As gen z I can definitely say situationship and dating are not the same. For example imagine a girl and a boy who like each other. One day, the girl asks, So, I’m not your girlfriend and you’re not my boyfriend, right?'
The boy says yes.
Then the girl continues, But you don’t want me to see other people, and I don’t want to see other people either. So, what are we? Are we dating?
The boy might respond with something like, No, I’m just going with the flow or We don’t need to put a label on what we have is special.
This pop out to the question 'What are we? because the relationship lacks definition. In a situationship, this question comes up because there's no clear direction. On the other hand, when you're dating, there’s usually some sense of direction ,commitment or a label attached
When it comes to situationship the example I gave doesn’t cover the whole concept. Situationship can be really complex. In many cases, one person wants more than just the sexual or emotional intimacy, while the other doesn’t. This can create a toxic cycle where both are stuck in the situation, unsure how to get out, and they only know how to continue as they are.
