At last, a scissor-sharpening tutorial that's straight to the point. I followed Wayne's technique and rescued 3 pairs of scissors. More helpful than any of the other dozen I watched. Thank you Wayne
Sorry, I missed your comment. Dry or wet works. If wet, the stone will cut a little better but most of the time I just use mine dry. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
I did. But when you try it, they would yell at you afterwards and make you feel stupid because you did it wrong. I guess the guy in this video forgot that step.
Great stuff Wayne. My husband of 35 years was a superb knife maker. I lost him a few years back. Now being a knife makers wife I do know than a few things about knives in general, kinds of steel, models, history and such. But after he was gone, and when my knives and scissors started getting dull…I uh, well I realized I didn’t know a dang thing about sharpening blades, I never had to! He always whipped out the stone and sharped them before he used them even, or at least was prepared to sharpen. Well, I knew that wouldn’t do. So I started watching videos and I’m become pretty savvy at straight blades, but scissors, well hit and miss. I have a ton of scissors because I wouldn’t throw them away. It’s the principle you know. It’s been awhile so I was looking for new videos. I want to use the stones, between my husband and my daddy (he was a woodworker) I have more stones than you can imagine (that sounds like I’m bragging😊). Besides, I like the feeling of the methodical motions of the stone, it’s like restoring old hand tools which I also do. Went thru several videos but when I came to yours, your style just clicked. Very common sense and familiar. Ok, I’m gonna start tackling this box of scissors. I’ll let you know how I do!
Hello Janis, So sorry to hear about your husband. I lost my wife just over 9 years ago (worst day of my life), so I understand the pain. It sounds like you know a lot more than most people and you will do great. Also, you may like this video about How to Sharpen, Pruning Shears, Garden Shears, Bypass Loppers or Limb Loppers. ua-cam.com/video/lGVMqGLKs-s/v-deo.html Good luck and I hope you have a GREAT DAY!
I have watched so many tutorials for sharpening scissors and was getting ready to spend a hundred dollars on an electric sharpener until I watched your video and gave it a try since I have a sandstone and OMG it worked!!!! You are the first ever to show something that actually worked to sharpen my scissors. I have to add that the package said titanium never dulls there is no need to sharpen. That was a joke they went dull quick. I wish I would have seen this video sooner I tossed so many pairs of scissors lol. Thank you Wayne for this tutorial and for saving me $100!!!!!
Omg! Apart from how simple and useful your instructions were, I have to say I really enjoyed listening to your voice and the twang in your accent. So lovely. Thank you
This video should have more views than every single goofy click bait “How to sharpen scissors” videos. UA-cam thinks it’s TiKTok now, smh. No algorithm, just knowledge. Thanks Wayne!
Happy wife, happy life! My wife has been asking me to sharpen all the scissors around the house from the kitchen to her craft sets. Heck, I even have a few dull pairs in my own workshop that I just never got around to. Well, today was the day. I did the usual UA-cam search and the first few were either too complicated or trying to sell me a fancy gadget. Thank you Wayne for this easy, straightforward video that got me the results my wife and I needed. I was able to rescue 10 pairs of scissors in less than 30 minutes! I'm impressed; I'm also subscribed. Great stuff!
I watched several videos on how to sharpen scissors, but this is the only one that actually helped! Everyone else rambled without demonstrating anything, or the creators were assuming that everyone who owns dull scissors also has a shop full of professional gadgets specifically made to sharpen scissors 😂 Thank you so much!!
Dear Wayne. My 2 pairs of kitchen scissors just about died until I came across your video. Thank you so much for such a straightforward presentation. My scissors are very much alive now. Love from 🇲🇾.
Thank you so much. Not only did you educate us on scissors you also educated us newbies on sharpening stones. One of friends has an expensive one and his didn't sharpen my scissors as good as the one I bought at Dollar Tree. I got all 6 pairs of my scissors sharpened faster and better than what he did. I'm now confident I'll be able to do my kitchen knives now. Thank you so much.
Hi Deborah, I enjoy knowing I've helped someone gain the knowledge or skill to do a job for themselves. I also have a video on knife sharpening-- ua-cam.com/video/bmIY_fQpRH4/v-deo.html. You might find it helpful as well. Thank you for the kind comment and for visiting, have a great day.
So nice! I’m a magician and I have a LOT of folding scissors ✂️ for String and Paper Magic. I’ve had a stone for a while but I never got around until now to learn how to sharpen them. Thank you Wayne!
Thank you Sir. I watched probably 4-5 videos before (thank goodness) I watched yours. Thank you for being straight to the point ,easy to understand and great demo. I have been trying to sharpen my dog grooming shears for years! Another attempt today and guess who solved my issue...yup, Wayne. Not only does he discuss how to sharpen but shows you everything, including those burrs. It seems like common sense before you actually see and hear in sensible words and voila...sharp scissors! For beginners (like me) it is useful to mark the blade area to be sharpened with an edding. Makes it easier to find the right angle, that is: you got the right angle when the edding colour disappears. Another thing: I just sharpened a pair of scissors and, at the end of the sharpening, used a leather strop for the flat side to remove any burr left. This stropping greatly enhanced the sharpness. All the best for 2024!
I'm glad to help. My only suggestion, be sure to get a good stone. I have seen a few cheep ones that do a very poor job. Good luck with your project and have a great day.
Thank you so much for this video. I have some fabric scissors that I use for hair cutting. They work well for both but lately 1 pr has put too much pressure on my injured thumb when I use them. Your tip on taking them apart to sharpen might be just what I what I need. Thank you
Thank you for this! I'm very glad I watched it first, this was very helpful. I just tried the method and it worked great, finally my shears and cutting properly again
Wayne, thank you for this great video! It was nicely done and you very thoroughly explained the technique and WHY you don’t do certain things. I always find that sooo helpful when you tell someone why they shouldn’t do something (like the backside). You sound like you’re from the south, maybe North Carolina, because that’s where I lived for 25 years and my hubby is a southern boy from NC.
Hello Elisabeth, Thank you for the very nice comment. And yes, I am a southern boy. North Carolina all my life. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
Thank you for this video. Exactly what I needed to see! Perhaps you could do a video on basics of soldering. I have some craft projects in mind but I need to be schooled on soldering first. Cheers!
Thank you for the kind comment. I have a long list of subjects to do videos on but I will add soldering to the list. What types of materials will you need to solder? Thank you for subscribing and have a great day.
I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.
Say, that was an exceptionally fine video. By the way, most of the scissors that I have ever come across were riveted in place. What I had to do then was to drill the original rivet out, and replace it with a new rivet. At times when a metric rivet was used, I simply had to enlarge the hole slightly so as to accommodate a standard rivet.
Great video. Thanks! Not only was I doing it wrong but I forgot I had a stone. It was given to me by my father. I shall now pass the stone on to my children. And they to theirs. It will be their inheritance. Saving them money on buying new scissors and knives! They will thank me.
Sandpaper will work but be sure to keep it very flat. If the edge is up a little, it will be more difficult to get a good edge. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
@@DIYwithWayne Thank you . Sure a sandpaper is not as flat and stable as a sharpening stone , that's why I am not satisfied with the result . Happy new year.
Wow, there is a lot of misinformation out there. I've saw a video where this one guy was actually telling you to sharpen the back side and saying how it's actually a slight hollow grind on the back and saying how you only want to lightly do it to touch up the edges. So glad i came across this, this morning, as i was about to do a customer's scissors that way. Thank you for showing the old fashioned way. That's how i normally do things and it's never failed me yet.
Some people suggest water but I use a light oil or just dry. It's best to use water or oil on it because that helps to clean the stone but sometimes I use it dry. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
@@DIYwithWayne Thank you! I sharpened 6 pairs of scissors after listening yesterday, and even the cheap ones can cut fabric now. I just put a little oil on the scissors to clean them.
There are several ways they may come apart. However some won't come apart and yours may be like this. You can still sharpen them using what I showed in the video. It's just a little easier if they come apart. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
Can you please post a tutorial on how to sharpen a pair of curved pruning snips? I have several pairs of Chikamasa B-500 SRF Japanese steel curved blade with fluorine coated shears that are kind of pricey and I use them Daily for work. It's very hard to find a tutorial on how to sharpen these type of shears.
I have one " How to Sharpen, Pruning Shears, Garden Shears, Bypass Loppers or Limb Loppers. " You can find it here: ua-cam.com/video/lGVMqGLKs-s/v-deo.html Good luck with your project and have a great day.
I have never seen a scissors that comes apart like yours did. I have a couple that have what looks like a screw that could be loosened, but my Farberware one that came with my Knife set doesn't have a way to take it apart. It's weird too because you would expect a quality set like that they would have made it so you could take it apart to sharpen it. Thank you very much for showing us this.
Thanks for the tips. A bit hard to get a feel for the spot since my available scissors are more on the thin side but well, i've got 3 pairs so i'll try and see. Gotta trim my dog's furr as it's a mess.
Hi! Thanks for this video. Please, tell us how to sharpen a pair of scissors whose parts cannot be separated. The usual tipe for sawing. Thanks. Sandra from Mexico., 🇲🇽
Hello I currently own a honing stick. Would that be useful for this technique or do I need to look for a wet stone? Looking to sharpen dog grooming shears.
Hi Wayne. Thank you so much for this video! I bought the sharpest victorinox kitchen scissor and unfortunately it went blunt so fast thanks to it being used as the everything scissors. Haha. I only have one question about your stone, what exactly is it made of and is it course or fine? I have been looking at stones and they are so confusing and expensive, so if I can just get one for everything it will be awesome! Thanks again for your wisdom
I would suggest you look for one that has a medium side and a fine side. Just stay away from the cheap stones. My Mom has one that is VERY poor, so I told here not to use it and I will sharpen her knives. If you get a fine stone by itself, you will spend a lot of time on a dull edge. Good luck with finding the stone you need. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
It is not necessary but you can if it helps you. Sometimes I use a light oil. There are a lot of different stones out there and some need water or oil and others don't.
Your video was very helpful unfortunately I didn't start watching it until after I worked on my scissors and made them completely dull so if you mess up the edge how can you fix it?
Some people suggest water but I use a light oil or just dry. It's best to use water or oil on it because that helps to clean the stone but sometimes I use it dry. The rust would be old metal filed away. Use a light oil when sharpening and that will help to clean the rust off your stone. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
Those can be difficult and there are different types of serrating. If you want those sharpened, you may want to find a professional sharpening service that would have the proper tools. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
You’re welcome 😊. Glad it helped. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. It means a lot to know you found our video helpful. Hope you have a great day.
2 questions.. My stone has 2 sides. A dk gray & lt gray. I'm assuming lt gray is finishing edge. Am I right? The stone came with no instructions. Should I soak it b4 using?
I can't tell you which side is the finish side, but when you pull your knife blade across it, the finish side will feel smoother. As for soaking it, I add oil when using the stone. Some people will soak in water. I think both ways work well. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

Thank you Wayne everypair of scissors in my house can be sharpened now I watch my dad all those years. Thank you for review.
Hi Wayne, does the stone need to be wet before starting or is this done on a dry stone with dry scissors? TIA
Sorry, I missed your comment. Dry or wet works. If wet, the stone will cut a little better but most of the time I just use mine dry. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

Great tips! Questions: Do you soak the stone in water first? Do you use oil on the stone?
Some people suggest water but I use a light oil or just dry. It's best to use water or oil on it because that helps to clean the stone but sometimes I use it dry. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
@@DIYwithWayne Thank you! I sharpened 6 pairs of scissors after listening yesterday, and even the cheap ones can cut fabric now. I just put a little oil on the scissors to clean them.
Thank you! Now I can sharpen my dull scissors 😀
Glad I could help! Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

Nicely done, thanks a bunch Wayne.
Great to-the-point video, just wish it was shown with scissors together cuz mine aren’t coming apart, don’t wanna separate them
There are several ways they may come apart. However some won't come apart and yours may be like this. You can still sharpen them using what I showed in the video. It's just a little easier if they come apart. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
thank you. This helps a lot

Thanks Wayne

this is great! thank you
Glad you like it! Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
There a lot of different styles. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
You kick ass Wayne!

Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the tips. A bit hard to get a feel for the spot since my available scissors are more on the thin side but well, i've got 3 pairs so i'll try and see. Gotta trim my dog's furr as it's a mess.
You are very welcome and good luck trimming your dog's hair. Thank you for visiting, have a great day.

Hi! Thanks for this video. Please, tell us how to sharpen a pair of scissors whose parts cannot be separated. The usual tipe for sawing. Thanks. Sandra from Mexico., 🇲🇽
Do the same thing just being careful not to dull the side not being sharpened. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

Hello I currently own a honing stick. Would that be useful for this technique or do I need to look for a wet stone? Looking to sharpen dog grooming shears.
A flat stone would be better but what you have should work. Good luck with your project and have a great day.
Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
does the stone need to be wet? thx for sharing. great info.
It is not necessary but you can if it helps you. Sometimes I use a light oil. There are a lot of different stones out there and some need water or oil and others don't.
@@DIYwithWayne water and oil can be used interchangeably regardless of what type of stone you’re using unless you’ve already used oil on the stone
"you can buy all kinds of wizbang things"
video deserved a like for that alone
Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
Your video was very helpful unfortunately I didn't start watching it until after I worked on my scissors and made them completely dull so if you mess up the edge how can you fix it?
Well your video was certainly the most helpful and my sisters are actually getting sharp as a razor yay thank you
You are very welcome and thank you for visiting, have a great day.
Hi do u wet the stone? If so How? What if your stone is old and rust? 6:45
Question. What about the scissors that have a very slight serrated edge? How to sharpen those ones
Those can be difficult and there are different types of serrating. If you want those sharpened, you may want to find a professional sharpening service that would have the proper tools. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
Thank you... this helped me alot... 🙂✂️

great video, very helpful
2 questions..
My stone has 2 sides. A dk gray & lt gray. I'm assuming lt gray is finishing edge. Am I right?
The stone came with no instructions. Should I soak it b4 using?
I can't tell you which side is the finish side, but when you pull your knife blade across it, the finish side will feel smoother. As for soaking it, I add oil when using the stone. Some people will soak in water. I think both ways work well. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.
