I think your bottom bed should be herbs and easy to grow vegies. My thoughts would be lavender, basil and rosemary for the scent, lettuce, carrots, and tomatoes for the food, nasturtiums and other edible flowers for the colour.
I do not understand how every one of your videos creates an emotional experience for me. I am so happy for you to have such a beautiful space to entertain. Even though the brick area may not be as clean as you’d like, when you combine everything together, it looks so gorgeous…like an old world terrace! Bravo MaCenna!
MaCenna, to avoid disappointment with gardening, make sure your plants are appropriate for the space you are planting them in. Roses like a lot of sun, gardenia and camellias do better in the shade. The corner that you have your seating looks pretty shaded. Also, be sure to amend your soil before planting new things. Good luck. Looks beautiful, always feel inspired after watching your videos
Yup amend the soil. I’ve learned that the hard way where I live. I wondered why plants weren’t thriving or dying. It was the clay soil that some plants don’t like. At the places where I had raised beds with beautiful soil the plants always did better.
Impatients LOVE shade, but add so much color. I think they would be an added focal point in your seating corner. Good luck, Macenna. Thank you for always inspiring me! ❤️❤️❤️
Looked for this comment. Yes. I’m not sure what time of the day this was filmed, but it looked pretty shady near the two lounge chairs. Shade loving plants might be happy there.
As a self taught gardener and someone who loves an eclectic mix of plants I would give the advice to not focus on the flowers but on the leaf variations of your plants. Typically then your garden will always look beautiful and if anything flowers that's a bonus. If you study garden magazines you'll see gardens with an array of plants with different leaf colours, not just flower colours. Take a look at coral bells. They're easy to grow and keep to there own little "mound". They have incredible variations of leaf colours from bright red, to pinkish, to bright and dark greens, browns and purples to al out black. Sometimes people do just gardens of different coral bells. Plus they get the most whimsical flowers. They would do so well along the bottoms of your gardens with the ivy - depending of course on that slope. Good luck! ❤ P.S. I've recently fallen in love with "Black Pearl" coral bells and they might add some variation without taking away from your other plants and colours.
A tip for your lights- it helps to run a thick wire across the strand and attach the strand of lights to it. This prevents the cord from sagging over time!
Hi! I am an avid gardener, but south east. I highly recommend looking up plants native to your area. That will increase the native pollinators and help the ecosystem. They’ll also be more low maintenance than a plant that isn’t native to your soil/climate. Look for native pollinator plants that are companion plants to one another (I usually pick three per area, and two of each of those species). Then in another area, plant another companion collection to build a diverse garden. 🐝
pay attention to how the sun moves through your backyard and get plants that love shade for under your trees and sun loving for closer to the house, I don’t think a rose will thrive in that corner because most need full sun, 6-8 hours at least. But know that you can change and move plants whenever you want, nothing is permanent and don’t feel bad! Looking so cozy!!
That's true about planting roses in that corner. They trive in the sun, you need plants that love the shade. Good luck with your new plants. It's looking beautiful.
You can dry the lavender by hanging it upside down with twine! It looks so cute! And then - crush up the dry lavender, add it to a mason jar with white vinegar, cover and let it infuse for 2 weeks. Then strain the lavender-infused vinegar (to get rid of the dry lavender bits) into a glass spray bottle of half lavender-infused vinegar and half filtered water. And now you have an all-purpose cleaning spray! Lavender is awesome for cleaning! I grow lavender and have been doing this for the past two years ✨❤
Beautiful space!! I do think that a wood-toned dining table would make this space look 10x better. That grey faux wood is really making it difficult for the spaces to look cohesive. But it's still a stunning space with so much more potential left to be unlocked!
Your agapanthus look healthy enough. They come from South Africa (where I live) and they are extremely hardy. They should bloom around mid-summer. Something to consider with the colour of the flowers is that they don't all bloom at the same time. This means that you can have one colour scheme for summer and a different one for winter. You are clearly going to be an excellent gardener and I so agree with you, gardening makes you feel alive. It is very creative, but the difference is that plants never quite grow the way you think they will and the garden looks different month to month. I don't think anyone can ever be depressed if they have a garden they look after. I love the way your backyard now looks. Those lights look magical! You are just so talented.
It could be really nice to add a bunch of beautiful plant pots with herbs or CA native perennial wildflowers to the corners of this space. Would be a great way to add more green to the space and try out some new plants without being restricted by the existing beds. Looks fantastic so far!
You have the perfect slope in your backyard patio for a pondless waterfall. I love the look and your hidden garden is just perfect for it, you should really consider it when you're all settled in and everything is already done
Omg the bottom garden bed would be perfect for an herb garden for Romeo’s yummy cooking! ALSO! What about having him do a mini segment of his cooking in one of your videos?! Omg that would be such a fun way to incorporate his cooking! 😍
I love how you keep it natural and blended into the space. The outdoor decor isn't "screaming" in your face. It looks like it would feel as if you're nestled into a cozy garden. LOVE!!!! 🥰
I loved hearing the owl while you were doing your outdoor dining area “after” shots. It was such a natural element at the perfect time! I absolutely loved how you redid your outdoor space. You are so talented & gifted. Thank you!
For the garden. Make a sketch of the house and garden and put in north and south East and west. Then Take photos of everything and go to a plant market and ask someone to help, you. They usually do this for free and hope you will buy the plants they suggest from their place.
I got proper secret garden vibes with Kinsley coming down the steps at the end! You have created such a magical space, I swear you could take a back alley in a city and make it look beautiful! Also so sweet to see Romeo loving on Kinsley! I’m so used to seeing Kinsley as a little Mamas girl, but she clearly loves her Daddy too!
A stunning romantic space for you and Romeo to have dinner. The night view is absolutely gorgeous. Kinsley is an adorable helper. Her hopping down the garden stairs, precious. 😍
I think going to a local garden center with a picture of your space would be super helpful. The people there will have experience gardening in your area and can help point you in the right direction. Be sure to also check the tag on the plants your purchasing to ensure they will thrive in the conditions your putting them in.
Ooooo...it looks so inviting! Can't wait to see what's up the little brick path!!! I would be staggering some lanterns up those steps. Great job MaCenna. 🤗
Kinsley seems to love exploring in her new yard. Up and down the hill, up and down the steps, she is just adorable. the outside dining looks amazing, just love the overhead lights. That peak and your trees made for a perfect setting for them.
I love that Kinsley always has to be like right up in the action of whatever is happening. Like standing right next to leaves being raked or standing on a rug currently being rolled...she is hilarious.
It's going to look beautiful!! Don't worry about the agapanthus! They flower later in the summer. You could take them out and put them in pots as they actually really like having their roots restricted in pots. They flower well that way. A gardener told me once the only time to repot an agapanthus is when it breaks the old one (!!!) ❤❤
Maybe a fountain of sorts in that corner .. and let's not forget the pool lights. Opening that gate and putting seating around the pool with lights and candles even on the water would be so romantic and gorgeous with plants and flowers also. Hope we get to see Romeo more. Love the both of you.
Totally worth the wait, I’m on my porch now after mulching and planting and decorating. It’s so nice to be done for now and enjoying nature. Enjoy the day
Don’t forget to seal up the holes from the dish! Your flower beds probably need something like mushroom dirt to add nutrients to the soil. When you choose plants consider how much room the roots need to flourish. It doesn’t look like there is much room for larger plants on the bottom bed. Your patio looks so much better! I really love the lights.
I like what you’ve done with the exception of the red geraniums. There are so many beautiful and dainty flowers in light pastels that would look better.
Bougainvillea's grow terrifically in California, at least on my front porch in San jose I had a massive one that grew all they way up the porch onto the roof. It was stunning!
This turned out great! As someone else mentioned Garden Answer is great inspiration. Laura's aesthetic is similar to yours. She loves textures and year-round interest. Maybe check out a local landscape nursery in your area. I find the employees are usually more than happy to help find the right plants and provide great suggestions. And please be mindful of that hillside. I'd plant for erosion control too.
It's a gorgeous makeover! If you want something big and blooming in the corner under that tree, maybe take a look at hydrangeas? There are tons of varieties and they are more shadow tolerant than roses. I would also advise not to plant flowers one by one, but make groups of them with shorter plants closer to the patio and higher on the back. So you'll have a more interesting look
Wonderful suggestions, Lena. Was about to make a similar remark. You are my kind of gardener. I live in the Austrian alps in Tirol. Very envious of the plants and seasons of California. We are having a very cold and brezzy spring. The mountain tops are full of snow and skiers still abound!
Oh ABSOLUTELY hydrangeas!! That would be such a showstopper in that seating corner, and they LOVE shade and containers. I also think anemones would add some fun mid height with the geranium and they make for nice cut flowers.
MaCenna, do not be afraid to cut all the Ivy way back. When you cut it back, then clean underneath. Your other plants need to be taken out, and the soil needs to be refreshed. Fertilize your flowering plant in early spring and again around September. I use Bio-tone. It is hard to over fertilize your plants with Bio-tone. You don't want to kill your plants with too much fertilizer. If you want to wait until next year, just make sure you fertilize your plants as soon as possible.
I love seeing how much Kinsley enjoys her yard…and you, too!! The joy of owning your own home just shines through everything you do. Maybe some of the plants that aren’t healthy aren’t getting enough sun. Some plants really take a lot of sun.
With mature trees like yours, u could consider thinning branches and cutting the height a little. It doesn't have to be dramatic but can bring a lot more light in.
It's about 330 pm in Florida. I have been working in my front gardens since about 730 am. I love my grand oaks, but I despise leaves. And I'm not finished. And I have been putting down gravel rather than mulch for a couple years. It's great doesnt wash away, and really helps with the weeds. My helper and I finished refreshing all the paths last week. All this tiring work is worth it in the end. Hang in there. Your garden and patio is looking lovely. The furniture is really nice. Both of your properties are so pretty Now watching you set the table I suddenly have a boost of energy to keep at it today. BTW I'm 73.😊
MaCenna! It’s so true, gardening brings life! Your backyard haven is even more stunning now! All you need is a Serena and Lily double hanging swing now and it’s perfection!!! As always, love the presentation of your video!! You are incredible! Thanks for all you do for this job of yours! XOXO
Hostas are beautiful but don't thrive in Southern California unfortunately. It doesn't get cold enough for them to go dormant in the winter. A better option would be heucheras.
Hosta is an amazing plant, so many leaf colours to choose from. Brighter green for shade areas, darker for sun areas, endless varieties, easy to divide for more free plants, easy care, indestructible! Some have beautiful stalks with flowers too. They will keep weeds down as well. That slope would be PERFECT for hostas!
@@emmaderuiter5192 This was my thought....so many varieties (100s of them) and some have a tall flowering stalk. Plus they are perennial...hard to kill them. Wasn't aware that they don't go dormant in Cali. MaCenna will do her research though and see what she can come up with!!!
Growing up in Minnesota, the first outdoor spring clean is the best 😍 landscape maintenance takes soooo long and is such hard work but it’s so rewarding to see how beautifully the gardens develop all summer long
Always choose plants that are good in shade or sun. They will grow better. Scraps (not meat) buried around plants will help feed them. Coffee grounds around camellias and azaleas because they need acid soil. Good luck!!
Apple cider vinegar mixed with 3/4 Water works best scapes>>> Bring Bugs 🐛, slugs, pests like Rats & mice etc😮 Not Great😢 specially near picnic 😮 Tables with Food😵💫An outdoor water 💦 feature sounds Great 👍 by Those Beautiful papasan Looking Chairs 💺 ❤❤❤ I Love potted planters even near that Pool for ambiance ❤ or indoor by those bay windows or spread around in odd spots plants inside or outside are wonderful on that We All Agree❤
Absolutely love how it turned out with the colors, lights and candles! 😃 another thought for the candles though, if you were to spread them out, you could use citronella candles to give off a nice smell and keep bugs/ mosquitos away 😊
I would definitely recommend applying polymeric sand for the brick patio, that would close up any cracks and look really clean I love how this garden area is already turning out 😊
I love that you’re introducing some colors to the palette of beiges and browns. The intro of the navy dishware and slate gray/blue chair cushions really compliment the orange-brown and brick colors. Nicely done!
Yup, this is my experience with ivy as well. I’d get rid of some of those plants back there and out in natives. You could terrace that area so it’s easier to manage.
Your joy is so infectious, when I work from home I often watch your videos and it just makes me look over at my ipad playing in the background and smile. Thanks for putting such positivity and beauty out into the world, and for being apart of the goodness in my day.
As a horticulturist and a designer I would put a round earn in that corner by the 2 chairs to break all that square going around. And for interest. Anyways fabulous.
Roses would be a disaster behind that seating area. I would suggest oak leaf hydrangeas instead. Roses need sun. Hydrangeas would be better. I also agree with the other posters. You need to add compost to your beds to feed your plants.
It all looks great MaCenna. All of the work you’ve done on the flower beds is really paying off. Thank you for showing us the night time views with all of the candles and lights! It looks so inviting.
I love every bit of this makeover. I would be concerned about ants and spiders crawling up your table cloth. If it were mine( I wish it was mine), I would not have it reaching the ground. Love 🤗
I was thinking she could tie halfway down to the ends of the fabric with some sort of Jute twine or frayed velvet ribbon, so that it keeps the natural rustic look, but doesn't touch the ground.
Love love love the garden transformation. Could always add a hydrangea in the seating area along with lavender and the roses. Definitely agree with waiting till the garden develops. Our previous owners were keen gardens so when they knew they were going to sell she took a photo each month of the gardens to send to us so we knew what came up. Was so thoughtfull. X
Camellias are shade loving plants that can go to part shade when older. They are beautiful, but those geraniums are goners. They need more sun. Move them before they die. Poor things. I think instead, you can get beautiful color from Begonias in that space. The lights are gorgeous, and you are so talented at decorations. I could not do any of that, but I understand plants.
What a beautiful outdoor area. Your new home already has a nice variety of plants but it is always fun to add more that you pick out yourself. The table, candles, string lights and pretty blue plates look great….an overall cozy and very inviting space. Thanks again for sharing with us. 🥰
Shade. Shade is why most of your plants are not thriving, All the plants you have there, geranium, agapanthus etc require full sun to perform best. A rose will also suffer because it needs full sun. Research shade plants for your area and plant those instead.
Love the outdoor dining area and the great furniture. Maybe you could find a rustic stone water feature to put in the corner where you were going to plant the white Camellia. Maybe a more narrow but taller feature would be a beautiful addition to the ambiance of your corner seating area! This is so fun! And... so is watching Kinsley exploring in the background. I'm so excited for you and Romeo!🎉😀😎🐶🎉
ATTENTION, plants that say they are poisonous need to be removed with animals. Kinsley may not eat them but with some plants even rubbing up against them can be harmful, dogs do lick themselves, they sniff plants roll in them, I couldn't bear watching your show and you having to tell us Kinsley is not well. Take note of those plants and talk to your vet and see what their recommendations are, I know how much Kinsley means to you. I do work at a greenhouse and we always ask our costumers if they have children or pets when recommended what they should plant. Don't take it that it won't happen to Kinsley look at it that I can just not have to worry if I make my environment save in the first place KINSLEY comes first. When watching your videos watch how Kinsley likes to wander through the garden, she doesn't know one plant from another!!!!! Also if your going to plant edibles in your garden make sure they are not planted near any of these poisonous plants either!!!!! Love you all, keep safe❤👵🇨🇦
Lovely space MaCenna, one thing I miss the most are all living in SoCal is the fruit trees in my parents yard, we were very spoiled going out and picking over 10 types of fruit, you are very blessed 💖🙏
I think your bottom bed should be herbs and easy to grow vegies. My thoughts would be lavender, basil and rosemary for the scent, lettuce, carrots, and tomatoes for the food, nasturtiums and other edible flowers for the colour.
I think that's a great idea
Omg I totally could do that!!!
Excellent idea
I came here to say the same thing. Rosemary and lavendar for sure!
Is there enough direct sun? Most herbs and veggies want 6-8 hours of exposure 😊
I do not understand how every one of your videos creates an emotional experience for me. I am so happy for you to have such a beautiful space to entertain. Even though the brick area may not be as clean as you’d like, when you combine everything together, it looks so gorgeous…like an old world terrace! Bravo MaCenna!
Awww hahaha thank you so much!!!!
I agree. How much more if there are bougainvillea flowers?
Soooo cute seeing Kinsley hopping up and down and enjoying the outdoor space!! ❤
She LOVES going outside!!
@@XOMaCenna You have to get a Bougainvillea in that garden!! imagine how beautiful and colorful it would be- Sooo European!
She is the star of the show!!!!!
Mm::m

Looked for this comment. Yes. I’m not sure what time of the day this was filmed, but it looked pretty shady near the two lounge chairs. Shade loving plants might be happy there.
ROSES ALSO NEED A LOT OF WATER
I’ll be surprised if the agapanthus in corner ever bloom. They need more light to thrive.
Kinsley is living her best life out there ❤

This is true
The magical moment when you sit down to admire your well-thought creations--that's home, that's life. Much joy to you!
Lavender would be so lovely in your garden, bees love it and it smells amazing in the summer!
We have some lavender around the pool and I love it! That’s definitely a good idea
Agree! And Russian sage.
Macenna, that is lovely! You all are going to enjoy that outdoor space!

Unfortunately lavender needs full sun (6+ hours of unfiltered sunlight), so I don't think it would be a good fit for this area.
It turned out beautifully Macenna, very bohemian, I bet Romeo loved it too. Kinsley is living her best life in that garden, she is so precious.
Beautiful space!! I do think that a wood-toned dining table would make this space look 10x better. That grey faux wood is really making it difficult for the spaces to look cohesive. But it's still a stunning space with so much more potential left to be unlocked!
I came to say the same thing! I’m not sold on that table at all! I think it looks out of place with everything else
I love seeing Kinsley enjoying herself outside.
Please remember to buy some roof patch for the holes left by the bolts holding the satellite dish, preferably before it rains.
Commenting so she sees this!!
I was thinking the same thing
of course! those screws were massive!

Bougainvillea is gorgeous but it often has huge thorns!. A beautiful plant but not a friendly one.

I love everything you did. Candle sticks perfect for the table. Cozy
Macenna has all the ivy she’ll ever need for winding along and between the table centre and candle holders.
Hi Xo Macenna, Woww! 🙈Everything together it Looks Stunning, give me a vibes of Peace and Calm, Enjoy your beautiful outdoor patio.☕️🍰🌷🌷😊

Both of your properties are so pretty
Now watching you set the table I suddenly have a boost of energy to keep at it today. BTW I'm 73.😊
So beautiful. I want to see pillar candles going up the stairs. Or you could move the candles to the stairs when you have dinner.
I am so happy you showed us the garden at night 🌙 It looks beautiful
You made your outdoor space so inviting and comfortable. Love it!
MaCenna! It’s so true, gardening brings life! Your backyard haven is even more stunning now! All you need is a Serena and Lily double hanging swing now and it’s perfection!!! As always, love the presentation of your video!! You are incredible! Thanks for all you do for this job of yours! XOXO
So happy for this to come on right now ❤🎉
Me too
This just makes me smile!! Talk about an upgrade to your quality of life!!! You have totally stepped it up!!!
Lovely! As shady as your backyard is, you should try Hosta plants....so many different varieties and they flower on a taller stalk.
Oooo I have to look at those!!! Thank you
Hostas are beautiful but don't thrive in Southern California unfortunately.
GOOD SUGGESTION
Loved the outdoor area transformation! ❤ And love Kinsley even more 😍 she makes everything extra cute! ❤
You did a wonderful job on this outside transformation. It looks great in the day and magical at night!
Good luck!!
Apple cider vinegar mixed with 3/4 Water works best scapes>>> Bring Bugs 🐛, slugs, pests like Rats & mice etc😮 Not Great😢 specially near picnic 😮
Tables with Food😵💫An outdoor water 💦 feature sounds Great 👍 by Those Beautiful papasan Looking Chairs 💺 ❤❤❤ I Love potted planters even near that Pool for ambiance ❤ or indoor by those bay windows or spread around in odd spots plants inside or outside are wonderful on that We All Agree❤
Regarding Camillas - my aunt would throw rotten tomatoes, because 😊they love the acid. Her camillas were amazing & huge!
Avocado and lemon tree?!!!!!! My dream!! You surely scored girl!!!
Absolutely love how it turned out with the colors, lights and candles! 😃 another thought for the candles though, if you were to spread them out, you could use citronella candles to give off a nice smell and keep bugs/ mosquitos away 😊
that’s a great idea!
Romeo smooching on Kinsley is so heart warming ❤
I would definitely recommend applying polymeric sand for the brick patio, that would close up any cracks and look really clean
I love how this garden area is already turning out 😊
I just love your energy, you're so happy and lovely and chatty ☺
Can I suggest an azalea for the corner. They come in a variety of colors and do great in shade.
I love that you’re introducing some colors to the palette of beiges and browns. The intro of the navy dishware and slate gray/blue chair cushions really compliment the orange-brown and brick colors. Nicely done!
Ivy, it left a long will take over everything. Also, be careful, rats and mice love to live in ivy.
Totally agree and if it gets into the brick in the property it will damage so much of your house. It’s my nemesis in my garden!
We found some HUGE rats in our Ivy 😢
Yep, rip the Ivy up. It will be back next year!
Yup, this is my experience with ivy as well. I’d get rid of some of those plants back there and out in natives. You could terrace that area so it’s easier to manage.
@@lilgardner91 Yrs ago I had a cat that loved the ivy around our apt. She was always hunting.
Ah so beautiful. Such a peaceful setting. A great place for your small intimate wedding.
I think you need a more powerful pressure washer (you can rent one ) and something to kill the mildew (black gunk) . :)
Your outside dining area is beautiful-calm and relaxing. Will be so nice to have family and friends join you out there.
Kinsley living her best life…like a small child, always exploring and underfoot, lol! Delightful!❤
Roses do need a lot of sunlight
What a beautiful outdoor area. Your new home already has a nice variety of plants but it is always fun to add more that you pick out yourself. The table, candles, string lights and pretty blue plates look great….an overall cozy and very inviting space. Thanks again for sharing with us. 🥰
Shade. Shade is why most of your plants are not thriving, All the plants you have there, geranium, agapanthus etc require full sun to perform best. A rose will also suffer because it needs full sun. Research shade plants for your area and plant those instead.
Beautiful♥️♥️♥️Love the table and all the chairs ..Such a lovely garden.♥️♥️♥️♥️
You found “Wilson” 😂
I love watching you become a gardener 👩🌾
Those chairs are butt pinchers 😂
Excellent advice!
Lovely space MaCenna, one thing I miss the most are all living in SoCal is the fruit trees in my parents yard, we were very spoiled going out and picking over 10 types of fruit, you are very blessed 💖🙏
Roses need SUN, Plant Hostas instead, in that shady corner ..
