GM lied about Pontiac having bad sales; it was the fact that they owed too much debt, they had to quickly ditch a few companies. Saturn, Hummer, Oldsmobile and Pontiac unfortunately. Pontiac was the only one out of them that was actually still selling pretty good up until the abrupt end in 2011.
Back in 2001 I bought a 2000 Grand Am sedan and had it for 10 years. It had 130,000 miles on it when I sold it and was a great car overall. The only major thing that had to be replaced other than normal maintenance items was a water pump. Other than that it surprisingly was a good car.
I bought a 2001 GA 2.4l in January 2012 with almost 177k miles. It now has 324300 miles, doesn't smoke, gets about 30 mpg and I have made a few mods. I have replaced a few things mostly from junkyards( alternator and ac compressor, 5 years ago, $25 and $35, and so on). My transmission was rebuilt for about $1200 , new synchros and other components. It has taken Arizona heat really well. No car payments.
You Arizona folks are lucky. Here in NY, they rotted away. Them cars would run, run, and run some more but the rust got to em. The LA1 V6 models suffered from lower intake manifold gasket failure due to the mixture of dexcool and subpar gasket material but that was a 3 hour fix.
@@williamsinger4124 Rust is not a problem here; heat is. If you don't take care of the cooling system, your engine could overheat really fast. Right now, we are seeing 115°F. I got rid of the orange coolant and am using an universal antifreeze.
I had wanted one back then in the GT1 package in that green color. I was a big fan of the Pontiac Grand Am ever since I was a kid in the 80s my dad first bought one in 1987 Grand Am LE sedan in white, and he pass it on to me in the year 2000 when I was 19 yrs old. I kept it and ended up buying me a 1998 Grand Am GT sedan in green with the perferated leather seats, 3100 150 Hp V6 and a sunroof in 2001. Then my aunt up and bought her a 2000 Grand Am SE1 in white before I bought the green one in 2001. Love seeing all three generations in my dad's driveway back then... Thanks Pontiac for the great memories!
My heart will go on for my old 99 coupe! Had the V6 and did some fast and furious mods to it since that was the trend back then. But the engine blew and I had to get rid of it. It was a peppy little car and the aftermarket exhaust I put on sounded great!
I still drive one today I have a 2004 SE2 model V6 engine. It’s dated but thats how I like it very simple to use and operate. AC still blows ice cold this car has the best AC I’ve every experienced in a car it gets very cold. Nice on those hot days. The acceleration kinda sucks it’s got weak acceleration but great torque. Once your moving and need to go just a little faster you can feel that torque kick in and it’s great. The handling in turns is fantastic the hydraulic steering and the cars N body design really helps with tight turns. If you gotta stop quick this car dose a great jump at that. Had a deer jump out in front of me when I was doing 55 and in about 5 seconds I was stopped I had to swerve to my stop to not hit the deer but again the handling was excellent. The design is good I like the back end look of the car the 4 reverse lights is a nice touch it really lights up the back end at night when you go into reverse. The sedan version which I have has plenty of leg room and head room in the backseat so the head room is probably slightly limited on the coupes.
I feel like if GM had tried harder to make their interiors feel higher quality, it would make their cars more desirable when people are choosing which car to get. It would probably help their image even if it doesn't matter now that the cars are very old and on the used market.
I've never really cared about their interiors frankly. All of the ones I've been In are the typical plastic, and vynal. My only real gripe would be poor layout, things like cupholders and pockets are not well designed.
@@BigWheel. I noticed a few broken things like the fold out cupholder, though it can be attributed to age on my old car. The buttons felt a bit cheap, mushy, so it reminded me it definitely wasn't an expensive car. (Like the window switches and turn signal stalk) I didn't like the cupholders either. They barely hold bottles, but they were the fold out design so that didn't help. But it was nice that they were placed farther forward than cars with the console mounted shifter. Ergonomic location!
@@BigWheel. Honestly I've never been in too many other modest cars so maybe the materials quality in GM is competitive. I thought a few door panels were thin feeling and actually could be shaken/moved when the windows went up or down, but my Buick had very little squeaks and rattles which was very good for a car that old. A portion of the door panel on my Buick actually started getting caught on the seats and pulling out whenever the door was opened. Really odd! I like GM cars though, I guess the interior not being the best is ammunition for people who don't like them.
I bought a 1999 Grand Am with the 2.4L in 2001 with 12,000 miles on it. Put an additional 215,000 on it. Motor had metal on the dipstick. Sold it (disclosed motor issues) and new owner did an engine swap from a junk yard. They put another 70k on it until they had an accident around 2013. They sold it, next owner fixed it. I heard a rumor it was riding around town still with close to 300k by 2019. That’s the last I heard about the car.
@@BigWheel. Those engines always outlasted the trans... My first car was a 1990 Buick Regal Gs and bought it with 240k miles on it. Ran like a dream. Put around 20k miles on it before I sold it for a few bucks and still ran good for another 20+k miles.
@taurussho86 the 3.4 had the intake gasket annihilation issues, they were easy to do tho. The cheap ass mirrors drove me wild on these 😂. Tbf at the time these came out most other makers were just as bad if not worse.
My first car was a 95' SE. It was 6 years old when I bought it. What a piece of shit that thing was. The ONLY redeeming quality was the Quad4 HO variant of the engine which was in the Oldsmobile Achieva SCX (Code named W41). They beefed up that little 4 cyl to 190HP (up from 150HP) in that variant without any forced induction.
My college buddy's Grand Am was an absolute POS and there was always this wobbly clunky sound in the rear, maybe one of the shocks or springs. Idk how it managed to last for those years.
The grand am was a real Pontiac compared to the G6,a failed attempt to replicate a European road car which equaled a cramped uncomfortable interiors and the grand am performance character.
My parents and I once rented a Grand Am from Avis. The agents told us it was the tomato red Grand am in the parking lot but when we got outside there were literally 7 tomato red Grand-Am rental cars. They had about 25 2000 grand-am's and seven of them wear that ugly tomato soup color. The Justice was that the other ones we're in really ugly colors too and that cheap plastic shit tacked on to the sides made the color look even worse and even less dignified. Overall some of them we're decently reliable but between the cheap plastic under the hood and a weird security system that turned the car into an electrical nightmare it's pretty much what killed many of the survivors off by now. Better than a Sonata but nowhere close to a Camry
These were notorious for engine gasket failures and warped rotors. Interior trims pieces were also of low quality. The oversized steering wheel and the slow steering ratio make sporty driving non-existent. Beautiful design though and ahead of its time but most ended up in the junk yard prematurely.
Depends where you lived. Where I live where it’s mostly dry I see these cars everywhere and in better shape then a lot of newer cars. But if I go a little north i see a lot of these cars all rusted and falling apart
That is true, mrslcom. I had to change mine at 80,000 miles, but once you change it from the factory one, you're good to go the life of the car. I flushed out that corrosive DexCool GM crap and ran with traditional green antifreeze from then on. Some people had gasket failures at 30,000 miles. I now have 240,000 on mine and still run like brand new. I've recently had to replace the factory radiator because it had a small crack on the side tank and I noticed i had to add antifreeze every 2 weeks. Oh and I had to clean out the EGR passages that was full of carbon because it would trigger the Service Engine Soon light every blue moon(P0404 code) but it didn't change performance when it came on.
The old tradition green coolant is time tested to be safe. Dex-cool is problematic especially with older engines. One way to get around the problem is to change it every 2-3 years instead of 5 and you’ll be fine. Coolant system leaks and prolong exposure to air causes it to go bad prematurely.

7.9 o-60. They felt faster than that. Always likes the Bonneville ssei. Lots of plastic buttons but was a cool ride
The rear cornering lights are really neat to have.

They are reverse lights the tail light and the bottom bumper lights come on in reverse.

True but then the car would cost more. They tried it’s like a soft dash leather kinda. The dash and doors are covered with it but it fails over time
