I love this song...Tarja's was just as amazing as Floor's...and yes it's about Jesus praying in the garden and the torment he went through,.knowing what was going to happen to him! And yes...I am a devout Christian who loves Nightwish.. Toumas has never really said anything about his religious beliefs... but his music is amazing. These last two years have been like living in an actual nightmare, because of my lower back injury which left me paralyzed from the waist down! I could not have surgery because of a rare genetic blood disorder that causing me to be predisposed to having DVT's. I am happy to say that prayer and physical therapy I am walking on my own!
@@larryd4352 Tuomas is atheist, very into science, not religious beliefs, yet respectful of other people's beliefs, and I'm pretty much the rest of the band members, current and former are not into religious stuff
If I had to pick 1 song as my favourite (I have many of those) it would be this one, both in Tarja's and Floor's performance. It's just an amazing song
It's from their second album Oceanborn (1998 with Tarja). With this album they started their international career, having a double release with their first album (Angels Fall First) in Germany. And the germans loved it. I remember it very well, cause a week before the release here, i was skipping school as an 11-year old and hanging out in the local 'Müller' (a discounter store with a seperate music floor, where the employees would play music from Albums they liked). I went there to browse some CDs or games, and suddenly i heard from the speakers a song that immediately mezmerized me. When i went to the music station (where the employees choose the music for the floor and where customers could listen to CDs before purchasing) to ask what in the world was playing right now and that i want to buy it, i was told that i couldn't: It was a finnish album from a new band and a finnish exchange student, working in the store part time, brought it with him and played it. Lucky for me though, i learned the name of the band, Nightwish, and went to the magazine section to browse for that name. And surprise, there was an article about them in the 'Metalhammer' about their new album, that they are already starting to revolutionize the symphonic metal scene and with the release date. You can bet your ass, i was waiting at the store for it to open at release date and was literally the first customer there.
Gethsemane (pronounced Geth-sem-anee) is the garden where Jesus Christ was arrested prior to his crucifixion. This is a Tarja-era track performed here on the band's Decades tour. This is a Tuomas Holopainen song and has nothing to do with the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Unrequited (un-ree-quite-ed) love means love that is not returned or reciprocated.
Gethsemane is the Garden of Olives, where Jesus spend his last evening. Tuomas places himself in that role, but contemplating about a lost or unreachable loved one (Tarja?😈). So it has nothing to do with Lloyd Webber. Another reactor, JW Soundworks, did a very profound analysis on the instrumental part, showing Tuomas using even a little piece of a Bach toccata. My next favorite version of this song is by Marcela Bovio who did a very nice cover in her home studio. The song is from the 1998 album "Oceanborn", here refurbished by Tuomas as part of the Decades Tour, celebrating two decades of Nightwish.

Glad you decided to revisit Nightwish with Floor even if by accident. Certainly better than a lot of your current reactions to pop singers. And I guess Dan Vasc has become more popular since covering Nightwish songs although personally not keen.

Irene, this was during a livestream and this was right after I reacted to Dan Vasc doing Gethsemane. They told me where that song was from and so when this one got suggested, my first thought was that it was the same song but a different version. Turned it it a completely different song. Also, it's possible to cover a song but making it your own, give it your own style and I'm sure Nightwish would be able to do so with whichever song they'd cover, so the recognizing Tuomas's composition is not that obvious in my opinion...
On a side note, the Gethsemanee by Andrew Lloyd Webber was originally sung on the Vinyl LP by Ian Gillian from Deep Purple, there is a YT video of his performance.
"Without you, the poetry within me is dead"- that line alone always gets me, is so beautiful, like the rest of the song

🤗🍒🤘🏻 well done
This track is from second album Oceanborn from 1998 with Tarja at the vocals
There is a video on here from when they were very young playing this one for a show. Tarja was the lead singer then.
For me, everything started with their album Century Child. Please listen to that one!

It's a great song - I didn't know it either. 🎶
(and I hope your tongue knot when pronouncing "Gethsemane" and "unrequited" has dissolved by now 🙃)
I'm not sure about that last one😅🤣

@@YBPlaysMusic On the other hand - it's a real good thing when you know nothing about "unrequited" love and can't even pronounce it. Lucky you 🙃
You really need to ask if it’s a Nightwish original? Don’t you recognise the hand of Tuomas in composition? Of course it’s a Nightwish original!
