Switched out my 7inch radio for a donor 8.4inch radio from a totaled JLU. What you need is the donor VIN and the SN on the 8.4inch radio. With this, a helpful CDJR dealership can give you the Theft code. The 8.4 is so much better in sound quality and has extra features. I totally recommend the swap. Super easy.

If you have the 5” just order the dash cluster while you’re at it and volume works like normal. It’s super easier to swap out
How much does the dash cluster sell for?

DO NOT LEAVE THE THEFT CODES ANYWHERE INSIDE OR ON THE VEHICLE!!! If someone does break into the car and happens to know what they are looking for you might as well have taken the radio out and shipped it directly to their house with 1 day shipping.
Alpine just announced a Jeep JL restyle head unit at SEMA that will likely be better that the Uconnect. Just throwing it out there as an option for anyone looking to upgrade their system.

One more thing, if you’ve upgraded from seven to an 8.4, as long as you have the security code then that 7 inch unit can be installed as a 5 inch upgrade to somebody else they’ll just need to enter the security code and by the volume control module that accompanies the 7 inch radio.
What are the main differences between 7 & 8.4 besides nav and obviously size?
For 5.0 folks... Pretty sure you can also order new controls to re-add the volume knob to the center console. The assembly contains everything from the ignition button over. Then the climate controls should be moved to the screen, if I’m not mistaken. Pretty cool upgrade if you didn’t get the tech package!

JeepInformant I have not upgraded- yet. Still looking into it and I remember reading about it on a JLWrangler forums thread. After skimming through the thread, my original comment may be mid-information actually. It looks like people identified the part number for a ‘Control AC switch’ or something but I’m seeing some posts about the parts not working together correctly.

Hey, could you make a video about the rubbing that a lot of people feel when engaging the clutch on the JLUs? I’ve been having this problem and read on the forums that I’m not the only one. Furthermore, I took It to the dealers and they don’t know what to make of it either.
So you've been driving this with the 8.4" for a while... are there any features you're missing or had to do extra work to add? I read that you don't get Off-Road pages or GPS... but since you registered it at the dealership, I wonder if you're getting the full benefits. (I presume you're in a Sport since no locker/disconnect buttons on the dashboard.)
If you upgrade to the 8.4 nav do you then get the off road pages.
This video is somewhat misleading because it’s old information. The radios are interchangeable from Jeep to Jeep as long as you have the unlock code. It will work fine.
The issue will come when you want to add accessories. The Jeep will not cycle power to the radio properly, and it will not play music. You have to do a reset on the radio for it to work, or shut off the Jeep, lock the doors and wait 10 minutes till the Jeep shuts its electronics off.
if you have the built in aux switches will the 8.4 upgrade still allow you access to the custom settings for those switches
I made the switch. 7 to 8.4 and NO extra cost involved after installation at the dealer. The radio worked right out of the box. The sales code is added before the radio is shipped from Infotainment. They also allowed me to trade in my 7inch and credited me 300.00.
How do they have the ability to add a sales code? The sales codes can only be added by an authorized dealer. The sales code is added to your build and then flash/update your configuration into your Jeep your Jeep then communicates to the features. Its not the other way around.
I've contacted 6 dealerships in the Tampa area and not one will do this. They state if the vehicle did not come with the 8.4 they cannot just add the sales code.
Do you know another way around this?
I have the JL with the 5" infotainment system and it's absolute garbage when it comes to remembering the last song I was on before turning the Jeep off. It's really frustrating and Buying a better flash drive didn't seem to to fix it.

I just bought a 2018 compass but need to replace the USB port in the front console. I have found the part online, but I am not finding any videos on how to replace it. Does it just pull out by gently prying it out or do I need to remove the console?

same procedure, if you buy the 8" info unit, from a salvage yard wrecked JL...? Change the wrecked 8" vin# to your vin# possible..? Great JL channel, subbed and always a thumbs up!.... What do I win, if I stump you?

I am having trouble getting my Android note 8 and the Android Auto to work with the 8.4 uConnet in a 2019 Jeep JL. Service department told me to get with my salesman "they are the ones trained". There sales guy could not figure it out and suggested setting up an appointment with service. ?... I am getting a security error on my phone (I think it is error 8 - connect verify software security issue?) I have also noticed that the clock does not get update b y the GPS even though that option is turned on. Sounds like I need a software reset but I need a service appointment to reboot a computer? What if it happens again, another appointment...? Any help from the community would be appreciated.
I can’t imagine any dealership doing what this upgrade requires.

I was looking into this...but two 8.4 radios in grand cherokees were at the dealership and both couldnt get their radios to even turn off, had to pull fuses. Makes me vary warry...my base 5 is the worst radio i have EVER had in any car truck....grandmas old boom box in the attic. im on my third radio from jeep and i have no faith it will ever work normally, they don't know what their doing. Also another point, is there a reason why i wouldn't just buy off a mopar parts site, i can get a new radio cheaper and instant plug and play no programing since it's brand new..what does infotainment offer as an advantage?

Hey I'm Ahmed i have a jeep gladiator and the radio it had was 7 inch. I bought a radio that's 8.4 inch. The navigation and the xm isn't working because I don't have the ID number. When I went to the dealership it told me that I need the ID number and when I contacted the seller he told me he doesn't know the number. So is there any way I can solve my problem? If the salesman said: 'No you can't upgrade the bigger stereo.' then tell him to turn around after that kick his ass and tell em get the hell out. Because it is n option before you want to buy the Jeep. There is that option when you do build your Jeep in the website.

What about no Sirius XM and adding the new antenna? Or adding the nav antenna? Is the AC controls swappable for us tiny screen guys?
If your current radio did not come with Sirius XM, you will need to add the Sirius XM/Navigation antenna if you want to use that option on the new Sirius equipped radio. The Mopar part number is 68293949AA for the antenna and 5064159AG for the extension Cable. This antenna is an all-in-one Navigation and Sirius XM antenna. If you are upgrading to the 8.4" and want to use the wifi/LTE functionality, you will need to pick up that antenna part# 68293962AA.

Why does the Chrysler dealership tell you it can't be done? Kind of scary cuz I don't want to mess up the electrical system. I have a 19 Dodge Journey and they told me I could upgrade the screen size when I bought it and then they said I can't after I asked them a few months later to upgrade it. Its highly nerve-wracking cuz I would like the bigger screen rather than that little chintzy 4 inch screen it has. As the old saying goes if it ain't broke don't fix it. I just don't want no coulda woulda shoulda. Especially I don't want it to avoid my warranty. Or even worse be stranded on the side of the road with a broken car all because I had to mess with the screen size. I'm incredibly confused

A ton of people have made the upgrade just by ordering the radio and bezel from a parts site. Everything I'm seeing says this method has been plug-n-play. What are they losing by doing that? The only thing they're not getting is the updates, but I'd imagine they wouldn't get that with the infotainment version either.
No they won’t get update. Any option that the vehicle has maybe that can be controlled through the radio. I have not actually tried one. I would like to just to prove you don’t have to. But it makes sense that you would. Also. It carry’s the factory 3year 36,000 mile warranty if you add the sales code.

Just upgraded the wife?s JLUR from a 7. Infotainment configures the radio to your vin so no visit to the dealer needed (other than to simplify future warranty issues thru the dealer). And as for updates, the dealer can still perform or you can do them yourself at http’//driveuconnect.com/software-update, Just punch in your vin and download to a flash drive (4Gb or larger). The drive plugs into your USB port in the Jeep, instructions are onscreen. FCA also makes a support video available via their UA-cam. The only feature not available if you upgrade vs purchase with the vehicle is the Sirius Guardian feature. All other functions and features are fully operational.

jordan foster So according to the jl forum, we would need the hvac control cluster as well. Although if memory serves me right you can control hvac from unconnect. So if you wanna do it the right way, 7in or 8.4 and the hvac control cluster if you want it complete.

DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE TO DEALER AND REPROGRAM. Infotainment sends a bypass and module that does it for you. !! Pretty important.

As long as you have the theft code I think it would work. Not 100% though. It would be a good test.

Dude, you are so wrong. I just ordered mine from Mopar for way less money than infotainment or extreme terrain, or any of the other aftermarkets. And it was simply plug and play.

Unconnect 7.0 is utter Garbage 🤦♂️ everytime I have to start the car I have to do like 8-10 touches for the screen to connect to Bluetooth 🤦♂️
