Thanks for a great video without all the extra nonsense that is not needed. Easy to understand and follow. This is my first time cooking rice in my PPCXL.
Hello my name Shirley and I AM RICE CHALLANGED!!! MY MIL made rice that could make the angels sing!! Fluffy...light and every grain seperate! She used regular rice and I remember that she rinsed it well, before AND after cooking ,then put it back in the pan to keep warm! I can't do it...can't make it without turning out a big sticky glob! BUT I DO HAVE A NEW PRESSURE COOKER!! HALLELUJAH!! 😁
Thank you so much Noreen for all your recipes using the pressure XL cooker. A lot of the recipes and videos are coming out with the Insta pot. I tried the rice and it was awesome. Thanks for sharing. Heather's got a few out there too that are pretty great. I enjoy all your videos
I’m gonna make some in my Presto stovetop pressure cooker right now with some chicken. If you haven’t tried a stove top pressure cooker yet, they’re nice. I like it better than my automatic electric one.
You answered the one question I was going to ask you. I cooked a ham yesterday and used the juice from it to make ham rice. I have a quart size bag packed with the leftovers, and was going to ask if rice is freezable lol. Thanks, Noreen! And again, love the video!
lovely video. loved to cook my rice in the oven but it came out so much better in the Pressure cooker. since I was a good one in the last year I got a multicooker with rice funktion from Santa. works great for all rice and all the other grains but just like with the Pressure Cooker it's so important to add that little bit of oil or butter if you do not want to clean a big mess. Again thank you for making all this lovely videos and thanks for sharing with us.
I have had my PC for many years and could not remember the measurements for the rice! Thank you. 👏🏽 I followed the Insta pot measurements and had too much water😳... yucky soggy rice. This is the PC I have so thanks again!
Thank you for explaining about the oil,you are the first person to explain why the oil is needed I always thought it was just to stop the rice from sticking does the same rule apply for pasta, I have just bought myself a pkp 6l.
Hi Noreen, I tried a recipe last week for bacon fried rice and it was amazing! It's a great way to use some of the leftover rice. If you'd like the recipe I used I can share the link. Have a great day!
Thank you for reminding me to use my Elite 10 qt for rice! I enjoy seeing you use this appliance. Blessings on you and yours, Noreen. With love from BanDana Gramma!
I did natural release. So there was no need to do that. I also instruct people to refer to their owners manual. Because not everyone has the same cooker
Steel Magnolias! My favorite movie!. I have a question. I've seen where some people rinse their rice before cooking and they say it changes the texture. Do you know the difference between rinsing and not?
I don't rinse my par cooked rice. I only rinse long grain rice. This helps to remove excess starches from the surface of the rice helping the rice to be separate when cooked. I do recommend that you rinse regular long grain, basmati, jasmine, Calrose and brown rices for this reason. Adding oil is also going to help the grains remain separate. I always add oil to my rice even when cooking on top of the stove. In the pressure cooker it helps to reduce foaming. On top of the stove it helps to keep the rice from being sticky.
You can use olive or coconut oil if you want a "healthier" option. The oil just holds the starch down so it doesn't bubble up and get in the valve in the lid. You can also rinse the raw rice for a couple of minutes until the water remains clear and that will also help keep the starch down.
Hay noreen I have a elite 10 quart pressure cooker I’m trying to find the replacement pot can you help me!I prefer the stainless steel pot or what ever
Hi, your rice looks great. I just got a nutri cook and the timer for rice is 13mins but my rice stuck to the bottom..was that too much time, should i adjust the timer?
+clint seiser this is something I have never done. You will need to consult your instruction manual or experiment. Since wild rice isn't really rice I don't think this conversion would apply. I also don't know that I would personally recommend cooking the delicate wild rice in a PC.
+clint seiser you know I did not realize this. Lol! Now I feel silly. But if they have a button. I suppose you could. That will teach me to be more observant! Thanks for pointing this out. I may have to give it a try.
Lol.. I'll have to try it too. Rice to water ratio is what I'm wondering. I know you used equal parts for white rice. I'm just curious if that would work for wild rice. Have a great day. Once again love the videos
Natural release is about = 15-20 minutes, but don't forget when its in natural release its still under pressure and its still cooking. For example, I boil potatoes in the pressure cooker for exactly 15 minutes and immediately after that I make a quick release, because there is no point in cooking the potatoes any more
i never thought I could make rice in a pressure cooker. Thanks. I cook on a my stove top but this is great when having company. One less thing to worry about. How about rice with Beans or mixed. is it the same or is this ONLY for white rice? BTW: I clicked on the bell and now I get EVERY NOTIFICATION about when you download but would you happen to know how I get subscribed to sites i don't want or wouldn't want like Mine craft? They show up every once in a while and have to do a clean up to delete.
I do not have a pressure cooker like that. Just an old one my Grandmother used to own. What is that one you are using called? I would like to buy one like that.
does it make a difference to the rice if you quick release the steam? Note: you can dehydrate leftover rice and use it as minute rice when you rehydrate it.
You will want to natural release the rice to allow it to steam just like when you cook it on the stove. I don't know that I would dehydrate leftover rice. I don't like minute rice because it has had all the nutrition removed from it so dehydrating leftover rice is essentially going to do the same thing. I freeze my leftover rice this makes a nice texture and the grains do not stick together. Additionally, re cooking leftover rice may leave it mushy and gross. Thanks for the comment.
Ashley no brown rice is different you will have to consult team instruction manual for your particular pressure cooker to find out how to cook brown rice in your model.
I have an insta-pot and the power pressure cooker XL and the insta-pot is my hands down favorite. It's a 6 qt. and does a great job and is faster than the XL for building up steam.
This is one where a PC doesnt seem to save time over stovetop for white rice. I have done brown rice a while ago and added cilantro and lime and OMG was it good. If i had some chicken it would be good.
Cooking rice at 9,000 feet altitude takes forever on the stove top. My Insignia wannabe Instant Pot makes it in 15-20 minutes, and perfectly every time. 👍
I think it depends on what type of rice you are using. If I were using long grain, arborio or Basmati rice, then I would most definitely rinse them as they tend to have a lot of starch on them when they come out of the bag. The rice I typically use for everyday applications is par cooked or converted rice and it is usually very clean and I don't rinse it. Hope that helps. Thanks for the question.
I found if I rinse my par boiled rice until the water runs clear, I don't have to add the oil to keep the starch bubbles down. I guess either method works but I prefer the less starchy taste of rinsed rice.
You have undoubtedly cooked a lot of rice on the stovetop. I just got a ppc XL and I am going to cook some rice in it just to see how it goes, but I have always cooked my rice in a lidded pan on the stove top and I really like the way it turns out. How would you compare stovetop rice to the ppc cooked rice?
Not all rice is created equal. That formula may work for regular long grain rice, however par cooked, short grain, Jasmine, brown, Wild, black, red and more types of rice require different ratios of rice to water. FYI.
I'm not to familiar with pressure cooking. Looks too much like a bomb on top of my stove. LOL However, it appears you don't have to wash the excess starch for your rice before steaming it. Cool!
Hello Noreen, I've been watching your videos for some time and have tried many of your recipes. I tried your potato roll recipe, and oh my goodness Don and I loved them so much that by now I have made them at least six times. When I start getting things out to make more Don is ready to help. He said the more help the sooner he can have them. No he does not wait for them to cool he dives right in. Ha Ha. Thank you so much for sharing . Blessings Carol
Yea, but you don't do rice in 6 minutes on your stove top. Pressure cooking rice is the easiest way to do it. If you ever try it you'll love it. Or are you just a troll?
Actually Frank it takes a little longer in the pressure cooker. In my electric pressure cooker, it takes 14min to come up to pressure, 7min to cook, and another 10-15min to depressurize. On the stove top, it takes me 18min total. So in reality, it's quicker on the stove top. Just saying....
I also have the Power Pressure Cooker XL. I have tried to cook rice in it several times and it never will come up to pressure for me..I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I tried again today. I was makinh jasmine rice. I used only 1 cup of rice and 2 cups of water with the oil. It wouldn't come up to pressure, so I thought I needed to add more water. I added another cup, but no luck. I never have a problem cooking anything else in it, but I hve tried numerous times, and it won't come up to pressure when I do rice. Do you have any ideas as to what I could be doing wrong? Your rice looks beautiful...
I don't know if it has anything to do with the lack of pressure thing, but rice in a pressure cooker is a 1:1 water to rice ration and not 2:1 like conventional since there is no evaporation to remove the excess water this way.
Even if you're not using a pressure cooker I STILL don't know why the package instructions say 2 parts liquid 1 part rice. That's mush! 1.5 parts liquid 1 part rice is plenty. They think we can't do simple math?!
Par cooked rice is 1.75 parts liquid to 2 parts rice otherwise it isn't enough water. I think that there are lots of ways to make rice. Some people don't even measure they just dump and cover the rice with water. You can actually drain the excess like you would pasta. There really isn't a wrong way to do it. The 1 to 1 is really reserved for pressure cooking due to the high heat and pressure that will cook the rice more efficiently than boiling.

pitcock lol. In all serious, thanks for the video! I just bought a pressure cooker and I'm intimidated to use it!
You are my hero!!!! I needed to make a large batch of rice on the quick, and this worked well. Liked and subscribed!
You emphasize the importance of oil adding the rice cooking. I like it. Thanks.
Thank you for your video. We were curious about the ratio of liquid to rice ...and after watching your video we had success!!
I used my pressure cooker to cook rice. Not same as yours but it made perfect rice. I love rice. Also live my pressure cooker as well. Thanks.
I used this method to make Paella!!! Added spices and seasfood. Soooo easy!!! Thank you!!🤗

You can freeze rice, but I have it on good authority that it is best to freeze while it is still hot otherwise it will be very mushy upon reheating.
Do you think it would work if I heat it back up and get it good and hot?
+azuquita07 Probably not. It had already been allowed to get cold. Reheating is going to break it down further. Of course I can guarantee nothing.

thanks for this Noreen! I've also heard that if you rinse your uncooked rice under cold water before cooking it washes away a lot of the starch.

I don't have an actual rice button on my pressure cooker so would I use hi or low pressure setting and the same 6 min?
YES, I HAVE A COOKS ESSENTIAL AND I USE HIGH ON 6 MIN FOR WHITE AND 10 ON HIGH FOR BROWN
The only thing I would add would have been how to take the pressure off. This was a wonderful video!! Thanks so much!!!
I did natural release. So there was no need to do that. I also instruct people to refer to their owners manual. Because not everyone has the same cooker
I love both my pressure cookers as well! Noreen thanks for the web site for the antibiotics, it's awesome!
Fluffy and separate, thank you!
‼️love rice in my power XL
Nice & easy 👌🏼
Also, cooking rice in a pressure cooker eliminates the lectins. 👍👍👍
Is it possible to use a more old school pressure cooker to cook rice like this?
Going to try it with my butter chicken today
Steel Magnolias! My favorite movie!. I have a question. I've seen where some people rinse their rice before cooking and they say it changes the texture. Do you know the difference between rinsing and not?
I don't rinse my par cooked rice. I only rinse long grain rice. This helps to remove excess starches from the surface of the rice helping the rice to be separate when cooked. No. Sea level

I don’t. Because I use par boiled rice. No need to rinse. I do not rinse any of my rice.

Thank you so much and thanks for the comment!
hi Noreen. For wild rice you also do equal amounts of water to rice? I have the 8qt. power pressure cooker Xl. Then set it to wild rice.

When you "come down from pressure" are you recommending a natural release, or a #quickRelease?
