  • The newly released Alijos lever drag reels by Okuma have been coined the "mini Makaira." These reels are well built and have just about the same components internally as the popular Makaira lever drag reels.

Hmm I bought a second hand AJ-16S SE with 500 m 0.35 quality braid for only $145. I thought it was just a "normal" conventional reel and at that price I didn't think twice. Problem is we don't really have many (any) sailfish here in northern Europe :D

This is such a good casting reel!

Would it work for surf casting?

I spent over a week casting the 12 off a pier everyday and night field testing it. This reel can cast far! Easy to cast too. I was reporting back to the designer my observations. I was able to overpower a large stingray and a small shark using it. So yes, because I surf cast till this day with the 12 unit myself.

The 12 size Alijos makes no sense to me. It’s .4 oz lighter than the Mak 15t and $100 cheaper. At least the Alijos 16 is 4 oz lighter than the mak 16!

Dave, any chance that Okuma might make a west coast deep spool for the mk 15t ? that would be a killer Idea

Hadn’t heard that suggestion yet. Pretty interesting for sure.

@@DaveysWorldFishing maybe you can bring it the their attention, as that little tank is very popular, and it can bring more sales to Okuma over the rest with the 1 year warranty

is the 16 size suitable for the night knife jigging application?

It’ll work perfectly for both of those. If you are looking for a higher speed version, I’d go with the AJ-12SII. That is the 12 2-speed high speed reels. 6.4:1.

@@DaveysWorldFishing was considering the 12 2-speed. Is there enough line capacity on the 12? Was considering spooling with 80 or 100 lb

On the 12 you will get about 400yds/80, so I'm guessing 350ish of 100? Might be a bit small for the 100 yard set up. If that was the case, I'd go 16 size.

@@DaveysWorldFishing thanks for the info Dave! I ended up getting a Makaira 16ii SEA instead. will likely look into the 12 as a sinker rig/heavy fly line setup

Is this video really only 2 weeks old, and am I really the first comment? Crazy. My reason for watching and commenting is that I want one but am having a difficult time finding one for sale. Any ideas why? Any help appreciated.

Yeah, pretty new video. These reels were very popular at the SoCal shows this year and I know most retailers sold out. Stores like Charkbait in Huntington Beach have them in stock or can order them for you.
