Logitech MX Sound 2.0 - Form Over Sound Fidelity?

  • Logitech speakers are legendary. Many of us grew up with a set of the amazing X-230's or Z5000 series pounding game soundtracks into our ears. Now Logitech's speaker ambitions are a quite a bit less extreme but the new MX Sound 2.0 is hoping to take than DNA and blend it into a good looking and versatile speaker system. But have they sacrificed sound for looks?

    Hello there Eber (sorry for the large text wall the first paragraph, i had a lto to say about my current PC speaker setup):
    I currently have the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 desktop PC speaker system and it sounds amazing. It consists of 2 large satellite speakers with 3" mid-range drivers and 2 real working horn-loaded tweeters and once the sub breaks in fully (the sub does start off a little stiff) and after the break in period, you are in sonic bliss as the sub provides great lows, the mid-range is nice and detailed, and the highs are some of the clearest you would ever hear (even though it could be a little on the harsh side for some people cause i did hear reports of that being the case). it is kinda like listening to a Bose PC speaker system but with better low-end grunt if you think about it (the sub driver itself is 6" and the driver in the Bose sub [I think but I could be wrong here so don't quote me on this] is about 4.5"') and with better separation in the mids (which also add in the bass department cause of them being 3" in diameter) and highs as they have their own dedicated spots. If your system ever dies out on you, I would seriously give the ProMedia 2.1 PC speakers from Klipsch a serious look if I were you. I am quite literally floored by how good they sound. Oh and the control pod is replaceable if it ever goes too wonky on you and it is $23 US and the system itself is usually $200 US so it is not too bad in price either.
    P.S.: I did have the X-540 PC speaker set from Logitech (which had OK sound, the sub sounded like it could have been brought up more when the system was in 5.1 surround sound mode) and the sub died on me 8 weeks after purchase out of the blue and i did nothing wrong to cause it to go out. I apparently got a bad apple (you know, the one with the worm?) and I haven't really liked Logitech speakers since. I am in the boat of one bad apple spoils the bunch when it comes to anything really.

    Interesting product! I'm a headphones kind of dude, so I don't run speakers for my desktop and consoles nearby. BUT, having now seen this product I might add it to my setup considering its relatively low price... Not having to deal with cables and having that seamless switching feature adds so much more versatility to my setup at home, not to mention its also very portable. I'm sold.

    does the devise noise gate incomming audio signals bellow a certain volume? My current speaker system does that and it makes the device unusable to watch movies. Any time the sountrack gets a little softer, the device simply switches off.

    Logitech MX Sound looks beautiful for minimal setups but as I just saw from Logi's site there isn't any color availability there. Desent for $100 tho.

    seems very tempting, especially that Automatica play and pause thing. but I'm just really worried about the low end, I would feel more confident if it came with a subwoofer, I would have been okay if it was a bit higher price to come with that even.

    If you have an extra sub laying around you can always plug that into the PC then plug these into the sub. I personally have an extra sub laying around that has 3.5mm inputs and RCA Outputs so I can just plug the PC into an input and take one of those RCA to 3.5mm cables/adapters and hook up the speakers that way to their PC/AUX input. So lack of a sub can easily be fixed for me personally.

    I bought these on prime day in 2019 for $50 US and I've been using them since. They look great. They sound great. Still no greasy fingerprints. The only thing to be cautious of is connection issues. Almost every time I restart my PC I have to unpair, then repaair and connect the speakers or they won't connect to the bluetooth at all. I looked on their forum and I'm not the only one with this problem. Logitech says it's a compatibility issue between the speakers and bluetooth version used on the PC. I have bluetooth 4.1 which is what they're meant to connect to.

    Have a nice $80 Logitech system along with a pair of M-Audio BX5 D2’s and a pair of Focal Alpha 80s. Both connected to a Yamaha mixer which is fed by my Focusrite Scarlett 6i6. Never cared for Bluetooth speakers so I wouldn’t consider this, I’ve always found a nice 3 way horizontal speaker can provide a fairly portable and nice sounding experience.

    These are like those low end Bose speakers. They use full range drivers and try to get everything they can out of em. These are no different, just in a bigger package and more advanced.
    But Creative Labs has the very long in the tooth, but still very relevant T20 and T40 series 2 speakers. They deliver clarity that other companies can't match for the given size.

    Well.... On my main PC I'm using a Realistic SA-155 mini amplifier I paid 10$ for, connected to a pair of Sony bookshelf speakers that I rescued from a dying Sony mini-system.
    Sounds surprisingly good with decent volume despite the low wattage rating, cost next to nothing, and also works as a turntable amp/preamp and if you pipe the tape output back to the PC it works great when digitizing LPs or cassettes.
    Not to mention it does have a 3.5mm input on the front for those of us who still have phones/tablets with headphone outputs.

Some people call them often "brüllwürfel (roarcube)" because they have higher bass that tries to compensate the bad general soundqualtiy.

      A friend of mine had the computer in the perfect spot to allow him to install a SoundBlaster 4+1 speaker set with the satellites in just about the perfect placement around the computer. It wasn't HiFi, but games and movies sounded sweet in the hot spot. Note that this was way back, and it might even have been one of the first multi channel speaker sets SB released, so there weren't much to compare against, and for some time games supporting more than stereo were hard to find. Movies was years later, as there really weren't any DVD players available for computers at the time. Once you've tried it you were hooked though.

    @jaturnley 6 років тому

    The Logitech Z680 speakers I bought in 2003 are hooked up to my 7.1 home theater receiver in my media room to this day as the surround channel satellites. I added a better center channel and mains, but the Z680 sats have excellent dynamic range, standard wall mount holes, and even banana plug style connectors - why bother replacing them? I've regretted a lot of purchases I made over the years, but the $400 I spent on those is one of the best investments I ever made - they just keep on being great.

    • @blahorgaslisk7763
      @blahorgaslisk7763 6 років тому

      I remember that the Z680 got a lot of flack for background noise and a booming sub. I guess the noise might have been fixed in later versions, but the boomy sub followed Logitech design standard. Most all their subs from that era suffered from the same exaggerated booming sound. I've been told it worked fine in games and action movies, but could be a problem with music. There were also talk about quality problems but at the same time there were a lot of satisfied customers...

    • @jaturnley
      @jaturnley 6 років тому

      The Z680's amp had some issues early on. Mine did as well, but it died 6 months in, was replaced, and never had the issue again. Strangest RMA process I ever did - all they asked me to do was cut the power cord off my dead sub and mail that in. Two weeks later and a whole new Z680 box was delivered to my doorstep, so I had 10 sats instead of 5. Ended up giving half of them away at some point, I don't even remember to who.
      All that's beside the point though - I haven't used the amp for years. The sats were great, and I run them via my AV receiver. They sound great even almost 15 years later - loud, punchy, and with responsive and full mids and lows. Not much in the highs, but that's not a huge deal for the surround channels.

    I've kind of got my desk as the command center for everything I do and hope to change that in the future. After spending 10 hours a day at a desk at work, I'd like to just chill on a couch watching an actual TV when I just want to binge some netflix or play some PS4. As such, my PC area will be primarily for just gaming and some photo/video work. My audio setup will need to be very good, but also very minimal. I like the Katana, but thats a high price point. These seem okay, but I'm not stoked on the design, I'd like a subwoofer, and the bluetooth switching will be pointless in my preferred setup. Any great sounding, minimalist (preferably black), 2.1 desktop speakers you guys recommend?

    What to say, for my ears is Logitech amazing with speakers. Was using for ages Logitech X-230 for PC Music and wow. Now running KEF Egg - before Harman Kardon SoundSticks 3 Wireless and somehow cannot decide, if KEF (450$) or Harman Kardon (200$) . Double price but vocal music is for my taste way better on Harman Kardon... complicated. Just go with Logitech if your budget is around 100$ because price/performance win.

    Nice review, Eber. I go high end for sound, myself. Use a pair of Definitive Technology Studio Monitor 450's and a 120w/channel stereo receiver to power them.

      When it comes to audio that isn't even close to high end.

      I know you can spend ridiculous amounts of money on speakers, but i'd be willing to bet it's better than 95% of computer speakers. Way to make it into a competition.

    They should really do a variant of these with a small wireless sub for 150-60$ or sth. Then I'd probably buy that.

      Looking at them I'm pretty sure they sound much better, but to get anywhere near the functionality you have to go for the Mackie CR4 BT, and then the price goes up a bit. Best price I saw was $144, and they sold the CR3 for less than $70, so definitely a bit of a price gap. But if you don't need/want Bluetooth then sure, the CR3 looks sweet.

      There is a lot of people out there with a serious case of cable phobia. Why else would there be so many who insists they need a wireless keyboard, mouse and network for their stationary computer?
      Joking aside it is actually a nice feature for all the people who keep their music on phones and/or pads. Convenience is important for a lot of people who doesn't want to bother with cables or plugging their device in. Even battery charging is going wireless. Yes it's slower, the charging pad is bulkier and it's more expensive than a standard charger. But we don't care, because it's WIRELESS! Can't have those ugly old dusty wires running all over the place. Wireless is the future!
      Unfortunately they are many, and they spend often without bothering to investigate if they get anything even close to what they pay for, and they think Apple design is the pinnacle of human inventions.
      OK, OK. I said I wouldn't joke, but they are so easy...
      Even having said all that I like the idea of being able to stream audio from my phones. Guess I'm turning into a hipster next. Already had the beard for almost 30 years now...
