the 3/4 pole. That's when Secretariat started pulling away. Pancho Martin told Pincay to keep up with Secretariat. Sham never shld've run this race. He wasn't the same horse.
