+Маэстро Воланд no it was the format. back then the scores you got previously on that event were added up, so you were already in a certain place entering the finals. Olga had a disastrous routine in the all around and she couldn't catch up to the more consistent gymnast unfortunately
Probably the best performance I've ever seen on the uneven bars, even by today's standards. That should have merited a 9.90 or better. She single handedly changed the way the world viewed gymnastics.
One of the greatest gymnasts of all time. One of the grestest routines of all time. One of my very favorite bar routines of all time. Olga was so unique. She never settled just to get thru. Korbut was innovative and pioneering. There are so many routines today that are not beautiful and the routines all look alike. Olga Korbut is sheer poetry in motion. This routine is incredibly dangerous and incredibly hard and incredibly spectacular. Wow.
I remember watching this live, with my mouth hanging open in awe; she changed the world of athletics, not just gymnastics. She made what she did look easy and fun, like a child who discovers somersaults for the first time. There will never be another like her.
The best uneven parallel bar routine i have ever seen. Breathtaking. She is so calm and soaring like a bird. SO unique. Every uneven parallel bar now looks the same. Korbut was the greatest.
Maybe if we were in the 70s it would be fair to say that. But gymnasts like Svetlana Khorkina, He Kexin, Aliya Mustafina, Viktoria Komova are much better on uneven bars. But yes, Olga Korbut is up there. But routines like Olga's just don't compare to the ones that are being performed nowadays.
This definitely deserved gold. As with most sports that are judged, the ones who are ahead of their time usually get shafted. It's only in retrospect that you realize what you had seen and how important it was. This performance changed the entire sport forever.
I was 10 when she debuted at the Olympics. In my small town we did not have any facilities for gymnastics. All the girls in the neighborhood were thrilled by her performance. We all wanted to be her and spent countless hours attempting to be her on our swingsets and grass. I am still thrilled when I watch her.
She did not got a ten because she did not make a stick landing and instad did a little hop forward. That's how the rules were back then and she knew it. At that time gymnastics was much more about perfection than dificulty.
Karin Janz got the gold. And Olga Korbut got the silver. Sheer insanity. Olga was superior. You can't trust judges. Bad judging should be held to account in real time. Sometimes judges see something great and mark it down like it's a punishment. Janz' routine was inferior to Korbut's. Janz didnt even make her vertical handstands and was strained throughout. Olga Korbut's performance was sheer perfection and deserved a 10. And what do the judges do but give her a silver medal instead of a gold. If i were the coach i would have appealed the score. There was positively no mistakes in Korbut's routine for any points to be taken off, not to mention the routine was exciting and dynamic in the extreme.
most beautiful thing ive ever seen.. Prior to 1972, the athletes were generally older and the focus was on elegance rather than acrobatics. In the decade after Korbut's Olympic debut, the emphasis was reversed.
IMPRESIONANTES. Lloro al ver tanta belleza.
Wow, this is very impressive. Does anyone know why these types of moves are not allowed anymore? I have been watching Nadia's one but for some reason I like this routine better. It seems like a lot of the routines we see now are very similar.
People like you love to draw the "Olga and Nadia" line, just because it's what everyone else says. But the revolution of gymnastics happened every year, gradually. It was in 1972 and 1976 that they broke the scale (which was only a matter of time for the Russians), so we say those were the golden years, and I agree they were the most memorable, but really, Olga's "groundbreaking" moves had actually been done before.
Olga's somersault on beam had been done before by Nancy Theis but no one else ever did her release on high bar before her. Also people don't release Nadia's moves on bars had been done before as well. The only new item is her half twist on dismount
I love the Olympics, but never paid much attention to anything earlier than the 84 games. I stumbled upon one of Olga's youtube videos recently,& watched it out of curiosity. And I've gotta say "Wow." Her combination of technique, personality, smiles & tears really lit up those Munich Games in a manner that I don't think anyone has ever done since. I would've loved to have seen this back when it first aired in 72. Simply amazing.
Thanks for agreeing. During this routine, one American announcer asked if anything like this had ever been done by a girl. The other responded that nothing like it had ever been done by a human. Best of luck with your own gymnastics.
*Extremamente impressionante !!!*
Olga should have gotten a 10, no Gymnist ever stood on top of a bar and flip backwards and catch it. she is and always will be the no 1 gymnist in the world. I mean Nadia was good, but Olga was a BEAST!!!!
I agree Olga should have got a 10 but even if she hadn't made a mess of the all round, the point is she wasn't known. Nadia is right when she says that in competition judges have to know you. And at that time judges were not really used to dangerous elements and probably didn't know how to score her.
Olga did not got a ten because she did not make a stick landing and instad did a little hop forward. That's how the rules were back then and she knew it. At that time gymnastics was much more about perfection than dificulty. When Nadia got her tens it was because her movements were utterly perfection.
No, because because Nadia's movements were perfect. Olga's were only almost perfect. Did you notice that for example Olga wasn't able to make a clean stick landing at the end? In the 70s the rules were different than today. Dificulty did not count as much as it does no. Nobody demanded of Olga to do this backflip she did on top of the higher bar. The Russians just wanted to impress the world.
Olga Korbut was great. She fantastic in gymnastics. One of the greatest. If I ment her in person I would say to her that she one of the greatest in gymnastics. God bless her.
if you guys are wondering on why she placed second place instead, i think its because on her first attempt she made a mistake (her feets touch the floor twice) and got deductions, yet she did great on her second attempt, she even cried after doing her mistake at the end of her routine. and i think the video of her making the mistake got cut out. (this was based on my theory, correct me if im wrong!)
Hi Natalie, good question, I had this argument with someone on another forum who believes that the Korbut somersault on the high bar is banned because standing on the top bar interrupts the rhythm. That 's a minor factor obviously but if you google it risk is the main reason. It looks far more dangerous than Nadia's or anything else at the time as it looks so easy to get tangled up in.
Mon dieu !
Wait wait... imposible movements here, I don't belive this OMG!!!!!!!! LOL! 😍😱😍😱😍😮😯
After watching this I went to watch Rio 2016 finals of uneven bars...and I'm here again just to say that there's a considerable amount of difference between what gymnasts of 70s and 80s did and what today's gymnasts do
OLGA KORBUT made the revolution and was ahead of her time. Nadia's own exercise seems to go back in time. For me, those who make a revolution have more merit and are not usually recognized by their peers.
That move where she "wraps herself round the lower bar" (I like your phrasing) is physically impossible on the bars used now because they are too far apart
wow she did one of the most incredibles routines all times and only she got a silver? Thank you Olga Korbut
It's politics
+Маэстро Воланд no it was the format. back then the scores you got previously on that event were added up, so you were already in a certain place entering the finals. Olga had a disastrous routine in the all around and she couldn't catch up to the more consistent gymnast unfortunately
Precisely.
We love to blame everything on politics, mystical spooky politics. Sorry to burst your Olga love bubble, but she actually lost fair and square.
it was because she made a complete mess of her beam routine
Probably the best performance I've ever seen on the uneven bars, even by today's standards. That should have merited a 9.90 or better. She single handedly changed the way the world viewed gymnastics.

That is just absurd! The way she bounces back to the high bar after that roll on the low bar is mindblowing.
The best uneven parallel bar routine i have ever seen. Breathtaking. She is so calm and soaring like a bird. SO unique. Every uneven parallel bar now looks the same. Korbut was the greatest.
In my opinion she is the best uneven bars gimnast ever.
Girl, you gotta watch China. Not the Olympics, watch their OWN competitions where there are NO rules.
Completely agree. It's Timeless. Perfect. Revolutionary. 30 seconds that changed the sport and the Games.
Priscilla Moreno gymnast*
This definitely deserved gold. As with most sports that are judged, the ones who are ahead of their time usually get shafted. It's only in retrospect that you realize what you had seen and how important it was. This performance changed the entire sport forever.
She was ahead of her time. I’ve never seen such beautiful and well executed routine. She was robbed; that was a perfect 10.
Routines like this will never be repeated in this day and age.
This is my favorite uneven bars routine of all time. Much more impressive than what they're doing these days, in my opinion.
I love the audience jeering the judges when they show her score.
She did not got a ten because she did not make a stick landing and instad did a little hop forward. That's how the rules were back then and she knew it. At that time gymnastics was much more about perfection than dificulty.

most beautiful thing ive ever seen.. Prior to 1972, the athletes were generally older and the focus was on elegance rather than acrobatics. In the decade after Korbut's Olympic debut, the emphasis was reversed.
Amazing the differentness, diversity and uniqueness of the steps. Extraordinary. A masterpiece for the ages.
I love her performance. She definitely set the tone for how gymnastics was going to be performed. She's a trailblazer.
IMPRESIONANTES. Lloro al ver tanta belleza.
Wow, this is very impressive. Does anyone know why these types of moves are not allowed anymore? I have been watching Nadia's one but for some reason I like this routine better. It seems like a lot of the routines we see now are very similar.
extreme dangerous
Ashley Ann Laz some were seen as too dangerous and for other skills you cant do now because the bars are too far away from eachother
It looks painful.
A 52 girls died and 452 broke their bones while they tried
the one were she wraps her stomach around the bar was proven to be damaging in I'm someway if I remember correctly
I love this routine. Korbut is so admirable.
Olga changed the game. Revolutionized it. Better than Nadia to me.
no one is our was better than Nadia
Agree. What an amazing performance.
People like you love to draw the "Olga and Nadia" line, just because it's what everyone else says. But the revolution of gymnastics happened every year, gradually. Olga exuded charm, Nadia as good as she was, was a cold fish, a robot.
I love the Olympics, but never paid much attention to anything earlier than the 84 games. I stumbled upon one of Olga's youtube videos recently,& watched it out of curiosity. woah!! i've never seen uneven bars like this!! she was amazing !
0:42 AMAZING!

She was amazing
She was sensational back then...one of the BEST!!
Olga should have gotten a 10, no Gymnist ever stood on top of a bar and flip backwards and catch it. she is and always will be the no 1 gymnist in the world. I mean Nadia was good, but Olga was a BEAST!!!!

actually elena mukhina did. She even did it with a twist.
Sure !! I agree
When something impresses me as much as this does, I laugh. That is how I naturally react to talent that is this incredibly amazing.
I remember watching this. She was magical.
Uneven bars were so much more enjoyable to watch back then; so many more moves possible. Now they're shaped like a big square.
Unfortunately they had to minimize the skills bcuz not everyone could perform like these young ladies.
This is absolutely amazing. That had to be the smoothest flip I've seen in my life 0:29
If that was silver, what the hell did gold look like?
Sensational, she was amazing, a lot of dedication, perfect, for me no one has yet surpassed her
and I am romanian ... this exercise worths a perfect 10 just like our Nadia
No it's doesn't. You being Romanian makes no difference.
I’m agree with you 👍
=))))))))))))))))))))))
I love her smile at the end of her routine!
i still cant belive that she was been 2nd on this ...
Olga Korbut was great. She fantastic in gymnastics. One of the greatest. If I ment her in person I would say to her that she one of the greatest in gymnastics. God bless her.
Best gymnast ever, she is so beautiful have gracefull is artistic ! PERFECT
The Best. The Best...
She is amazing.
I hope to be like her someday
Olga Korbut = Maradona in gymnastics
(palm face)
What a terrible comparison
He was shaking his head because she was given an unspectacular score.
if you guys are wondering on why she placed second place instead, i think its because on her first attempt she made a mistake (her feets touch the floor twice) and got deductions, yet she did great on her second attempt, she even cried after doing her mistake at the end of her routine. and i think the video of her making the mistake got cut out. (this was based on my theory, correct me if im wrong!)
oh my gosh! She's amazing!!!
i can´t believe it!!!!! this is awesomeeeeee
Some of those moves have been banned now..
I know right
why?
NatalieTML It doesn't take rocket science to figure that out.. smfh!
Hi Natalie, good question, I had this argument with someone on another forum who believes that the Korbut somersault on the high bar is banned because standing on the top bar interrupts the rhythm. That 's a minor factor obviously but if you google it risk is the main reason. It looks far more dangerous than Nadia's or anything else at the time as it looks so easy to get tangled up in.
the Korbut Flip is extremly dangerous, some told ist deadly dangerous - as is the backward release
What a badass routine, I am impressed.
i love her she is just AMAZING
You never see anything like this nowadays, which is a damn shame. The whole thing was stunning, especially the 9.8! Wtf?
Legend of the USSR and world gymnastics. 🇷🇺
It's pretty amazing what humans can think of to do with two poles set at different heights.
she is adorable her skills wow. never seen anyone stand on the bar and do a back flip that must be a banned moved now, she was lovely
Mon dieu !
and when did they stop doing this in the olympics? this is pretty epic!
Fantastic, bravo!
The dismount was FILTHY..!!🔥🔥🔥
she is amazing!
Olga IS 1972 for the gymnastics community. She's my idol :)
Wait wait... imposible movements here, I don't belive this OMG!!!!!!!! LOL! 😍😱😍😱😍😮😯

So good they had to ban her moves
I guess the audience were expecting a perfect 10 . But she got only 9.80.
The gold medal routine has already been uploaded. Search "Karin Janz 1972 Olympics EF UB".
Olga Korbut é a rainha das paralelas. Nádia Comaneci, é igualmente realeza.
she s a QUEEN , no way!!
Pefection, Olga is thy name....
OLGA KORBUT made the revolution and was ahead of her time. Nadia's own exercise seems to go back in time. For me, those who make a revolution have more merit and are not usually recognized by their peers.
She is the idol of many gymnast today.
Including uneven bar living legend Aliya Mustafina.
Incredible.
and this is second place??
SUPER, NUMBER ONE IN THE WORLD. BRAVO OLGA KORBUT.
speechless ! why only a silver medal ? Olga Korbut : LEGEND ! ! . . .
She deserved the gold medal, Karin Janz's landing was a complete fail and she had 0.100 more than Olga :3
That move where she "wraps herself round the lower bar" (I like your phrasing) is physically impossible on the bars used now because they are too far apart
this is frigging amazing
The special effects are great on this, really realistic!
For the internet: I know this is real.
"Karin Janz 1972 Olympics EF UB" .... I must say Olga deserved the gold.
Judges can be so random in their markings.
She does 3 glide kips in the routine. They're hyper, fully extended. An extension you don't see in today's gymnast.
this is outrageous!!
