Welcome back ! Check out this cell modem battle to see which device performs the best ! Please leave a comment and let me know what else you like to see!
Are you getting open nat types with these devices?
@@calebwalker756 I get Nat 2 which works fine with my PS4
Thank you for the review! Which plan would you use with the Verizon/ mofi? Will a straight talk plan work, to my understanding, it's basically Verizon
It was cool how you switched the carriers to test them out good review and good job showing the performance
Straight G
Thank you SO MUCH for these videos. Literally the best information I've found on this subject period. My challenge was attempting to get rural service that has a equal upload and download speed for work. 25 up 25 down 😔 the struggle was real. Thank you again.
TheCosmicSerpent thank you for watching!
Cosmic, did you succeed in reaching 25 up? How far are you from a cell tower?
great video! very helpful! i think i'm going to go ahead and pick up the mofi.. seems like the best all around buy and the support for external antennas also looks pretty clutch. love the editing on this vid dawg! straight to the point with a little bit of flair! PEACE
Here for exactly what I was looking for. Caught my attention with Cap in the elevator. Subbed when I saw you're in NJ...greetings from Brick.
I've been using a Verizon AC791L for the last few years as internet in my house. Looks like I'm ordering a Mofi.
Quality content man. I know im late but im sitting here with all 3 devices trying to figure which to use
Thank you for making this so simple for me. Truly a great help for someone like me that isn't that technically inclined 😁
awesome video, now i have a few questions. what’s your opinion on the netgear lm1200? i’m trying to find a way to have a stable internet connection out in the country. i like to game, and stream my tv, and no internet providers are able to come out where i live. would the lm1200 be a good resort?
Don't know much about the LM1200 but if you get a decent signal with any of the carriers , I'd start there to determine which carrier has the best signal where you live then you should find an unlimited data plan, then you can choose your cell modem/router
This is a great bake off. Thank you for the awesome info! I have a dumb question because I’m such a noob on this. So did you have to setup another unlimited line with AT&T and Verizon to get this going?
Deanna Srno nope I used the ones I have just swapped the SIM cards between the routers...funny story ......I almost bricked my Verizon SIM card in the nighthawk trying to force it to use band 4 but luckily worked with Verizon to get the card back working .
lol, I love the beginning. I bought the 3rd one to use with the T-Mobile home internet service.
Thank you for your help, I cut the wire from my internet service and I'm happy with what you suggested I get.
No problem brother ! Enjoy your internet!
Hey bro. I'm in an RV using a Mofi 4500 with a AT&T plan. I spend most of my time in Verizon territory an would like a better plan. Can you recommend a plan and the settings to use (I'm not that tech savvy)? Thanks Marvin
Awesome video..I setup a unlocked mf279 with lmr400 wires connected to 2 Wilson yagi antenna on AT&T...How can I tell if I'm using/getting carrier aggregation??
I'm not sure ....one of my neighbors has that router with AT&T's 100 GB plan from what I've experienced going over to help them it's interface isn't that user friendly. And sadly there's no carrier aggregation with this device as it's only a category 3 modem
Great job
Ty Demaree Thanks Bro!
Hey man nice video and review! I was wondering what is your average ping with these? Could play online gaming with them?
@Blake Jones my average ping with Verizon is 35 to 50 with At&t its 50 to 65 and yes you can absolutely Game with this
Hey I need help, I live in a rural area and the only carrier I get reception out here with is Verizon. And I’m a couple miles away from the closest Verizon tower. And I’m confused on whether I should get the night m1 or mofi 4500. And I was reading your comments and noticed you said your neighbors swapped your mofi 4500 sim 7 for there mofi 4500 sim 4 and now they don’t have a throttled Verizon connection now. So does that mean I need to get a mofi 4500 sim 7 instead of the sim 4 version. And also should I get my SIM card and plan from the website you said called “visible”?
I would definitely recommend the MOFI sim 4 version over the sim 7 (my neighbors are using a pre paid phone plan straight from Verizon if you get a visible sim ( need a phone to activate the sim) you can use the sim 4 and you won’t have to worry about being throttled to 2G speeds. Visible is a subsidiary of Verizon and they offer unlimited hotspot data ( off of the phone ) but if you swap the sim in a cell router and change the apn to vsblinternet you can use it that way as well
Nice video! I just got only the cheap and fo free mobile hotspots from T-Mobile TEST DRIVE programs. Lol. Only on LTE with the 2.4Ghz
Amazing!
Good video!
Thank you!
Hey does this use your mobile hotspot to run this device
I have a VZ prepay and it connects but can't get internet connect out of Lan out of the Ethernet. Do I have to change IP addresses or use the DMZ feature?
What model # are you using? You may have to enable IPPassthrough to tether the data on the M1
Excellent
Does the Nighrhawk M1 and LB1120 count towards hotspot usage on Verizon? I have seen that the Mofi can change ttl to avoid being seen as hotspot and therefore avoid throttling. I need to know if these modems count as hotspot usage because it wouldn't be worth it for me to get one then because after 15 gb of data that it sees as hotspot, it would slow down to 600 Kbps.
The only way to avoid the throttle is to attach a router to the M1 or Lb1120 that has TTL settings and have your devices connected to that router
@@profitgee1 Ok thanks!
WHAT was that intro?! Hahaha. And props to the faux-primo beat and pete rock beats in the background.
Thanks for all the good information. I’m wondering if you could share the Verizon prepaid settings for Mofi. And are you using Mofi SIM 4 or Mofi Sim 7?
Im using the sim4 swapped the sim7 with one of my neighbors because their verizon prepaid was throttled on the sim 4 but worked on the sim 7
bERRy gOOd jUICe Thank you. That’s really good to know. Are there any settings that could help to setup the sim 7? Like, are you using standard or generic firmware, or the APN value, or the TTL setting? I have heard that the TTL setting should be 64 for Verizon? Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it
Miguel C. The TTL for Verizon should be 117 At&t and T-Mobile use 65 TTL vzwinternet is the apn and just make sure you have the latest mofi firmware if you get the sim 7 ..check out LTEhacks.com there are a lot of helpful and way more knowledgeable (than I am) folks on there that can help and answer questions about routers I just built my own router using Ltefix.com and LTEhacks I’ll try to have the vid up by the end of the week
bERRy gOOd jUICe That was super helpful. Thank you so much! I can’t wait to see the video
bERRy gOOd jUICe I checked the websites that you shared, and they are very good. I noticed one thing about activating a Verizon prepaid SIM card and I could not quite find the answer in the site. How did you activate the Verizon prepaid SIM card? Did you activated in a regular phone and then put it in the Mofi? I’m asking because some folks are saying that Verizon seems to detect when the SIM card is used in another device. Thanks for your help!
I’m thinking about getting the Mofi router but I have a few questions. I use Verizon, what do I need to do to get a SIM card that will make the router truly unlimited and not get throttled by Verizon? One more question, why would Verizon throttle the plan in the first place? Thank you so much for the vid, it was honestly the most helpful one I’ve watched.
Verizon along with all the cellular companys aren’t offering truly unlimited plans that aren’t for phones at the moment but if you have a post paid phone plan you can add a tablet plan to it and swap the sim into the mofi the TTL settings can help mask the data to look like it’s on the tablet instead of a router however the imei # will still show Verizon which device you are actually using I have 2 neighbors that are using the tablet plan, one is in the mofi the other is in the M1. The mofi has TTL but shows the imei the M1 has a the tablet’s imei but no TTL and both are working fine. The cell company’s manage data so they can avoid congestion on the cell towers and service the most customers rather than a few that use a lot of data.
Thank you so much
I live in an urban area. I’m looking for a cellular modem to automatically kick in to backup my nest guard if my wifi cuts out. Are any of these good choices for me? I’m with Verizon.
@Dan Stelluto depending on which bands you have on verizon I recommend the Mofi but I also recommend checking out LTEfix.com where you can build a modem for less $
bERRy gOOd jUICe I have bands like Aerosmith, Guns ‘N Roses, etc 😂. Seriously tho, I have no clue. Thanks for the link. I’ll check it out!
The speeds of the mofi are great, but how does it perform in the house with only 2.5 ghz and no 5 ghz signal
Dexter Russell I only use it as a modem because of its wifi limitations ....even in this video I have it connected to another router that has both the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies
Hey bERRy gOOd JUICe, I have the mofi sim 7 using t-mobile service. Download averages 25 and upload averages 50. I have 2 external antennas connected to the mofi, is there setting changes I can apply to enhance my upload speeds? Thanks.
Sanny Catubo let me get this straight.....you want to improve your 50Mbs upload speed? That’s already a great upload speed for LTE! The sim 7 has a cat 4 modem so there is not much you can do to improve your speeds outside of having external antennas and dialing them in to the tower because cat 4 modems don’t have carrier aggregation. Your upload speed is already awesome in my opinion.
bERRy gOOd jUICe my bad, I meant down load speeds. I know typically download is faster then upload maybe there was something I could adjust. Thank you..
What At&t plans are you using? And is it truly unlimited?
Only using 1 AT&t plan and I don't go over 400 MBs / month because it's a retired plan and I'm grandfathered in and At&t has been canceling plans left & right for excessive data usage
Hii .. I got a netgear 4g lte modem and router and the unlimited straight talk and it says not connected to internet.. is there something I'm doin wrong? Help plz
Well for starters you got a straight talk SIM card not sure if that will work in the modem you have , check the SIM card on your phone and see which network (carrier) it’s using .../if it’s Verizon the apn should be “vzwinternet “, if it’s AT&T it should be “broadband” and T-Mobile’s is “T-Mobile US” ....SETI the apn on the modem to the correct carrier by logging on to the modem’s interface ...hope it works for you
Am living in a place in the middle of no where my phone hotspot am getting 1.2 mbps download and 1.0mbps upload and can't get any internet provider in my location. But would one de sim router boost my speed up a little bit I don't except same speeds what I see in this video
@vinny woods Sounds like you’ll need some external antennas along with a cell router to get better speeds check out my other video on basic setup ...ua-cam.com/video/n-JGTw6A7Vc/v-deo.html
Hi I have been trying all day to get my net gear m1 to connect with the sim the SIM card needs to be activated and the broadband doesn’t work what do I do
First off what carrier /plan do you have for your SIM card ? Some Sims need to activated in either a phone or tablet then after it’s activated you can put it in the M1 . If the M1 is unlocked it will try to connect automatically but you may have to set the APN manually, then you should be able to use the broadband on the M1
So which is best for a rural area. Netgearnight M1 or Mofi 4500 to use as home internet for working at home and streaming everything? I bought an Att unlimited plan through Nomad and I have an ATT tower literally right in front of my home.
Randi Clark if you get a good signal and don’t need external antennas the nighthawk will give you great speeds ! The Mofi or any open wrt router for that matter is better if external antennas are needed (the Ts-9 ports on the M1 suck!) and you are using a data plan that needs Ttl settings or a vpn as the open wrt routers have more configuration options. Really depends on what’s more important to you....M1 will probably give you better download speeds but a mofi may give you more options if you ever change data plans
bERRy gOOd jUICe thank you. That helps. You have great videos.
Randi Clark thank you I really appreciate that!
Randi Clark how is Nomad Internet working for you so far
So in regards to the LB1120. I currently have Verizon phone service with an unlimited plan. Do I simply add another phone or tablet to my plan and take the sim card outta that and install it in the LB1120?
Try to add an unlimited tablet plan rather than adding a phone plan Verizon is more likely to catch a phone sim in the router than it is a tablet sim
@@profitgee1 Thanks for the quick reply. Is that what you used in the video? I'm new to this kinda stuff and I'm trying to get some clear information on what the simplest method of getting household internet over 4g would be.
@@raehorrell4160 no I used a (grandfathered) unlimited verizon hot spot plan sim in this vid but i set my neighbor up with a tablet plan they added to their post paid account
What plans are you using? ATT just kicked me off of the Data Connect Pass so I’m searching for another unlimited SIM card plan. Any thoughts?
Justin Pohleven I use that At&t data connect plan ...by Grace It hasn’t been canceled for me but I’m mindful how much data I use on it ...I don’t go over 300GBs for the month for that plan. My Verizon plan is retired now it’s the $65/month unlimited hotspot plan. Right now I can only recommend Visible if you want to use the Verizon network (network management may affect performance) and if you want to use At&t I recommend getting a post paid phone plan and adding an unlimited tablet plan to it and s putting the sim into a mofi or any router that allows the TTL setting to be changed .
It’s always best to have at least 2 plans if you are using LTE for home Internet because the GBs can add up quick!!!
You can use an existing phone sim from att.. or add a line to a cheap phone you might have extra.. only on the mofi or a unit with ttl settings..
Att post paid iPad plan, 20$
Go on ebay and find a seller with great feedback and buy a at&t unlimited enterprise plan sim card..Usually around 100$ month .. 100% no caps after 22Gb...you can use 400Gb a month without a problem..don't go over 400..its the best for the middle of nowhere place I'm in
I'm using visible as cell provider for my netgear & it stopped working today randomly, anyone else having this problem?
I experienced something similar on the nighthawk with my Verizon pre paid unlimited jet pack plan. I had to get on the phone with Verizon for half the day to get my sim working again after that I never put it back in my nighthawk again.... just in my mofi or my custom router
@@profitgee1 I just took the sim out the machine & put it in my phone & put it back in the machine & it was good!
hi friend does the m1 still works on verizon no data throling
Data throttling is done by the carrier/ isp not the device
I bought an LB1120 last night, am I going to need a router as well to connect my playstation to it? Idk what I'm doing
If all you want to connect is the playstation you don't need a router however if you want to connect multiple devices you will need a router or a Ethernet switch
@@profitgee1 Awesome, that's what i was hoping to hear. Any recommendations for the router if i go that way Thanks? Thanks for the knowledge and videos man!
Hey bud what company sim card are you using? Just bought one & dont know what company to go with that will allow it
Daniel Truce I’m using plans that are both retired now with Verizon and At&t There are alternatives tho you can get a visible activated SIM card (compatible phone required to activate) and put it your cell router or check out resellers like Nomad wireless
@@profitgee1 when you say visible activate you mean purchase a phone & use that sim card, correct?
I purchased Lb1120 today that's why & I wanna get it connected same day I get it & just wanna know the basics of how to activate it , tbh I rather use what you call invisible then nomad at least with invisible I'll be paying same as nomad a month but getting a phone out of it Lol
Daniel Truce you don’t necessarily have to buy a phone if you have an iPhone that can use Verizon you can use that to activate visible
@@profitgee1 can you explain what visible means then? Please this is really helpful bro
I'd like to see a build video on the new toy berry!!
Ty Demaree as soon as I get it I’m gonna post it #ruralinternetnerd lol
Ok any updates on the new cat 20?
Ty Demaree it’s already built and I’ve been testing it ....gonna try to get the vid up as soon as possible haven’t had a day off from my regular 9-5 so it’s been kinda hectic
My BEC 6300NEL modem quit working 😭
Sorry to hear that....from what I can gather that’s a cat 6 modem and for the price I would build my own from Ltefix or get a Mofi
If I get a nighthawk m1 and change imei number can I use my phone SIM card?
Yes. But you will need to use an attached router w/ TTL settings to mask the data usage if you have a phone plan with limited hotspot data.
@@profitgee1 do I still need the router if my phone plan is unlimited data without hotspot. I don’t have hotspot in my plan ???
Also I have a aris surfboard router modem sb8200 how do I see if it has ttl?
@@profitgee1 ??
@@tyressy01 not sure I’m not familiar with that router it could be in the firewall settings
Is your Verizon sim truely unlimited & if so where do I get the service
Bad NightHawk790 my Verizon Sim is truly unlimited but it retired May 2019. The good news is many people are using Visible (phone needed to activate ) and are getting unlimited service and I set up one of my neighbors with a Verizon pre paid phone plan that’s been working for them (in a MOFI sim 7) for the last 5 months. The other factor depends on how busy your tower is because all of these plans are deprioritized so if you are in a more populated area you may see your speeds slow down if the tower gets congested from time to time
bERRy gOOd jUICe I thought the way to avoid being throttled was to lock in the band
aguiremedia locking to one band won’t stop the carrier from throttling your speed if your plan doesn’t have unlimited data but it can help you get optimal speeds depending the performance of the band
@@aguiremedia I'm using visible it drops to 5mbps after you pass their data cap I'm assuming but tbh it's still better then nothing, all unlimiteds are usually really data cap in fine print. I use hulu Netflix UA-cam no problem all the time of the day .
yo bro I have a IMEI number. how do i get a sim card with that?
Go to LTE hacks, register and type in $20 AT&T data only sim , there are detailed instructions on the forum
The best cheapest 4g LTE is Visible wireless. They have don't have those speeds, but they have unlimited 4g LTE for $25/month!
What the speeds like? I'm considering trying
@@User_1795 You can't beat Visible wireless for what you get for the price! But look up "fcc ebb phone program" right now many people can get free $50 every month towards phone or internet service because of the recession/pandemic. That can be applied to most service providers, including Verizon, AT&T, and others.
Can you port forward and game on this modem. What is latency like?
Yes you can port forward on the Mofi and the M1 the latency with Verizon is 35-45ms the At&t latency is about 50-80. With LTE the latency will depend on the cell tower and which bands / carriers are available in your area so latency may vary
@@profitgee1 let me guess no way to find out about tower and band till you buy??
@@mackelby1 check out my other video ...the basics it talks about apps you can use on your phone to locate cell towers and bands available in your area
And you can check latency on your phone
@@profitgee1 dah!! Is it Monday?!? Lil. Thanks for quick response.
Well I get the best speed from the m1, lb1120 is a distant second, mofi is very slow.. all on att. 40 to 60 on m1, 12 to 25 on lb1120, and 2 to 4 on mofi sim 4..
@Ty Demaree...Just curious ....which bands are you using and if the mofi was carrier aggregating with 2 bands?
@@profitgee1 I've only got signal on band 12.. band 4 is strongest, but won't connect to internet.. I'm using a sim from att phone plan. It's a mofi sim 4.
Ty Demaree band 12 by me is only 10mhz and doesn’t have great speeds but it’s the strongest band also band 2 (20mhz) has better speeds but has a weaker signal. My mofi uses both with carrier aggregation but like you my nighthawk performs better just not as much of a gap in speed as you
What router do you recommend
Daniel Reeves it depends on which carrier you’re using ....any open wrt router build your own through LTEfix or if you don’t want to do that get a Mofi sim 4 version for At&t or Verizon if you use T-Mobile than a mofi sim7 because of band 71
Will you help me find an unlimited plan
@@profitgee1 att is the best where I live but all they offer is a 30gb plan
Daniel Reeves if you want to use At&t try Bix wireless ...they are a reseller that offers an unlimited plan on At&t
I'm thinking LB1120 for me... i just want to play PS4... I cancelled my satellite internet... what a scam. Going to do a 3rd party deal and hope it works
I feel you, satellite isn't meant for gaming. I didn't know anything til I experience it and learned the hard way about latency and data throttle. Satellite sucks. Mobile hotspot for the win for gaming in rural areas with no good internet.
That's good for play warzone?
Yes it is
4500!
This video is interesting to see, but kinda pointless. See, the nighthawk absolutely is a better device because it has a higher category modem inside of it and 4x4 mimo built in. I don't think you can lock in band with it though which makes it kinda tricky for more rural consumers looking to get a home internet solution.
The mofi on the other hand is more decent for rural users due to it's ability to lock on to bands as previously stated and seen in the video. It had 2x carrier aggregation and 2x2 mimo and a lower category modem. The SIM4 model has a category 6 modem for reference here. Also the back LAN ports limit possible speeds to about 100 mbps per connection and the wifi isn't the greatest either. MY BIGGEST ISSUE with the mofi4500 is the fact that you can easily build this router for less if you buy the parts and a MUCH stronger router for equal or a little more money. Personally I am building a WG3526 router with a quectel em20-g modem. It will be a category 20 modem with 4x4 mimo, up to 7x DL carrier aggregation and i believe 3x UL carrier aggregation. I can also use it to lock on to bands just like the mofi. All that being said, the mofi4500 SIM usually runs for about $312-$350 depending where you get it. This build I am making costs about $430 and will MAJORLY out-perform the mofi and the nighthawk (given my rural setting ) You also have to include the cost of antennas for it and cables for the antennas, but it's a cost I am more than willing to make! Definitely check out ltefix.com and the ltehacks forum. It's full of info for people who want good internet through cellular applications!
@Steven Pope you can lock the M1 to bands of your choice check out my previous video ....and the nighthawk is a superior modem than the mofi but that doesn’t mean it will perform better in all situations or areas or for all carriers for that matter it simply lacks the band support to out perform the MOFI in my area on Verizon.
Ya lte fix is great, I am thinking about building a mofi clone, with rooter firmware, for about 200$ ish..
Ty Demaree let me know how the firmware works out because I’m considering building one too just worried about firmware glitches and making sure the modem’s firmware is compatible with the router’s and it’s sim card slot.
@@profitgee1 I'm building a CAT20 tomorrow
@Steven Pope let me know how every thing goes! I’ve got everything in my shopping cart for the cat 20 only difference is I’m going to use the Nexq6go router and make all 4 sma connections for LTE antennas for the 4x4 MIMO and I wouldn’t use the router for wifi anyway ...I have a mesh system. Excited for you bro!
I'm capped at 5mbps fuck it it's still better then viasat 😂 I'm at 5mbps download & 5mbps upload ping at 100.. my viasat is 30mbps download & 1mbps upload ping at 600. In case anyone has ever considered going to viasat .. this is your best option . My nieces had so many problems doing online school with viasat & with this one they have no issues at all. Using VISIBLE as my sim card provider
Brah !!!
I get the same speeds... 40/50mb download on cable in Germany !
WTF ?... and costs me 55 euros/month
Better switch to 4g router...
Gotw3 bad router I got Verizon and it slow a shit
Please kill the background music. I can't understand you.
gotcha the music is too loud . I've gotten better with the sound levels , work in progress....
Band 13 is a horrible main band! Try band 5 as your main band with 66, 2, and 4 bands. All of then bands are split bands where 13 is all right next to itself frequency wise. Higher the frequency with shortest antenna cable "1FT long ant wire w/modem mounted 60FT up run w/POE injector works best" Please for the love of god if modem has TS-9 for the connector CUT THE SMA OFF and solder on TS-9 end w/short wire and you will thank me later on when you have crazy speeds in the boonies 13 miles away from tower. Oh another tip for night from ground, don't point it threw tree's go over them. Higher Frequency Cell signal hate tree's but love fresh wide open clean air to punch threw.
Doesn’t Band 5 have to be available in my area in order for me to use it? I have bands 4,13 and 66(as an extension of band 2) as far as Verizon bands and I agree band 13 is horrible for data the wider frequency bands perform better. Thanks for the tips as far as antennas go and the outside modem enclosure with POE
Why the annoying music!!!!
Why the annoying comment ? I like Hip-Hop, if you don’t, that’s cool ....thanks for watching anyway
