How to Sharpen Scissors - 3 Ways, Plus Hacks!

  • Scissors can be sharpened and you probably have something in your home that you can use to make better cuts! Sharpen the beveled side of your scissors and hone by snipping the scissors together, they are self steeling! The best methods for sharpening scissors are on diamond or ceramic plates or rods, or fine belt sharpeners like the Work Sharp Original Knife and Tool Sharpener. If you don't have these tools you can use a honing rod or even a piece of hardened steel like a drill bit! #Howtosharpen #Worksharp

You probably have your answer already, but it's really not, a total beginner at sharpening can do it. The way I do it, which works very well, is to take apart the scissors, and to grind down on the FLAT side of the scissors, assuming the scissors are flat, and not curved at all.
I know the dudes in this video said not to do that, however that is with these cheap kitchen scissors. With already flat scissors it's fine to do JUST the flat side, but you have to make sure that you do the entire thing. From the tip of the scissor all the way down to where the nut and bolt go through the scissors. You need to do everywhere that the two halves of the scissors meet. So long as you get the entire flat of the scissors, you won't experience the separation the guy in the video describes at 1:05. My friend is a hairdresser, and I just did her scissors with this method, and her scissors went from relatively dull, to being able to cut tissue paper, which she tells me is what they use to judge the sharpness of scissors.
For curved scissors you do the same thing, but you just need a rounded stone, and not a flat one like in the video.

I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.

i bought the ken onion edition like 3 months ago to sharpen all my fabric scissors ...... i always do it as the instructions said and it cut well on a single layer but 2 or more it was near impossible.... today i was trying to sharpen them with a different angle from the one that is marked on the sharpener and that was the answer.... they need a lower angle than the one is marked on it.... im glad i discover this today because i know it does a beautiful job but you should mention that on the instructions... that fabric scissors need another angle to have the nicer results

Step One should always be to first clean the "gunk" off of all the metal faces on the shears, using a solvent(gasoline works great)...otherwise it will get into your stone/rod/wheel/whatever, and plug it up. scissors always seem to have gummy buildup on them, from cutting tape, houseplants, etcetera.
glad to see you mention the curved blades: other "youtube experts" totally ignore this very important consideration. i only buy scissors that can be taken apart...too hard to thoroughly clean and properly sharpen them as a pair.

Good video, and the only thing i'd change is that your statement at 1:05 is slightly wrong. That separation only happens when you only sharpen the blades of the scissors, and not the entire flat of the scissors. Assuming that the scissors aren't the ones displayed in the video that are self tensioning and are flat the whole way along, so long as you are grinding away everywhere the scissors meet, you won't get the separation

    Nice video.
Could you do a followup video and show how to sharpen dull (and badly worn) scissors on multitools, such as a Leatherman Surge and Swiss Champ (please show sharpening process on both knives)?
The scissors on these (popular) multitools have a small gap between the blades and don't allow the blades to be opened really far, which really henders the sharpening process. Even the push-through, scissor sharpeners only allow roughly 1/3 to 1/2, of the blade to be sharpened, which creates multiple cutting angles, on the small scissor beveled edge (also, show how to fix this).
I liked the drill bit sharpening tip for scissors. Thank you for sharing that.
Which grits would you recommend sharpening damaged scissor edges with (example answer: 320 to 800 to 1600 to 3000), where the beveled edge is beyond dull and needs to have a solid edge put back on?
Factory knife blade angles are usually 18 to 20 degrees per side, for EDC pocket knives.
What are the factory blade edges for different types of scissors (example: 8" fabric scissors, 6" kitchen shears for food prep, 1" scissors that are on multitools)? These angles would be good to know when repairing severely dull scissors.
On a side note, I used to swear by the Lansky Blademedic 4-in-1 Sharpener. I own several have recommended them to many people. Not only for how well they work, but also for how small of a footprint the sharpener takes in a pack or kit (and also because it's made of durable steel, unlike Smith's Pocket Pal PP1 Knife Sharpener, which is made mostly of plastic). Where am I going with this? Well, I used to use the Lansky Blade Medic on a regular basis, until I purchased and used a Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener and it has been a game changer for me. These days, I rarely use the Lansky Blade Medic when I have access to the Guided Field Sharpener.
My only complaint is how dirty the ceramic stone gets. Work Sharp needs to release an affordable ceramic cleanup tool like the Lansky Eraser Block (which cleans ceramic sharpeners without the need of any additional liquids or creams). I use the Eraser Block to keep the Course and Fine sides of the ceramic rod, in the Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener clean and looking like new, which, really allows me to sharpen my knifes easier, when the ceramic rod has all the excess metal shavings cleaned away.
Again, thank you for the helpful video.
    Sincerely,
    Jacob

      @amandaduckett3093 2 роки тому +1

I'm not sure what to do with the convex side, but if you want to do a micro bevel, you could try honing the blade like you would a chisel. It's the same sort of action as the initial sharpening, but to hone you then tilt the blade up approximately 5%, instead of flat, making a finer edge. Just make sure you hold the blade very steady when doing this so you don't accidentally round the edge. This is how honing is done on all sorts of woodworking blades, so I'm unsure if it's the correct procedure for scissors, but you could give it a shot!

One easy hack that works for me. Take a new or old soap steel wool pad. start about 1/4' inch in on the Pad start cutting with the tip of the scissors and keep
on going until you reach the base. You may have to do the whole pad to get the base sharpened, so if you get to the end of the pad and you have a cutting glove put it on. If not get another pad and cut down to where you feel safe. At max you may need to cut through two pads, but doing one usually does
the job. It may get real tough at the base, but keep on snipping, you may need the tip to finish off the strands. When finished, grab a piece of paper and
you will be amazed how the scissors glide through! Have done it and it works fine for me on good Kitchen Aid Scissors that have to be 15 years old.
Forget it if they are Dollar Store Scissors, not good steel and the edge is not renewable.

My wife bought a pair of scissors on eBay and there was a spot close but not at the top/tip of them that was digging in. They have a screw to adjust, and I tightened a bit but it didn’t take the catch away, so I took them apart and found that the nylon washer was not between the blades but to the screw side of the blade. When I put them together again - walah they work perfectly. So the blade has a chip on it, do I work the sharpener to remove that now? Thanks for sharing 🙏!

    • @WorkSharpOutdoor
      @WorkSharpOutdoor  3 роки тому

You can remove the chip with a sharpener. This may take a bit of time as there is a lot of material removal. Only sharpen the top of the edge, not the side that rubs together with the other arm, you need the arms to press together for good cutting action. Maintain the existing angle, and be patient!

You probably have your answer already, but the way I sharpen kitchen scissors, which works very well, is to take apart the scissors, and to grind down on the FLAT side of the scissors, assuming the scissors are flat, and not curved at all.
I know the dudes in this video said not to do that, however that is with these cheap self tensioning kitchen scissors. With already flat scissors it's fine to do JUST the flat side, but you have to make sure that you do the entire thing.

I was told that you can sharpen scissors by cutting a piece of sandpaper, is that true?

Hack: A sandpaper fingernail file will work in a pinch. Particularly the one with four grit levels.

I've know a few barbers who wince at the expense of the sharpener coming to town...

Why don't you stop the tip of the scissors in the middle of the blade?

Thanks for showing how I can sharpen my scissors with stuff I already use to sharpen knives. You've saved me at least £10 because I was going to buy something to do it. Also, are you prince Harry?
